Summary: I am glad to own it, but I am not taking it to the Prom.
Review: As they would say on American Bandstand, I would give this title a 65 - the lyrics are ok but its easy to dance to. I do A LOT of pdf crap (and i hate pdf) both converting too and from. For some conversions (NOT COMPLEX GRAPHICS) it works well, for others it is so-so.
It does do a BETTER job, converting from pdf - at least on the long, complex-formated text documents - which are my primary beast of burden, than Adobe PRO 6.0. Howver Scansoft has some quirk's that potential buyers need to be aware of -
1. It messes up haeaders and footers - it captures them just fine but puts them in funky places as a table and of couse screws up the page numbering,,,
2. On occasion (and this is the frustrating part) it converts text into graphics,,,
3. It handles check boxes and the other vbs features of WORD poorly, often creating them as graphics
4. It routeinely messes up autonumbering, again often picking up a number and making it a graphic
However, having said all that - it is quicker/faster/better than Adobe Pro 6.0. for Word conversions. Sometimes its a dozen hand fixes per page, other times one or two, but i will gladly trade that for rekeying or scanning.
For the record, I have an old version of Omni-Pro and DID NOT try to use its features as suggested.
I am glad I own it but I dont think I am taking it to the prom.

Summary: Great software!
Review: For a change, an easy to use software that does EXACTLY what I need it to do. Further, it does it almost instantaneously. What a software! What a price!

Summary: For the price, MS Word should already have this feature
Review: For the price you pay for MS products, Word should already have this capability built into its feature set. And since PDF creation is now an open standard there's no excuse for not having this feature in MS' over-priced Word processor.

I recommend the Openoffice.org office suite. The latest version--1.1--allows you to export your files directly into PDF and is freely available from www.openoffice.org.

And while Openoffice does not allow you to open and work on a PDF file, why should you have to? If you need to work on a file get it before it is formatted into a PDF. The ability to create a PDF file is vastly superior to being able to convert a PDF back into an editable file format. And you shouldn't have to. The whole idea is to edit the source BEFORE it is formatted as a PDF!

Don't waste your money or your time with this MS Word add-on. Get Openoffice.org's office suite and get PDF creation for FREE.

Cheers!

Summary: PDF Converter with Potential
Review: Having used this product on large (more than 500 pages) and complex documents, my conclusion is that this could be a very good product. Unfortunately, the software has some logic flaws that cause it to fail repeatedly on specfic text formatting. For example, consider the following listing:
a. Data Element
b. Data Element Tag
c. Element Number
d. Group Number
The application always fails on this and similar listings by randomly deleting the new paragraph marker and setting the right margin incorrectly. Too bad that Scansoft support, which could alert developers to this type of problem, is the worst I have ever encountered. Perhaps someone from Scansoft will read this review and fix this problem and other problems encountered by customers.

Summary: Pass this product by
Review: I am a computer technician from Northern California. I recently serviced a computer that crashed. I installed the product on the replacement computer. The activation failed because the product was activated once before (3 weeks ago on the crashed computer). I called, long distance, to their customer support. I was asked provide proof of purchase and provide a copy of the purchase order. This was to be sent via a reply to an email the rep was to send me. No email was sent. You are given one phone call per serial number otherwise the cost is 19.99 for phone or 9.99 for email. This product at the time of purchase was aprox. $36.00. The product itself only worked half the time. I would not buy this product if it cost $.99. I may never recommend a Scan Soft product again to anyone. The product and service was exceptionally pathetic.

Summary: Stumbles on Complex Documents
Review: I downloaded this software to convert a two-page PDF document into an editable Word 2000 document. Much of the text converted well but the more complex areas of my PDF file, those that were contained inside of tables, were poorly done. Portions of it were rendered as images(!), while other parts came through properly as text inside of tables. However, much of that text was inside of frames, or even nested frames. Frames are Word objects that are tricky at best, and frustratingly hard to deal with at worst. Removing a frame often removes its contained text as well. Either way, editing the converted document so as to make it look like the original was very difficult. In the case of the portions that converted to images, it was impossible.
The product installs/uninstalls easily and seems to run well. If you're converting simple PDF files, this product may do the job but for complex documents, especially ones containing tables, I would not recommend it.

Summary: Great product to help save time
Review: I have been using this product for a few weeks and it works great for me. When you consider what it does, the results are pretty amazing - it reconstructs a document with formatting from a picture! It does not work perfectly on every single document, but usually any clean up is minimal. I am very happy with it. For $50 it has saved me hundreds by not having to retype stuff from PDFs. I noticed someone made a comment about it not working on encrypted files - it says that one the box and on the web site. The stupidity of people never fails to amaze me!

Summary: Better Than Expected
Review: I just purchased my PDF Converter for using on Microsoft Word. I have converted all of my legal texts in about 1 hour. This represents several hundred pages of documentation. Have reviewed for mistakes but could not find any. This works better than anticipated and will save thousands of dollars in man hours. Wish this would have been released sooner.
