Rating: Summary: Cool Software Review: Easy to use - easy to install - easy to manage - One of the few software products I have worked with that allowed me to back up multiple systems across multiple platforms to one media - and restore that information. If all software were this easy to use everybody would be doing it!!
Rating: Summary: ArcserveIT Review: Not a bad product, but not a great one. The interface is far less intuitive than Backup Exec's. When used with Dell tape drives, it is not unusual to have to power down the servers periodically to reload the tape drivers. On the other hand, Backup Exec requires a registry key change in order to work with Dell DLT drives, and they won't tell you that until you have talked to them long enough to advance to their "advanced" support, and paid them about $90. With Compaq servers, both brands seem to work well, with Backup Exec having the advantage of ease of use.To ArcServe's credit, it really does do competently what it is supposed to. I have used it several times for recoveries from complete failures with total data loss. You must be careful to understand precisely what is required for a restore, however, such as exact disk partition info, and site and organization name for the MS Exchange agent. There are also some peculiarities regarding supplying the admin user name and password. ArcServe will not require you to enter it, but will not restore data in some cases unless you do enter it in the appropriate places.
