Summary: Neat, but disappointing
Review: After putting this item on my wish list a few weeks ago, I bought it at a retail outlet last weekend as an impulse buy, for the same price as on .... It's an amazing 16 mm thin, plays CD, CD-R and CD-RW disks encoded with audio, mp3 and WMA files. It has a built in FM radio and comes with a corded remote which gives you access to all the yummy features.

What are my complaints? Well, it skips unacceptably after being left in the glove box in summertime heat, even when the temp is in the 80's. That's my major complaint. It doesn't skip in mp3 mode outside the car, at least when compared to my plain old Sony CD player. I've had it in a fanny pack on a garden tractor while mowing a bumpy field, and there wasn't a single stutter. But since I got it with the car in mind, and it's Summer, the heat or vibration sensitivity ( since that's what it seems to be ) is a big problem.

Also, it uses rechargeable batteries, and to use regular ones, since the unit is so thin, a little attachment barrel for two "AA" bats is required. While this attachment is included with the player, it makes the whole contraption rather unwieldy. Additionally, the corded remote is the only display the player has, and is quite a flimsy piece of plastic. This evening, three days later, I returned it to the retailer, and plan to get a Rio Volt SP250 in its stead. It is a very neat gadget, but unfortunately, it failed to meet my needs.

Summary: This is the player to buy
Review: Prior to purchasing the IRiver I bought Memorex and Riovolt MP3 players and I ended up taking them both back because they either lacked features, had poor sound quality, or skipped too much. The IRiver has excellent sound quality, skip protection, and a great remote with backlight. I especially like the WMA support. Burn ~ twice as many songs in WMA format at 64Kbs bitrate and the sound quality is just as good as MP3 at 128Kbs bitrate. I'm not easy to please but this player does just that.

Summary: Overrated
Review: Many people, it seems, have raved so much about this CD player that you'd think the Mothership had landed. Folks, it's just a CD player, and a rather problematic one at that.

Here's my own set of pros and cons:

Pros:
*An actual metal lid
*Decent sound
*Long-life batteries
*Relatively affordable
*Thin and stylish
*You can program the splash screen with your own message
*Displays information in multiple languages
*Line out port (but no stereo connection cable supplied)

Cons:

*Plastic bottom
*Flimsy remote
*Difficult navigation via LCD, especially if you're nearsighted and have big fingers
*A manual that desperately needs a native English speaker's editorial guidance
*Earbuds that hurt the insides of my ears
*Firmware upgrade possible only with a Windows computer
*Not loud enough

A big deal has been made about this unit's ability to read homemade CDs. However, I've owned cheapo portable CD players that have handled them with no trouble--just less hype. I did play one homemade CD in the iRiver and was perplexed to find that it would stop after playing each track. I could never figure out why.

So, if you're a PC owner who wants a pretty good portable CD player with the ability to upgrade its firmware, go for it. Just don't expect it to save the world.

Summary: The Best CD-MP3 around!
Review: I recently replaced my plain jane 6 year old portable CD player with the Iriver SlimX. What a difference! This player has everything: CD-Audio player, 700 Mb MP3 player, FM radio. Anti-shock that won't quit. I went from about 30 seconds to 180 seconds on CD-Audios and now have 480 seconds on MP3s. Sizewise, it's thinner than anything on the market. It has a great remote that's very easy to use and navigate. It will even use a WinAmp playlist. The only thing lacking is decent carry case (I'll use the neoprene beltpack that came with my old player, even if it has Kenwood imprinted on it). A slight glitch is a short pause between tracks. This is only annoying if you play voice (like speaker tapes) CDs or MP3s. I kinda sounds like the speaker has a bit of gas. Overall, I highly recommended this player!

Summary: awesome little machine
Review: At first sight i saw this player and fell in love, i mean it lookls really cool, and it is so thin, i mean how do they do it! I think the remote was very cool, i was able to navigate through folders very easily, and it even plays winamp playlist, isn't that the coolest! the only problem i have now is finding enough songs to put on my CD-R. THe sound quality is very good, even with the included earphones the sound is very good, although when i do get more money i will probably invest in a better pair. the battery life is very good, and rechargeing is a snap just plug it in and pick it up in the morning, i don't htink i'll ever worry about using AA unless i go on an extended trip, even so teh battery life of 10 hours will last anyways, i recomend this player to anyone, i mean its great for you music buffs, people who like to listen to music while working out(the antiskip is amazing) or anyoneable to come up with the 150 bucks. All the extras put the icing on the cake, i mean its just an amazing package and i recomend this product to everyone, nice job iriver

Summary: MUSICIANS BEWARE!!!!!
Review: After reading the reviews I tried this one. It works as advertised with all the different formats, the problem is that when the radio is on the volume level is great but it drops signifigantly for cds. My 6 year old daughter has no tolerance for any loud volumes and she wanted it to go up louder when it was already maxed. As a musician I have done damage to my own hearing but this player is in no way one which I will be able to use. I gave it to a friend that likes to listen to her music low anyways. If you at all like to play your music LOUD then stay away from this one.

Summary: A excellent product - if used properly
Review: I decided to write this review to address some negative comments about the volume and quality of the sound output on the SlimX.

I have used my SlimX for some months, playing a variety of disks from audio CDs to CD-RWs containing mp3s ripped from CD and mp3s of greatly varying quality from the internet.

I have come to notice that, listening to downloaded mp3s, volume can sometimes vary significantly from one track to the next. I have never had this problem with commercial audio CDs

I think that the problems people have with volume may have more to do with the disks they're playing than the SlimX.

I suggest experimenting a bit with your CD burner software and getting advice from the company on how to optimise the quality of burnt disks.

Well worth the effort.

Summary: BEST. PLAYER. EVER.
Review: This player has everything I want in a player and more. Never skipped, sounds fantastic, has a remote control, even comes with a protective cover. Excellent player, superb design... I can't say enough good things about this mp3/cd player from Iriver.

Summary: This is the best MP3-CD Player.
Review: PRAISE: Let's face it, this puppy won BEST DIGITAL AUDIO PLAYER category in PC World 2002 World Class Awards. I was shocked when Slim-X beat Apple Ipod and Nomad jukebox, Goodjob Slim-X. Oh it was also Editor's top choice at CNET.com for over than 2 months. If you think I am lying why don't u go to Cnet.com right now and find out for yourself. It was even featured at CNN Headlines news now that's what I called a "Serious Machine." If you give this baby less than four stars then u got some some bad issues going on. BMW calles itself The Ultimate Driving Machine. Well guess what? Iriver SlimX IMP-350 is the Ultimate MP3-CD Player compared to all mp3-cds out there.

DOWNSIDE: Other than "painful earbuds" you've got to be kidding.

Summary: Superior to the Rio Volt SP250
Review: I recently purchased the SlimX after a strong debate between it and the Sonic Blue Rio Volt SP250. Both products were well made, and reliable, provide FM support, and are both very highly reviewed. In the end, the SlimX won my approval due to it's slim design (half the rio's thickness) as well as overall aesthetics, superior remote, great sound quality (Many EQ presets and although some reviewers complain about the high trebble, this can be adjusted to a rather quality sound, and i think the headseat and user preference play highly into an individuals satisfaction), multiple codec support, and firmware upgrading (the player evolves with the electronic music genre, able to support future file types). The playability is amazing and the functionality of the product is very satisfactory. And yes, most reviewers are correct in their pointing out the fact that the supplied earbuds don't do the player justice, but add some phones of your own, and enjoy. I'm extremely satisfied with iriver's product and you can bet i'll be looking forward to what they have to offer the consumer next. Overall, the Rio as well as the SlimX are great purchases, the styling for both companies is very similar, but Sonic Blue has yet to top the sleekness of the SlimX. The player does eat batteries like a beast, but i have yet to charge and discharge enough to "break them in" to their full capacity. Well worth the money.
