Rating: Summary: Still the easiest and best by far Review: Powerquest and again created a great partition program. It is extremely easy to use whether you know anything about hard drives or not it doesn't matter. Everything is wizard based and askes you if you will install another operating system just using it for data which operating system you are using, everything you could thing when you want to partition your hard drive. This is the only program that i have used to partition my hard drive and wasn't worried about my data. This is BY FAR the best. Its quick too
Rating: Summary: ONLY FOR ADVANCED COMPUTER USERS Review: PowerQuest has done it again. They delivered another outstanding product for the computer world to use. Be warned though, this product is and was meant only for advanced computer users, such as computer resellers, data mangers, technicians, etc. If you're just a normal user, or do not normally do that kind of work, stay away from this product. It is extremely dangerous to use innless you know (I mean look at yourself in the mirror and say, yes I really know what to do!), what your intentions are and what you are doing. Otherwise do NOT use this product. If you are a data manger, technician, etc. Partition Magic has an arsenal of amazing tools, and can be extremely useful. Having problems partition large RAIDs, Partition Magic does and outstanding job handling all of the partition tables, and formatting, etc. It really makes life easy so you do not need to track down different versions of FDISK, and formatting utilities. Lastly, who or what ever you are and before messing with partitions tables, etc., ask this question, "Do I really want to gamble without a backup?" . Good Luck!
Rating: Summary: Works great! (That is, when it works at all) Review: So far I've attempted to use PartitionMagic 7 twice on my computer. The first time to resize my secondary hard disk to make room for a Linux partition. The computer froze up half way and the partition was lost. I made a backup of it just in case, so I ended up simply restoring to a newly-made smaller partition from the backup. The second time, I was attempting to resize a freshly made partition into two smaller ones. It finished "successfully," yet Windows 2000 hasn't been able to identify either since. I ended up reformatting that partition as well. Luckily, no important data was on it. So far, my success rate with Partition Magic has been 0%. Both times, the quicker and less painful method was simply backing up with Ghost, reformatting, and restoring, which I had to do eventually anyway. Powerquest warns in the instructions to backup your data before attempting to make any changes to your disks. Thus I am completely baffled as to what its true use is. Resizing partitions is painfully slow, and even attempting to do so apperantly from my experiences carries a dangerously high failure rate. Do you really want to take the risk of trusting your data to this program?
Rating: Summary: Partition Magic 6.0 Review: Software is the best for partitioning hard drives and setting up the hard drive for an operating system. Used the partition duplication feature to Copy a partition, that contained an operating system on it, from one drive to another. Everything transferred as advertised but when I disconnected the origional drive and tried to boot from the new drive the computer stopped cold. I have tried to use this feature 2 times and the results are the same each time. Finally bought Hard Drive duplication software to get this to work.
Rating: Summary: Works most of the time, but..... Review: The several times I used it, Partition Magic worked fine. Then last month it died in the middle -- leaving a 30 gig partition invisible. I called tech support, only to discover that I couldn't speak to a tech person unless I bought a new copy. You may think you're buying a licensed copy of Partition Magic, but according to the support person I spoke to, you will get no support six months after the next version comes out. Could tech support have recovered the partition that Partition Magic trashed? I had no way to find out without buying a new copy of the program. And that I wasn't willing to do.
Rating: Summary: documentation inadequate Review: The title of this review says it all. The documentation does not address the problems that the user who has average understanding of operating systems confronts. That said, once you get it to do what you want it to, Parition Magic is a great tool
Rating: Summary: Bad experience with Partition Magic Review: The very first time I ran PowerQuest's partition magic, it generated an illegal partition. Worse, it could not correct the bad partition boundary or recover my lost disk space. I communicated with PowerQuest's tech support staff for six months before they claimed to have a fix. For me to get this fix, however, I would have to BUY a brand new version of partition magic. Forget that the version I bought never worked. Forget the warranty; it expired while tech support was researching/ignoring the problem! I reported this chicanery to the BBB. PowerQuest's legal staff tried to convince the BBB that this was a hardware problem and that I never followed up after my initial complaint, so the problem must have been resolved. Their story changed, however, after I provided a copy of all correspondence between myself and PowerQuest's technical support staff (who admitted it was their software bug). Unfortunately, PowerQuest eventually declined BBB's offer of independent arbitration. My recommendation -- avoid Partition Magic and any other PowerQuest product. Bad software. Bad company. Note - If you have a single boot-disk configuration, either just re-install and set the disk partitions at installation time, or try Partition Commander.
Rating: Summary: PM and Toshiba Laptops Review: This is actually a post to previous post regarding his Toshiba Laptop. I just installed this product in a Tecra 8000 and recieved the same problem, word for word. Display settings and Acpi.sys. I decided to take a little time to find the problem before I gave up to a reformat... I found it. It can be easily fixed under windows 98. The device drivers are ok, and are all on the disk, yet they will not be functional. If you do not have the Windows .cab files on your HDD, you will need to get them there, as your cdrom will likely not work. You can do this by starting the computer with a startup disk for win98 and selecting cdrom support... copy the win98 or win98se directory from the cdrom to the hdd. Restart without the start up disk. The problem. The PM software changes the way windows sees the BIOS settings and the files from wich it reads are not updated. The files need to be restored from thier original location. They can be extracted manually if you are keen to the windows extract system, or you can use the Windows System file checker. Start -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> system information ---- (pull down) TOOLS -> system file checker. selected ok to auto check for corrupted or non updated files. The files that are corrupted are Settings.*** Acpi.sys and possibly kmixer.*** NOTE: you may have other corrupted files from other things and they can be fixed the same way as long as you have the original files backed up. Not all files checked are MS Windows files. The 3 files pre mentioned are in the Windows98 cab files and the checker will automatically replace them. You may have to direct it to the cab files. Once restores are complete, restart computer, problem should not happen again. In the end, after some crafty troubleshooting, PM did work, and merged my drives together properly. Extensive searching on the web reveals that this problem may be isolated to Toshiba Laptops or systems using the acpi.sys drivers for Bios information.

Rating: Summary: Great product but be wary of length of support. Review: This is great product, but PowerQuest's length of support for their products is really bad. Once your complimentary support runs out, then they force you to upgrade to their latest product before they'll even talk to you.
