Rating: Summary: OK But only 1 year's update included! Review: I followed the instructions to the letter, with Emergency Recovery disks, all applications closed & so on. Installation was S-L-O-W, don't be in a hurry when you do this (I use a Celeron 1.2 Ghz with 512Mb RAM).Also at first my PC ran slowly too, web pages especially took forever to load then appeared in a flash, as if the Web connection was in trouble. A Re boot solved that & there hasn't been a re-occurence since. The Virus file update following install was fine & quick, but the re-scan for troublesome files took FOREVER, over 30 minutes on my 60Gbyte drive! (with 20 Gbyte of data on it) It turned up no viruses but highlighted some unwanted, nasty, intrusive MalWare & rogue dialers, so I'm happy with the results. One MAJOR bone of contention is you're only given 1 year's worth of virus file updates. This is a definite No-No when you pay $50 for this software. I'd expect at least 2 years, preferably 3. Obviously Norton has taken a page out of Microsoft's book. The PC runs fine, no blue screen (yet!) no noticable slow downs (I know people who have this trouble) & all my peripherals work (I know someone who's digital camera won't connect when Norton is running). Relieved? Yes, I use my PC for studying & work so now I'm a happier knowing a virus attack is a lot less likely.
Rating: Summary: A total DOG...with NO Support Review: Symantec is so worried about software piracy that they have rendered their products worthless to those of use who BUY their software. You have to re-activate the product at random or any time you make a change to your system, and you only have limited activation attempts before it shuts itself down. Match that with NO support for the product and you have the worst combination of software available. A poor program with NO support from Symantec. I have tried to contact Sysmantec 5 times and have never received a reply to my requests. You can of course PAY extra for support, but when the software is BAD out of the box, you do not expect to have to pay for support. This program also will really SLOW down any system. All in all the WORST software I have ever purchased. Unless SYMANTEC gets their act together this will be my LAST purchase from them. Avoid this program at all cost. It is worse than what it is supposed to protect you against. It should be re-named Norton AntiConsumer.
Rating: Summary: Piece of Junk Review: Absolutely do not buy this product. First, though you KNOW it IS be compatible with your machine it decides to do a system "check" to make sure you really are compatible at install time. If it doesn't like you or your machine, it won't install. I can't install it; so I tried to Customer Service to help me get it to install. After almost an hour on the phone trying to get in contact with customer service (which they wanted me to pay for--they should pay for my cell phone bill). They told me in three words or less that this product won't work on my machine. (This was after they spent ten minutes of my time collecting information--after the hour wait on the phone and being hung up on.) Obviously unless you have the perfect PC, you can't have this product and they won't help you--they don't care.
Rating: Summary: Fast & Extreme Protection Review: I'll keep this brief: If you are any bit active on the internet - you need this product. Norton Antivirus has saved my "computer" more times that I can count, and without it I would probably have gone insane.
Rating: Summary: Support is a disaster! Review: I spent all day trying to get an actual human on the phone after going through the huge maze of options on their automated telephone line. It took literally hours of being on hold trying again and again to get the right combination of options on their list. If you ever need customer support from these people plane to take a day off of work to sit on the phone being frustrated and aggravated and wishing you never bought their junk. They obviously don't care one bit about their customers, once they have your money their attitude is an obvious "screw you"! Stay way from this poorly run company, stay FAR away!
Rating: Summary: Cannot uninstall Review: I installed the trial version. After noticing that it severely impacted performance, I tried to remove it. The program does not appear in the Control Panel/ Add Remove Programs list, so it cannot be uninstalled using the normal facility. I sent an email to Symantec support, but so far I have not received a reply. I would hate to have to clean this thing out manually. Skip this program. There are definite problems here.
Rating: Summary: Finally gave up on Norton...junk, went with PC-cillin Review: I will be very brief in my review. When folks used to ask me about anti-virus software I would tell them to go with Norton without hesitation. Times have changed! Norton no longer provides respectable support for their products. 2004 Norton Antivirus is pure 100% junk with a company that no longer cares about support. Trend Micro, however, offers support...true support for their products. They WILL be the "Norton" of the future and are rapidly gaining a solid reputation. A solid product for sure. Any questions can easily be researched or answered by support. Look at the reviews for this product and then review Norton's antivirus product...WOW! Nothing is perfect, but this is close. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Never Worked Review: I was never able to install this product. I had previously installed the trial version of this same product. Eventhough I uninstalled the trial version before attempting to install the non-trial version, after I installed the non-trial version, I kept getting the message that the trial period had expired. It seemed that I was still running the trial version eventhough I had removed it. Since it was a download version, I never received the activation code because it was supposed to be integrated in the program files. Therefore, I was never able to activate the product. Symantec support is not adequate at all. Though I found information on how to completely uninstall the product in www.symantec.com, after following the instructions and reinstalling the product, the trial version came up AGAIN. I wrote to symantec and after two weeks got a reply which directed me to the page I had already found. I finally gave up and decided to return the product.
Rating: Summary: The Best Just Got BETTER! Review: I just purchased this as an upgrade to my 2003 subscription that I had renewed on my Windows XP. Not something planned but an emergency move when my installation of MSN Premium Software for my Verizon DSL service, ruined my Norton with an accidental startup of McAfree Virus Scan. I had not meant to harm my current Norton, but when I checked the McAfree offer, it began to download, and even though I told it NOT to remove my Norton, it corrupted the registry, and after several attempts, I could not repair the problem. My auto-protect and email scanning were off and could not be enabled, and then I even lost the default automatic live update too. I went to the Symantec site, and purchased this Norton 2004 as an upgrade to my 2003 software subscription, and paid $39.99. I also purchased the backup disc for an additional $9.99. Dealing with the download process was a bit tricky, but the wizard removed the old corrupted files, and I was able to save a backup to the computer too. Installation was a cinch once I got past the inittial glitches from the old data from 2003. NOW I feel this was a blessing in disguise. The 2004 Norton Anti-virus is WAY better than the 2003 with more great features. It is still in the easy to use window as soon as you click on it. As advertised, detects Spyware and more expanded threats the 2003 version did not. You don't NEED a spyware program, 2004 has one built in, and it works great. You can remove manually, or set Norton to do it for you. I like to see and make sure of what is being deleted first. In any case, you really get to cover it all for one price and I feel you get alot for your money here in this basic package. Live update works the same way, quickly downloading all the latest updates for new threats. Although I have it set for automatic live update, I check it frequently anyway. I did a full system scan and it took 18 minutes total for me. I find this just as easy to use, and WAY more great features that give you confidence to surf the net and open your mail without worry. I don't understand what all the complaints are about here. I almost did not buy the product after reading some of my fellow reviewers opinions, but went ahead and bought as I trust Norton and have never had any problems with their software. My Windows XP running on a HP Pavillion Intel Pentium 4, 2.53GHz and 512MB memory has not been slowed, or any other operating problems since installation that have been mentioned by others. It has performed as well as usual, with no glitches or any other errors due to Norton. Bottom line is, for a great Anti-Virus Software program, with more great and necessary features than ever, that are simple to use and apply to your everyday needs in the cyber-world, DO NOT HESITATE to purchase and run Norton Anti-Virus 2004.
Rating: Summary: Norton Antivirus 2004 Upgrade Mistake Review: I recently upgraded from the 2003 version for my XP system. I have never had signficant problems with Norton Antivirus until this version. Now every few days, the program gets an "internal error" which permanantly turns of the protection. The only advice on the web site is to uninstall and reinstall the program. See for yourself. Search the Symantec web site for "internal error"; there are many types. I also agree with all posts that say this is a drain on your system (much slower startup, disk runs continuously, Internet Explorer starts slower, etc.) Save yourself a headache and do not buy this product.
