Summary: Very good product, reasonable price
Review: Let me preface this by saying that I have absolutely no vested interest in giving QuickBooks a positive review. That aside, the program delivers everything one would expect, and while not perfect, is reasonably user friendly. It seems so fashionable to criticize QuickBooks, but it's an admirable piece of software.

The complaints regarding having to pay a fee for payroll, while somewhat understandable given that Intuit is not as upfront as they could be, are largely unjustified, as all accounting programs charge for this service. The Intuit fees are signifcantly less than what one would normally have to pay for third-party payroll service.

Summary: QuickBooks Upgrade problems
Review: My 3 year old QuickBooks suddenly stopped working. A dialog box asked me to re-enter my long-lost old registration number. Intuit said that QuickBooks only operates for a limited number of times before it requires one to re-enter the registration code. Even though they believed that I did not have a "pirate" copy, I was told that they did NOT HAVE any way to give me my registration code. That meant all my data was locked up forever.

I protested that this effectively stopped my business. Was there no solution? Well....I could upgrade for $...

And if I did upgrade, they would immediately give me a code to unlock my data! I paid the $ on my credit card....Bought Peachtree. Transfered the data.[...]

Summary: Award for the worst customer service.
Review: I have used Intuit's Quicken products for many years and have always been happy with them, so when I started a business a couple of years ago, I bought Quickbooks 2001. Immediately I felt betrayed when I found I could not do payroll without paying Intuit's high priced subscription fee. That was one of the main reasons for buying Quickbooks. I now do payroll manually and just use Quickbooks to keep the checkbook balanced and to send out invoices.

Recently I tried to do an online update of my checking account and ran into some errors. I spent several hours with their incompetent tech support telling me it was a network issue. After some research I am told I will have to upgrade to 2003 to be able to use the online update feature.

I am going to upgrade, but it is going to be to something that doesn't say Intuit or Microsoft on the box. That alone will be an upgrade.

Do not buy. Terrible product, even worse product service. I would recommend a pencil and a napkin over this product.

Summary: How would you like to pay for this sir ?
Review: Do not upgade...I had a problem installing 2002 upgrade, called intuit and they wanted me to pay for tech support. The problem was a software issue, finally got resolved, no thanks to intuit. The people at intuit are rude. The girl wouldn't let me talk to a tech. She kept asking me (@ least five times) what credit card I wanted to use to pay for support. 2002 is slower than my 2000 verison and has features that requires you to use intuit services. Beware the later the verison the more you will have to upgade every year. I will not upgade anymore any and my acct. told me I can submit printed reports as instead of down loading an acct. review.

Summary: Intuit Blew It
Review: I was so pleased to read the other reviews BEFORE purchasing the 2003 version. I was so disappointed with 2002 and their support which is really just a sales pitch for their Payroll Program. I knew I was dealing with a salesperson when she exclaimed "Oh my, that's a lot!" to the information that our payroll was for FIVE employees. Why can't we have a basic business program that deals with the REAL necessaties of a small business instead of all this extra stuff we neither need nor want? It's like killing a mouse with a shotgun. And don't get me started on Microsoft!!!!

Summary: Thanks!
Review: I want to thank you all for keeping me from making a big mistake! I was all set to buy this product before I read these reviews. I went back to a local store to re-look at the product and in their specs on the box I didn't see anything about having to subscribe to these services.
I was left with the impression that it was all in the box. as of now, I am still looking for software. My heart-felt sympathy goes out to you all, I have been in those shoes before.

Summary: Quickbooks Requires Gator Spyware to Run
Review: I have verified that Quickbooks pro now REQUIRES the Gator SPYWARE to run. They don't tell you this, but it silently installs Gator, a long known spyware program, and if you uninstall the spyware with ad-aware or manually remove the spyware Quickbooks tells you that you are trying to open a document created with a newer version than your software. When you go to the automatic update online, it REINSTALLS Gator spyware. BEWARE. My intrusion detection system showed the PC with Quickbooks/Gator sending ten times the amount of information back to Gator than the pc's infected with the regular version of the Gator spyware. Spyware advice sites report that Gator sends the information you fill into forms back to them. Now imagine filling in a credit card number on a web form...

BE AFRAID. BE VERY AFRAID.

Summary: BEWARE!...INTUIT DEMANDS EIN, PRIVACY INVASION!!
Review: I've used Quickbooks for 8 years and LOVE the program, HATE the lack of customer service. I was forced by Intuit to upgrade this year because they would no longer sell me the payroll tax tables for my older version. Purchased QB2003 directly from Intuit. I asked lots of questions regarding payroll, specifically if the new tax tables came with purchase of new program. Was told they did. Was also told there was a 'conversion problem' with payroll from my old version & new one. It was HIGHLY recommended by sales that I purchase 'tech support' because I would only get one phone call & then it would be $75-$150 per call. ONLY AFTER I PAID and received the product did I find out about the EXTRA charge for this yr's tax tables, AND THERE WAS NO CONVERSION PROBLEM, and I WOULD HAVE TO GIVE INTUIT MY CLIENTS' EINs to Intuit or they would not give me the tax tables. IMHO Intuit has no 'compelling business reason' to have this confidential information about my clients. The EIN is comparable to the business entity's social security number. This is NOT public information![.] Try getting the EIN of a local business from the IRS. One uninformed sales person even had the nerve to tell me the 'government required' that I give up these numbers to Intuit. Absolutely untrue!!! I DO NOT DO PAYROLL ONLINE, nor do I contract it out to Intuit. What would you think if I sold you a car, you paid, but before I would deliver, you'd have to give me the social security numbers of your neighbors??

Until this policy changes I will not use Intuit's products nor will I recommend their products as I have avidly for 8 years.

Summary: Thanks for the reviews
Review: Thank you for the reviews. I was just upgrading from QB 2001 PRO to 2003 Pro and had some concern regarding the new version. My bookkeeper wants me to move to Peachtree after a bad year of working with TurboTax and QuickBooks together..thanks for the advice. I shall return my QB 2003 Pro purchase and find another product.
