Summary: If you have WinXP, you need Norton 2002
Review: Agreed, this version of Norton has fewer utilites than the previous incarnation. However, if you own a Windows XP machine, this is a MUST. It has an excellent disk defragger and scandisk (both things Windows has notoriously lacked). It also has WinDoctor, which fixes all those broken shortcuts & incorrect entries in system files that make programs crash after you've moved things around. Norton also seems to have fixed its AntiVirus program's problem with interfering with other PC functions.

Summary: NOT designed for XP
Review: I bought this program, assuming from the "Designed for XP" sticker on the box that it was, in fact, compatible with XP. However, the disk scanner cannot access the NTFS filesystem, which allows full use of XP disk features, while XP is running - and the bootable disks don't support NTFS as well. So, you will spend good money for this utility, only to have it run the Windows scanner instead. Plus, the rescue disks are still written in DOS and don't work well with a non-DOS-based system like XP, and a number of the features only run on 98 or ME systems! This is not designed for XP - it is a program designed for Win98 and problematic with XP that someone happened to slap a sticker of approval on. It gets 2 stars because some of the other tools could be useful.

Summary: A little surprised
Review: I dont understand why anyone would by this particular product. Dont get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy other Symantec products. However, most of the features of Norton Utility are also available in Window XP. Just click on start programs accessories and system tools and you will find a disk defrag and disk cleanup program. I find that the Norton Utilities would then be a waste of money.

Summary: A Rush Job for XP
Review: I have been a huge fan of the 2000 version of Norton Utilities, have recommended it to friends and family, and would never set up a friend's computer without also installing that utility. I never had any problems with it. However, upon installing Windows XP on my PC, I had to buy Norton Utilities 2002 (the 2000 version would not even install). Despite my understandably high expectations of this new release, my first impression was one of disappointment. After a month with it installed, I'm still disappointed, and it seems to me this piece of software was slapped together as quickly as possible to be available for XP.

Some of the features work OK, even though, as others have stated, there are fewer in this version than the previous release. Speed Disk - what have they done to that utility? It's slow, it doesn't appear to actually fully defragment your drives, and on top of it all, even the graphics are cheesy. I'm not sure I understand what's wrong with Disk Doctor, but it doesn't fully agree with XP, insofar as it won't seem to actually repair anything it may find wrong.

In short, Norton software generally is excellent, but this particular software release - where it relates to Windows XP - falls WAY below what should be Symantec's standards of quality and effectiveness. I'd recommend it for what it does have that XP lacks, but I do so only halfheartedly and suggest you don't get your hopes up.

Summary: Mixed feelings
Review: I have had mixed feelings about the Norton Utilities for years. On one hand it gives you some improved tools, over those provided with windows (disk defragmentation, scan disk, registry editor, etc.). On the other hand, my experience has been that the utilities are sometimes the source of the problem rather than the fix and there is deffinitely some damage done from "overengineering" your PC with the tools. I wouldn't recommend them for inexperienced users - Norton has made them really easy to use but they can really do some damage if you click the wrong button. More experienced users usually use a single utility out of the package anyway (I only use it for the registry editor).

Summary: For crash free computing
Review: I honestly thought these utility products were a waste of money until I got one, now I wish I had this product all along. I bought it to find and fix problems and that it does. My computer has not crashed since I loaded Norton.
