Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Reliable protection, reasonably priced
Review: We have used OfficeScan since version 3.1, when we first learned about this pioneering product, and faced the horror of having to update individual desktops one-by-one. Now the other major players have their own centrally managed desktop antivirus products, but the maturity of OfficeScan shows in its ease of use and thoughtful extras. Trend Micro's frequency-of-updates for pattern (signature) files also is excellent.

There are a few weaknesses, though. The first is that the documentation and the online support documents can be a bit difficult to understand. A lot of the work is done in global centers in Asia, where presumably English is not the employees' first language. It makes sense to have 24-hour product support staffed where the sun is shining, but one could wish for a bit stronger language skills. The second is that the reporting available from inside the product, while attractive and detailed, is not super-flexible. You can export a variety of information as CSV files for review in Excel or import into a database program, but this requires some cross-referencing and is immediately out of date. Competitive pressures probably will drive some updates in this area.

On the whole, if you do your homework, you will find that network and e-mail administrators trust and like Trend Micro products because they work. Your boss may never have heard of this company, but you won't go wrong with OfficeScan Corporate Edition.
