Summary: This product has saved me on more than one occasion
Review: I've read both positive and negative reviews for Roxio GoBack 3, and on balance, I would give it five stars. Yes, it takes up hard-drive space, and yes, it does (noisily!) churn my hard drive, but it has saved my keester on a couple of occasions. I'm really glad I have GoBack installed.

For instance: A few days ago, I was logging off my online service when my system froze up. When I finally extricated myself from the Internet, WHAMMO! Major crashola! My system shut down and would not boot up when I turned the computer on. Hence the lovely "System Restore" which comes with Windows XP would have been out of the question - but thanks to GoBack's feature where one can hit "Spacebar" and boot up from the hard drive even when one's system is unreachable, I was able to revert my hard drive to the day before, and now my computer is running again.

I work, I go to school, I write. My computer is my lifeline. I cannot function without it, and simply cannot afford to waste time having my computer "down for the count." And while I know how to *use* a computer, I am no system/programming expert who knows just what keys to punch, code to type in, stuff to tweak to fix a system disaster. I am *so* glad I have GoBack. Crashage happens. Sometimes one doesn't know *what* one was doing to cause it, but the system goes bye-bye anyway. This is where GoBack comes in. The convenience of being able to use the Spacebar to boot up and go right to GoBack to fix any wonkiness is a godsend. So is the ability to get a clean slate when the software one installed, or something else just goes wrong.

Of course, one should still be careful, back up one's data regularly, and have anti-virus software. But in my opinion, GoBack is a very useful tool for those who can't afford to have a system out of commission for any length of time and aren't experts with system tinkering.

Incidentally, I use Windows XP on a Sony Vaio laptop and GoBack works just fine. I don't burn any music CD's, so YMMV on this one, but I haven't had problems with GoBack so far.

so it made it hard to re move

Summary: Save your computer. Save your sanity.
Review: If you only buy one more item of software make it Go Back 3 Deluxe. I've just spent two hours transferring files. At the very last minute I made a stupid mistake which, would normally have taken me another two hours to correct. In five minutes I was back to where I should have been with the aid of Go Back 3. Make sure you get the Deluxe version because you can go back to individual files with it whereas the plain one only lets you go back to set times that IT chooses.

Summary: Booting problems
Review: My computer has never worked correctly since I installed GO BACK. It will not boot, most of the time, unless a cd is in the drive. It can be any cd, not necessarily GO BACK 3.0. If GO BACK is disabled, it boots normally.

Roxio technicians have been actively attempting to solve the problem, and efforts are still underway when I send them more system information.

The product works fine except for the problem introduced in the boot process so far as I can tell.

Summary: Very Useful
Review: Programs like GoBack are very useful when they work correctly. Unlike the restore program that comes with WindowME, GoBack won't mysterious vanish one day making it useless. I had it on Windows 98 and am putting it on ME. The only problem I had with it was that I had to disable it whenever I wanted to play a dos based game, and disabling it causes it to lose all the data it has stored of changes to your system so you have to start over when turning it back on.

Summary: Oh no! I forgot to back up my hard drive!
Review: Since the first version of Go Back I have recommended this software to everyone I know. I regularly back up my hard drive but this program has saved me many times when my computer has slowed down, crashed or otherwise misbehaved. Sometimes I have had a problem with my computer after installing new software, downloading something off the internet or my kids have put some game on my computer that screws everything up.
Every time I have needed to "go back" to an earlier date where my computer was running OK this software has saved me. The only complaint I have is that I can't reserve as much space on the hard drive as I would like to expand the choices of dates to "GO Back" to.

Summary: Lots of problems with XP
Review: Slows down computer a bit and will not let computer shut down. You get to the 'windows is shutting down" screen and that's it. Hard restarts are not good and I had to do about 10 of them until I removed Go Back 3. Computer is faster and get this...It actually shuts down. Don't use this product unless you are a moron. Windows has a system restore on it. If you screw something up...Use that.

Summary: Save me time
Review: Somewhere I lost a file in my system either by corruption or due to an error my part, but I could no longer go onto the internet Microsoft Money would not start up and the background on a couple of programs were diffucult to read. Rather than trying to re-install each software program until I found the one with the problem. I just selected a recent date which I knew there were no problems encountered and the software resotred my system with everything back to normal. Saved me a lot of time and frustration.

Summary: trouble with go back
Review: Symantec isn't what it used to be, they are not the same once-great company who built a solid reputation with "Norton Utilities". Nowadays, their software is buggy, and they offer NO free, live tech support!

An example is GoBack. When Roxio had it, it was a great software. I used it on Windows 98 2nd edition and never had one problem with it, and it saved me a lot of hassles, a number of times.

But this version does not work with XP. I have a Dell computer, right out of the box; that is, no extra hard drive, no petitions, just a plain old computer with some software and utilities.

I loaded GoBack 3 Deluxe and then my computer would not start. It looped through the Windows Screen and the GoBack screen, never opening XP to my desktop.

I thought, "No problem! I'll call tech support!" Yeah, right! There IS NO TECH SUPPORT BY PHONE. Not unless you wish to pay them $30 per issue, to talk with you. You read that correctly: The software you just bought does not have any live phone OR chat tech support! The only option is to pay $30 for their help, or to write them an email

I wrote them an email.

They wrote me back the next day, but not with solutions. Rather with a whole bunch of questions that seem fairly irrelevant. Who makes my hard drive??!! What is my Bios version? They suggested I call my computer manufacturer, to get the answer to these 5-6 questions. I did so.

I wrote them back.

They said that I should go into my registry and do a lot of editing (editing which could TOTALLY eff up my computer if it isn't done 100% accurately; and who knows if they told me the right way to do it?)

So I am out $30, because I waited past the 30 days before installing it. (I procrastinated it, precisely because I had a feeling it would end up being a nightmare installing it! I was right.)

In conclusion: Do not buy GoBack for XP SerPack 1.

p.s. I still say that GoBack is no good for XP SP1. But at least Symantec did give me a refund on it when I complained. Too bad, when this product came out, and W98 was the main OS, it was a good product.
