Summary: Simply reliable
Review: It's the best mp3cd player around. Solid, easy to use, reliable and even looks really neat. Plays every kind of cd's, can be used with or without the remote, and is elegant. I used to have the Rio Volt from these guys and I upgraded to this. I will stick to this brand. Reviews are the proof and speak for themselves.

Its simply the best and reliable. Buy now or regret later.

Summary: Couldn't be better
Review: When I finally bought a CD Burner, I thought a CD/MP3 player would be the perfect accesory. The best reviewed players were the sonicblue player and this nifty player. They both looked pretty good, except the IRiver SlimX player was thinner and ten dollars cheaper. I accidently dropped this thing twice and because of the metal shell, no scratches. On any setting I have yet to hear this thing skip. After many hours of listning, the battery meter hasn't gone down yet. Great music quality. Only thing that could be improved in the future is the loading time. Great player!

Summary: An Amazing CD/MP3 Player!
Review: I just bought an IRiver SlimX player, and it's totally amazing. The remote is so cool and convenient, except for the font size, but it has support for over 30 languages! The earphones produce good quality sound, but they hurt my ears, so I had to buy another pair. The carrying case, however, is just garbage. I wouldn't trust it to protect anything. On first use, the rechargeable batteries gave me around 10-12 hours which is pretty decent. I haven't tried the external power-pack yet.
At first, I did have a problem with all my MP3 CD's. For some reason, none of them would play. I had burned them at 32x speed, and the player would not recognize any of them. Then I tried burning them at 4X speed, and this time there were no problems at all. I don't know if it's a problem with my CD burner, or if the player only reads CD's that have been burned at a low write speed.
Another cool feature was the upgradeable firmware. I just downloaded the upgrade and burned it onto a CD. Again the player didn't recognize it because I had burned it at 32x. After burning the upgrade at 4x, the player upgraded itself in a couple of minutes. It added many new features, and also 3 new preset EQ settings (Dance, Pop, Metal), and the player actually automatically loads the appropriate EQ setting based on genre in the ID3 tag of each MP3 file. It's so cool!

It takes a whole to learn the operation of the remote, but once you figure it out, it's such a joy to use it! I'd really recommend this player to everyone!

Summary: Remote Display Never Worked
Review: It's hard to fully rate this item since it never worked from the day I received it . I could tell that the volume is inadequate, the earbuds are useless, the velvet-like draw-string pouch is useless and the manual is very confusing. Customer support is only available through email. I emailed a very good description of the problem indicating that nothing was visible on the display, no text, no numbers, absolutely nothing. Tech support sends back a reply saying that copy-protected CD's ID tags aren't supported on this model and won't show up on the display????? huh??? They never read the first email so I had to send a second one and wait again. I called the tech support number and it immediately goes to voice mail indicating to leave your name and number and someone will call you back. Guess what, over a week now and no one has called back. Very poor customer service.

I thought about ordering it from another vendor but it's just not worth the effort. Wait 6 months (maybe even 3) and something better and cheaper will be available

Summary: Great Mp3 CD Player
Review: This was an excellent buy except for the fact that the battery life of the rechargeable batteries is very poor. The batteries got exhausted in about 3 hours. Apart from that lil' problem, this is a definite must-buy. I just wish they give a better carry bag than that is given now. Its too flimsy. It is one of the slimmest players I have seen and does live upto its reputation.

Summary: Minor flaws
Review: The SlimX is everything it claims to be ... but it has some minor flaws that show up in actual use. One is that you can't just plug in the battery charger and expect it to charge the batteries. You have to plug it in, turn it on, then immediately turn it off, and choose the "charge" option. That's awkward. Another is that it reloads the ASP memory at the start of each song, so if you are doing something active, you can get skipping at the beginning of each song. It should just buffer ahead whatever is coming, regardless of song boundaries. Third, it's not really that sturdy. I've found I have to wear a belt-carrier with it close to my body otherwise very little bouncing causes the ASP memory to fail to load. And then, if I sit down, and the SlimX is at an odd angle, with a little pressure on the cover, it fails to properly spin up the CD and can't load the ASP memory. Very little pressure on the case can cause it to basically stop working when the ASP memory empties at the end of a song. (I know it's got an aluminum cover; I think the plastic twists.)

These are annoying things, but the upgradeability, the formats supported (including DirectCD), and the sound quality make it a good buy, if you treat it carefully. And be sure to condition the flat batteries by discharging/charging several times when you first get it, or battery life is diminished. And if you are traveling, be sure to take the extra battery pack with you, because my friend and I have both noticed that the flat batteries seem to drain (slowly) even when the SlimX is not in active use. (New note: I think my battery life is reduced when I choose "discharge/charge", which I thought would be a good thing to do. I stopped doing that, and my batteries are lasting much longer. So just condition the batteries a few times when you get it, and then do a standard charge. You might want to condition them again once a year, but doing it repeatedly doesn't seem to top them off properly.)

Summary: Remote dead on arrival - poor tech support
Review: I ordered this item from... at a very good price; however, the remote never worked from day one. I called tech support but no one ever answered - immediately went to voice mail. I left message but no one ever called back. I also sent an email to tech support that was answered but it was the typical email answer of checking basic things I had already checked. They didn't read my email and asked questions that I had already answered in the original email requiring me to send another email and wait for another reply. Finally they agreed that the remote was bad and I should return it. They never offered to ship another remote but indicated to ship it back to...I had already waited two weeks for delivery from...and now I have to ship it back and wait for a refund. Just not worth the hassle.

Summary: Best MP3 CD Player available!
Review: Besides being one of the more affordable mp3 cd players on the market, the SlimX has more features than you can shake a stick at! The on-the-remote controls have easy and intuitive menus for the computer-savvy user. It is really like having winamp in your pocket, with its visualizatoins (Just small, in the corner of the window), programming and list-editing feature, and more! Plus its the thinnest mp3cd player around! Ignore the claims that this cd player is horrible-- Its the best!

Summary: Everyone should install the Firmware upgrade! It's easy!
Review: I just got the iRiver SlimX, and noticed one glaring fault. When I played CDs that had songs continuing right into the next (like live concert CDs), there was a small noticable gap between the tracks. Before returning it, I decided to upgrade the firmware, and found the process to be painless, though a little less obvious than it should be. It basically involves downloading the file onto a CD and popping it into the SlimX. Here's how to do it:

1. Go to iriver
2. Click on "downloads"
3. Click on "iMP-350 Firmware Ver 2.10 Type #1." Not Type #2. Type #2 is for the Chinese language versions of the product.
4. Click on the link "imp350us-v210.zip (605450)," and download it to your desktop.

5. Open the Zip file (winzip, if you don't already have it), drag the file to your desktop.
6. It should say "iRiverFirmwareVer2_10US" and have an iriver logo on the icon. Double-click on it.
7. Click on the first button, "IRIVER firmware upgrade."
8. Another icon should appear on your desktop. "Imp-350.hex"

9. Burn this file into a blank CD-R. If you have Windows XP, this should be as easy as dragging and dropping the file into the window.

10. Load the CD-R into the SlimX, and press play. Don't touch the unit while it does its thing. When it is done, it will simply shut off.
11. Unload the CD-R and turn it on. You'll notice you'll have much more intuitive menuing interface, a bunch of feature enhancements like automatic equalizer matched to song genres, and the "track gap" phenomenon, among other unnoticable bugs, all gone.

Enjoy! I know I will.

Also note: anyone who is into Korean or Japanese music should seriously consider iRiver over other units-- it displays track titles in their original language. If you're into Chinese / Taiwanese / Hong Kong pop, then consider the iDP-400, which has 16 MB of memory to accomodate simplified / full Chinese characters.

Summary: nice little toy
Review: I bought this cd player after carefully going over all the reviews that were posted and I am not disappointed. this is one of the coolest cd players I have ever seen! There are so many features on this player that it verges on the ridiculous. The sound quality is excellent although I would recomend that you use another pair of headphones. The ones that came with this unit [were bad], but this not unusual even for high end cd players nowadays. The volume is just fine and there is 5 eq settings ( 4 preset and one user defined ) The FM tuner workes very well and is NOT just an after thought. The battery life will be very short at first, but after you have broken them in the duration should be as promised (12-15 hrs). The carrying case is a joke ( a simple velvet bag that offers no protection ). There are simply too many features on this player to list them here. It will take a couple of hours to set all of your preferences and FM presets. All of the functions are controled through the remote and the user interface can be a little difficult for some to learn ( you need an IQ of at least 90 or your in trouble). The user manual is of little help. The firmware updates are making this player even more fun to use. The newest one ( version 2.10 ) expands the available EQ settings to 7 and even enables the player to automatically select and excecute the setting to match the genre of music that is on the ID3 tag of the cd ( only mp3 or enchanced cds ).
