Description:
With new viruses appearing in the wild on a daily basis, your data is under constant attack, and it's essential to get some protection. McAfee's VirusScan is one of the top antivirus products, and also includes PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption software and First Aid 2000 to help diagnose computer problems. VirusScan conducts an interview during installation to help schedule regular scans, create a rescue-boot disk set, and run the new Safe-and-Sound utility, which automatically backs up selected documents to a free area on the hard disk. VShield provides around-the-clock protection and monitors all files that are created, renamed, modified, copied, or executed and blocks access to the files it suspects are infected. Internet-born viruses get a rough time as VShield scans all downloads and checks for hostile ActiveX controls and Java applets. Access to specific Web sites can be blocked using either a URL or IP address, and the new x-ray feature scans e-mail messages before they are even opened. VirusScan can be scheduled to run at regular intervals. If a virus is detected it leads you gently through a clean-up process that lets you clean the infected file, quarantine it, or delete it. The signature file can be easily kept up to date as the McAfee AVERT team regularly posts new updates on its Web site. Viruses are a constant threat, and there's no excuse for not protecting your PC. VirusScan slams the door shut in their faces. --Dave Mitchell
