Summary: I am very pleased so far...
Review: I just recieved mine the other day and immediately made some CD's. I can't tell you how cool it was to be able to put Disturbed, Staind, STP, Bush, Puddle of Mud, Linkin Park, A Perfect Circle, Cold, and Papa Roach all on to one disc. MP3 Rocks!! I don't use it for jogging, but I live in Iceland right now and I walk to work everyday and I've had no problems. I haven't had it skip once yet so I'm not about to try that flash upgrade that some of these other reviews have mentioned. It's not the most rugged player I've seen, but I'll be using it for plane trips, walks, and at the office. I [stinks] that it doesn't come with an AC adapter, but so far the battery life has been great. I'll just buy one seperately. And HOLY COW... for the price you can't beat it!!!!

Review: I've been looking at mp3 players for quite some time before finally buying this one, and I have to say, I'm very happy with the product, especially considering the price. I followed the directions for the upgrade, and it wasn't too difficult. I had to shake it around pretty vigorously to get it to skip with a standard CD playing, and couldn't get it to skip at all with an MP3 CD. If you're not experienced at coding, it helps to read the review from "muchas gracias" and I was able to find a free hex editor online by just entering that as the subject in my search engine. It is true that the headphones that come with the unit are not that great, and it would be nice to have an FM tuner, but I really don't think you can beat this one for the price. All in all, it's a good performer.

Review: I have owned this for over 4 months now. It is great. You can have a CD-RW full of stuff (mp3 and not) and it will play the MP3's.
The only problem I have had with it is that it is SO NOT 120sec skip free, but as long as you don't go jogging with it is fine.
It also takes some time to read, but with the upgrade it takes considerable shorter amounts of time.
I followed the steps described in other reviews and was able to upgrade firmware it to version 2.1 VERY EASY.Just check out geocities/sp90hack for detailed instructions Buy this product and upgrade it, why bother spending more money?

Summary: Pretty darn cool gadget
Review: I've used the SP90 on a couple of out-of-town trips, and I'd also used this unit as the "poor man's CD changer" in an insurance rental that I drove for three months. Out of the box, the SP90 has a number of good things going for it - it's relatively inexpensive, has better sound quality than similar MP3-CD players in its price range, and its folder-based navigation scheme and ID tag support makes managing 10+ hours' worth of music relatively easy. It handles CBR and VBR mp3's well, although audio cd's have a tendency to skip and jitter, and I'll never be bothered to rip any of my music collection to .wma. That said, this unit is meant for mp3's, and for that purpose it works reasonably well. The minuses of the SP90 include - long load times for discs, especially if you're dealing with CD-RW's, long gaps between tracks (particularly annoying if you've got this connected to a car tape deck, as the car stereo will go on auto-seek between almost every song). Particularly vigorous shaking will make this unit jitter and skip, so it's not recommended that you go snowboarding with the SP90 (although the elliptical trainer at the gym is fine). That said, there is a totally unsupported firmware upgrade (translation: try this at your own risk!) that will allow you to update the SP90 to the latest SP100 firmware. Don't ask why it works, but it does. I've been using the 2.10 revision of the SP100 firmware on my SP90 for the last few days, and I'm amazed to report that load time, in-between track gap, skipping, and other issues have been resolved. It's like I've got a brand new MP3-CD player!

Summary: Unable to upgrade to 2.10 / Unit skips constantly
Review: I followed the steps listed on this site to upgrade to firmware 2.10 and I can not seem to do it. I upgrade the default firmward (1.00) to 2.01 and then realized there was a newer version available. I followed the same steps and the player just tells me that there is "no disc" in it. As far as the overall performance of the device, I am not pleased. It skips constantly and I can't seem to get 120 ESP. I have the ability to switch between 30s or 60s for MP3's and 10s or 40s for audio CD's. Where is the 120s ESP listed on the site?

Summary: Almost a SP100, great value
Review: Great value! I had a SP100 that I dropped at the gym... So time to replace it. Well, hack the firmware... and I added my SP100 remote. Works like a charm, just no backlight! Not great shock protection, I use a Rio500 for jogging.

Review: I travel by airplane nearly everyday of the week. I found myself tired of changing CD's frequently. The thought of 150 - 200 songs on one CD was very appealing. I looked around for some time before deciding on this unit. I use it with Bose QuietComfort™ AcousticNoise Cancelling® Headset. This is an excellent combination and the RioVolt is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a CD/MP3 player.

Review: This player is great I did not do the update because i didn't need it. it only skips under hard shaking even then it has 120 sec ESP protection. it plays all of my mp3s perfectly.I Walk around with it in my hand alot for two days now and no skipping.
I haven't tried it with audio cds though. i am not sure about that. With MP3 cds this thing is great. The price is also great.

Summary: A Great Product!
Review: After a lot of research I decided on this product over several others available in local stores. Anyway, I really don't understand some of the comments here about the unit skipping, gaps between tracks, etc. I'm using it as I write this, playing an mp3 CD that I burned on a Macintosh computer. (Hey, maybe those complainers should try things the EASY way and buy a Mac!) I'm holding it in my free hand and shaking it, probably a little more roughly than it would be shaken if I went on a brisk walk. No skipping at all. There is a gap of about 3 or 4 seconds between tracks, just as you'd have with an ordinary music CD. It seems to be a sturdy product, with easy-to-understand navigation and buttons. Battery life is great (and for those who complain, might I suggest stepping into this century and investing in rechargeable batteries? Short battery life or not, they're MUCH cheaper in the long run!) The unit is lightweight and an attractive shade of blue, although I think I'd have preferred it to be black. It takes only a little time and intelligence to learn the locations of the buttons so you can use the machine without looking (like in a car). Also, the buttons are fairly flat, which in my mind makes them less likely to be damaged during rough use. Finally, the sound is really great, and the in-ear phones provided are among the best I've gotten with any CD player. They're comfortable and provide listening privacy. (Hello, teenagers and college students! Why do you use traditional headphones but then turn up your music so loud that everyone around you has to suffer through listening to it, when you could use in-ear phones instead?!) So, if you're just looking for a good unit that plays CDs and mp3s, try this one out. It's got some great features!
