Summary: What standards?
Review: Frontpage is never 100% W3C compliant and this is no exception. The pages only look right in Internet Explorer unless you do some major tweaking in notepad. Try learning the code yourselves (you'll find it is not that hard-- and with practice your pages will look far better than any program can produce) or use software from a company that is not trying to establish its product as the only browser.

Summary: Great application with major defect - buyers beware!
Review: I really like the ease of use and have used FP2002 to build two comprehensive websites. Up until last month I was happy - but there is a major defect that could spoil your opinion. Until they fix the problem, it has soured my opinion of FP2002.

The problem - due to an unknown (at this time) bug that some believe is a result of an early June 2002 Microsoft security download, your FP2002 may lose its ability to view the WYSIWYG webpage when you click the "Preview" tab. Others are also reporting this problem on newsgroup sites. Essentially, Preview loses its ability to recognize your website's CSS and will not load the proper formatting. Your workaround is to view the web page in your browser. No word (that I'm aware of) from Microsoft on when they will address a fix for this defect. Better hold off your purchase until they can fix it. Why pay for 75% functionality?

Summary: FrontPage is great for many many users!
Review: I've been using FrontPage through several versions. I have never had the difficulties some users have had. FrontPage CAN be uploaded with an FTP program, in fact, this is the way I prefer to use it. It is terrific for beginners and intermediate users. Despite what you may have heard, it's code is NOT WEIRD anymore. It hasn't been for several vesions. And the only time FrontPage changes your code is if you don't know how to enter it into FrontPage. It does change the FORMATTING of your code, but if you are using FrontPage to do the pages, that should not matter to you at all. It definitely has more power than most website developers need, especially small companies and user's homepages. As a professional in this area, I rarely use FrontPage or Dreamweaver anymore, but both are excellent products. I would never create a page of complicated tables without using one or the other though. A WYSIWYG editor makes tables MUCH FASTER than using HTML, and there's no chance of forgetting a tag. In short, it's easy to master and does the job many users will want it to do.

Summary: Is upgrading to FP 2002 worth the money
Review: FP 98, by far, is the best, and fastest HTML editor - although, it doesn't have all the whistles and bells of FP 2000 or FP 2002.
FP 2000 very sluggish. Using it is like typing in the "hunt & peck" method.

Using Dreamweaver eliminates the needs for the .htm extensions in web addresses.

Which way to go? My humble opinion is to stay with FP98 and learn HTML & XML for editing the code.

Summary: Front Page 2002 makes your PC unusable
Review: I was using Front Page 2000, together with Win 98 and Office 97, without much trouble and got my things going, but once I decided to install the new "upgrade" for Front Page 2002, my whole system drove crazy.

Now the system constantly crash when using Outlook and Internet Explorer - almost make my PC unusable.

This problems are not mentioned in any known information source I have looked into. I'm almost decided to dump the new Front Page in my garbage can and go back where I was - when I was able to use my PC without restarting it 5 or 6 times a day.

Summary: Backed into a corner forced to buy
Review: I have been able to build websites manually and with a little cut and past on some exotics. However a friend got himself painted into a corner with some weird (IIS) thing that no one heard of. The people hosting the sight did not know what it was that they were hosting and the environment must be some Microsoft toy as there are not functions for security available from this end.

The site could not take standard html or cgi scripts for a form mailer. The pervious designer used Cold Fusion which is not supported. Fmail.pl did not work (no perl even though they said it would at first) It boiled down to some clumsy proprietary script with a (.ast) extension. The form was too complex for word and needed the functionality of FrontPage to modify. I have it running now put I learned my lesson Apache, Netscape, and general UNIX/Linux environments are all easy and flexible to deal with (especially shell accounts). Stay a way from (IIS) even with FrontPage.

This product merged with the XP system seamlessly and did what it was supposed to up front. I was disappointed in the flimsy pamphlet that came with the CD instead of a manual; however I bought a copy of Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Unleashed ISBN 0672322056 and it was more than enough to go way beyond my plans.

I tried the product on Windows 2000 and lost a lot of the office products. I could never get it to ftp or http in or out of the product (the same sites that worked well with XP). It was a horrible experience all around.

Summary: Very Easy to use
Review: I've used almost every version of MS FrontPage. It is simply the easiest to learn and use. I've tried various packages, but none have the features I need. I have numerous websites, one of which is close to 150 pages, and I love using FrontPage. The includes, photo galleries, and other features make this worthwhile.

Summary: FrontPage Getting Closer
Review: As a Business Web Site Developer specializing in small and medium business, our company has found the FrontPage platform to be easiest to teach for "self administrators." The largest problem we have had in recent years is developing sites with database capabilities affordably. FrontPage has finally set up an interface which allows users to set up simple databases. In addition, media players and more custom features should make sites much more creative. The main problem areas are Shared Borders may get lost so keep a copy of them on another page, the Index page sometimes disappears so you need to reinitiate from the browser to find it. The inline frame is a nicer solution than the traditional framed pages; however, you need to keep in mind the viewable space. Finally, some of the features require FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions. For some this may be hard to find a provider for but they are out there.

Although FrontPage does have some big bugs, the value, especially in the database area makes it a good upgrade.

Summary: Web Novice
Review: A very exasperating product experience for me. This product probably works fine it you are hooked into Microsoft's web hosting service, but I was already happy and content with my Earthlink account. Much to my dismay I find that Earthlink does not support Microsoft's web extensions. This means that the lovely page I created on my hard drive looked half done when it was uploaded to Earthlink. Specifically, all of my embedded pictures would not show up. I wish I had known about these problems before buying the software and spending a day creating my web page. I did find some warnings on Earthlink's page, so I just did not do enough due diligence I guess. This leads one to ask: Is this a Front Page problem or an Earthlink problem? I am not sure, but I am happy with Earthlink based on past experiences. Also, given that you have to pay a monthly fee to use Microsoft's hosting service, I am very suspicious of them. I wish this product was more open to other hosting sites, because I did not find it too difficult to use. If you buy it, though, just be prepared to use the Microsoft web hosting service.
