Summary: Necessary upgrade
Review: The additional features (like line art and the photo gallery templates) are just the icing on the cake. The real benefit to me was a bug fix.

I couldn't open the root web of my new site using FP2000 like my host provider recommends. I kept getting an error message that the site was on a protected drive. I purchased the upgrade and discovered that FP2002 had no trouble opening the root web.

I have not used any other WYSIWYG editors. FP2002 does the job!

Summary: Proprietary Web Software
Review: I have noticed a few bugs in the progam, especially in the preview mode. In addition, the "new stuff" are simply Microsoft Network hyperlinks that redirect your web traffic to MSN.com. In addition, the navigation is now proprietery and unless you run a full Windows XP platform you will not be able to take complete advantage of the application. You will also need to find a Web Host that supports Microsoft Extensions to run many of the available functions. The only enhancement that I liked was the new photo album feature. The program did so many unexpected changes to my site that I ended up deinstalling the software. In addition, you must register the software on Microsofts site or you will only be able to launch the application 50 times.

Summary: EULA
Review: Read the End User License Agreement before you even think of using this software. I couldn't believe my eyes. MS has placed limits in the End User License Agreement on the type of information that you can publish using their software. You are not allowed to publish anything that is anti Microsoft, MSNBC, MSN, or Expedia or against their products and services on any site that is related to the use of the software. They also say that you may not publish or promote racism, hatred, or pornography. While I am not affected by any of the above and I don't care for any of the above material, I do find it absolutely appalling that a software company would go that far out of their way to limit free speech. You may only publish material that Microsoft deems acceptable. That, to me, is unacceptable.

Summary: No Support and Instructions Incorrect
Review: I am very dissatisfied with FrontPage 2002 support, its contained Help option and the "manual" that came with it. I e-mailed a question to Microsoft and a very polite rep responed promptly. He wrote a full page telling me that support was not provided beyond installation. He wrote a fulll page to tell me this, and my question, that he did not answer, could have been answered in four sentences. Further, the information provided in the poorly written very small manual and the Help in the program have been flat incorrect on at least two occasions. Instructions to perform a couple of routine functions are incorrect and will not work. You're on your own when you buy this.

Summary: good and bad
Review: This is a good program to get a website up and running. If you use a previous version, it is definitely worth your money to upgrade to 2002. Too bad they didn't fix the most annoying thing about frontpage. Under many options in their menus, there are still no modules to choose from. Just blank windows. Why bother putting these unfilled choices in there? Examples: DHTML Effects...none, Macros...none, Addins...none. Do they really expect me to create these first? Everything at my website that is awesome has nothing to do with frontpage.

Summary: FP2002 - The Good, Bad, & Ugly
Review: For those like myself who are longtime FrontPage users, the latest upgrade has added some neat new features but overall is a bit of a disappointment.

I have only been working with the software for two weeks as of this writing, but have already found some bugs, difficult to use features, and changed features that seem to be that way just for the sake of change - good or bad.

A few examples; One of the things that I really liked about FP was the visible tables/cells - they now are only sometimes visible, which can get confusing if you have a sliced graphic. This seems to be an attempt to parallel Dreamweaver, but there's no apparent way to turn if off and on.

The BG sound is greyed out most of the time - this seems to be a bug.

After saving changes to a page and closing it, sometimes when you return later, the latest save is gone and it has reverted to the former version! Not exactly a time saver!

There is now no way to set the amount of compression that FP applies to jpg images - unlike before when you could 'undo' the compression in the properties menu.

Page margins have to be manually entered into the HTML before the 'margins' tab shows up in the Page Properties dialogue box (this was also a problem with FP2000)

The image preview has been removed from the image dialogue box To make matters worse, instead of staying within the web that you are currently working on, the image dialogue opens into the image folder where you last visited. This is particularly slow if you have many webs on your hard drive, as you have to re-navigate.

So far those are the major complaints. They do have some new features that are interesting, such as the ability to add in-line frames, and a few other more sophisticated features. It would have been nice to see expanded DHTML choices, and additional 'hover buttons' - maybe FP2005!

Summary: WHEN PRODUCTIVITY MEANS ALL !
Review: I USE FP SINCE V.97 AND NEVER USED IT ON A MS SERVER. FP IS THE BETTER EDITOR EVER MADE, SINCE YOU KNOW HOW TO CONFIGURE IT ,IN ORDER TO NOT GET UNEEDED RESULTS. AFTER THIS , IT'S A BREEZE. PRODUTIVITY IS THE KEY. YOU MOVE A IMAGE ARCHIVE FROM ONE FOLDER TO ANOTHER AND ALL THE LINKS RELATED TO THAT IMAGE WILL CHANGE TOGETHER. THE SAME WITH ALL DOCUMENTS. SO WHY CHANGE MANUALY ALL THE LINKS OR USE THIRD PARTY CGI PROGRAMS TO DO THE SAME ? THANKS TO FP EXTENSIONS COMPLETE WORKS THAT SOMETIMES TAKES A WEEK , CAN BE MADE IN 2 TO 3 DAYS. CAN GOLIVE, DREAMWEAVER, PAGEMAKER, HOTDOG, HOTMETAL OR ANY OTHER EDITOR DOES THE SAME ? IN REAL TIME ON THE WEB ? SORRY I THINK THEY'RE NOT !

Summary: Just plain bad
Review: Frontpage is notorious for changing standard HTML into a "special" version that does not work with other editors and does not conform with international standards of HTML (any version). It is the opinion of every webmaster I have spoken to, since looking at this product, that FrontPage is an attempt by Microsoft to sell their wares because only Microsoft servers have no problem serving up webpages made with this product. Do yourself a favor and skip this software for anything else. The Adobe GoLive is still better than this or Dreamweaver.

Summary: It is pretty good
Review: .... The new FrontPage is much improved and has many new features for dynamic content and has great look and feel. It actually comes very close to DreamWeaver and is even better in some areas. The best thing is that now you can easily include automatically updated Web Content on your page, like News and Weather. And if you need dynamic, database-content, you can use CodeCharge with FrontPage, which creates much cleaner database-connected sites than DreamWeaver UltraDev.
