Summary: Avoid this junk at all cost !
Review: Cons: You can't repair it, you can't remove it, and the tech support stinks.

Pros: It looks pretty and takes up lots of disk space. The CD disk makes for a nice dog toy and the box is good for small bits of rubish and perhaps as another dog toy.

Giving this a rating of one star is generous, infact I feel they should be giving me a few stars back in exchange for this worthless junk. Avoid this mess at all costs !!

Summary: Works flawlessly on my Vaio Laptop w/Windows XP Pro
Review: Experience so far in one word: Perfect...VirusScan installed flawlessly on the first try and its user interface is very easy to use. I have not noticed any degradation in performance in my laptop at all. Not a bit. Seems to run as fast as before. The auto update feature works well too, allowing you to schedule times for your computer to automatically check for virus definition updates. That way you always have the most current protection. You get a free year of virus definition updates too.

And VirusScan comes free with a firewall program which seems to work very well. I use it every time I go on the internet and it seems to always pick up port scans or attempts by programs on my computer to send info out (like Real Player automatically trying to check for updates). It then gives you the option to allow or disallow this activity. Very neat. There is also a Tracer feature that enables you to "ping" a website and find out the IP address and owner of the website. A nice feature, but frankly, it's too complex a feature for me and I haven't found the need to use this. Bottom line is, this program is a great value for the money -- even if it didn't have the rebate offers attached to it. The rebate offers make it that much better.

Summary: Looks good on paper but didn't work for me
Review: I bought Ver 7.0 (free on mail-n-rebate)from BestBuy, took home & it appeared to be getting ready to install. Install screen came & then it jumped to an error saying Autorun failed. Tried everything per manual, won't install. Store gave me second CD & didn't get install screen this time & got Autorun error. I had ver 4.0 mcafee on my system. Store asked me to contact Mcafee. I was on hold for 30mins & hung-up. Then phone said will charge me by time if I need tech support. Asked the store to show whether this CD would install on any test PC they have & would go further than the install screen. I told them if they could show this I can take the s/w & talk to Mcafee. They turn down this suggestion & finally offered me Norton Antivirus 2003 (Hang type pack, not box) for 29.99. Took home put the CD in, BOOM!, Bingo! everything was cool. Now I use Norton AV 2003. By the way I'm 40.

Summary: Essential for any version WIN2K OS...
Review: I don't know what everyone is complaining about this software. I got screwed with that Klez.h@MM virus back in 2001. I used to have the McAfee 4.0 version. I admit, I had configuration problems with that one, maybe becuz I was on WIN98. I upgraded to Win2K Pro and bought retail Virus 7.0 and it installed flawlessly. It didn't bug up any other software (I run CAD software so I know performance! - aka memory hogging stuff). Now these idiots send out this sobig/Luv worms and "friends" I had to reinstall it to add a the firewall option (I didn't install it the first time) and closed up the ports and have survived wonderfully without being infected. My warning logs were over 100 hits on some days for being online for only 30 min or so. The Firewall runs wonderfully!
McAfee's website is much more user friendly then it was 2 yrs ago - troubleshooting was no problem for me to fix little bleeps if they showed up. Emailing to tech support wasn't bad either - I got responses within 48 hrs during the work week.
I have kind of a bandaid system of motherboard, hardware and hodge-podge software and due to technically difficulties SP2/SP3 cannot take to my system, so McAfee is my only defense (other then preferencing IE) I'm not a paranoid type of person but with WIN2K being subject to these hits lately, I have survived and its all due to McAfee.
The new VirusScan 8.0 is/will be out soon, so either buy this and download it on a T1 line or go to McAfee and get the 8.0 version - all the updates are on that.

Summary: Worked until I had to install on XP
Review: I had a copy of this running in WIN 2000 & it worked fine. I changed machines & installed it with XP & it never worked. I kept getting error messages when I booted up my Outlook. My husband's computer (on a Dell installed version) kept catching viruses on the same messages (luckily I did not open any of the suspicious attachments). After uninstalling & reinstalling several times to no avail, I contacted McAfee support (by instant messaging). The first tech support took 30 minutes & no sucess - basically telling me to uninstall by hand about 15 files & then reboot. The second time on tech support, I spent 45 minutes trying to convince some idiot that the program was NOT working - finally forwarded one of the virus messages to him & his "LAB". Wow, I was right!!!! His fix that took another 30 minutes included a reboot (so I lost touch with him) & did not work. I am giving up & buying something else, my time is more valuable that this!

Summary: Big mistake
Review: I had McAfee version 7 on my computer for one year. I updated to Version 8 according to their instructions and have had nothing but problems since.

Their technical support is all but non existent. Now I can't delete the software. It has an insert disk box popping up everytime the computer resarts, their shredder option has disappeared, I'm getting runtime script errors and I keep getting booted of my internet connection.

Their only technical support is through email, chat or $2.95 aminute on the phone. I have gotten no where with the first two options. I can't afford to spend $2.95 a minute on the third option.

They have apretty goood racket going. They sell you the product, don't take responsibility for it and then want to charge you to fix what they messed up.

Summary: Excellent combination of Anti-Virus and Firewall!
Review: I have used VirusScan 5.21 together with Black Ice Defender firewall without any problems other than significant slowing down of the system at times. I purchased VirusScan 6.0 but decided not to install it given the large number of problems reported on this webpage. Having read the favorable comments on VirusScan 7.0, I decided to purchase it (free with the special offers at the time from McAfee and Amazon.com)and give it a try.
The results are amazing! I have not had my computer (a 450 mhz- "slow" these days!)operate so well since I purchased it four years ago! Absolutely everything runs extremely well, with no slowdown of anything whatsoever!
The amount of information McAfee provides with respect to all aspects of what is happening all of the time is astounding! Installation is very, very easy- no problems at all! I very highly recommend it and appreciate having customer reviews on this website!

Summary: Just Trouble
Review: I installed McAfee Virus Scan and developed intermittent problems with other software. It also occasionally prevented the printer from working and disabled Cookie Cop. I have since used AVG (free program) and Norton AntiVirus with no problems.

McAfee's support was terrible.

Summary: McAfee VirusScan and Firewall similar to shareware
Review: I really regret discontinuing my Norton service in exchange for the cheaper McAfee. I'm encouraged to see the thoughtful comments of so many more sophisticated users echoing the same thoughts I have about this product. I find it very, very depressing to buy a retail product loaded with pop ups and "partner advistements" penetrating the fire wall. This has been a regretful experience couple with lots of frustration. Pay a few dollars more and stay away from this product.
