Summary: Is there a software that fix Norton's software?
Review: Norton SystemWorks obviously hasn't been tested thoroughly with Windows 9x. The scripting error is endless and annoying whenever you try to do something with the program (just do a search on Symantec web support for "scripting error" to see how common this problem is). For Windows NT-kernel based OS like 2000, XP, it works fine. But you can't never cleanly uninstall the program the right way - it seems Symantec doesn't want you to ever live without their software. Uninstalling it doesn't clean out all the program files and registry entries. Worst, it could leave your system crippled. For example, on Windows 2000, I used the anti-virus software included in SystemWorks, after installing it I found my DHCP Client service out of order. Why? Because SystemWorks' installer didn't remove the registry key that associated itself to the DHCP Client Service (SYMTDI is the dependency). Thus, the DHCP Client service was referring to a non-existent file. (DHCP is used to obtain a dynamic IP address and look up the proxy information, without it, my computer can't connect to the Internet). So I had to manually edit the registry and remove the dependency from DHCP Client service entry. On Windows 9x platform, the uninstalling process is even worse that SystemWorks was unable to fully uninstall Antivirus program and I had to boot into safe mode bypassing the VxD driver to manually edit the registry and delete the program. All this not to mention how much system resource SystemWorks hogs. Symantec's software used to be great, but they are not anymore. If you need a Firewall, get ZoneAlarm. Windows comes
with scan disk and defrag. If you want a better defrag utility, check out Diskkeeper. For anti-virus, use TrendMicro's PC-Clinin, or Central Command's AVP, both are simple and use little system resources. None of these software will cripple your system like Norton's.

Review: DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION. Unless you want to become a Symantec Beta Tester and pay for the privilege, steer clear of 2002 until the next version is released. I got a refund on my software.

Summary: Norton Systemworks Pro 2002 - Don't go there with Windows XP
Review: A note to any readers who are contemplating purchasing
Systemworks. I have always been a user of Norton's Windows
programs, be they Norton Utilities, Systemworks or
whatever. The last version, however, I would recommend
against buying, at least if you are using the NTFS file
system. The Speed Disk feature is much slower then
Microsoft's built in defrag aplet, which is an offshoot of
Executive Software's Diskeeper program. While you can use
Norton Disk Doctor to diagnose a drive, you must use XP's
built in CHKDSK function to actually repair it. The new
program does not have the benchmark features from the
former releases in the System Information. As previously
stated, I don't see a good use for Cleansweep, as XP has a
faster and better uninstall program. There is no longer a
registry editor or optimizer in the Norton Utilities part,
XP now incorporates Faxing, so the limited version of
WINFAX PRO is no longer needed. A limited version of Roxio
Go Back is included, but whether this is superior to using
XP's System Restore and Backup (for data) features is
highly debatable. The Rescue Disk has been discontinued.
The only programs that seem to be worth having are Norton
Ghost and, of course, Norton Anti Virus. Since I purchased
Norton's Internet Security program, which includes a far
better firewall than XPs, a parental control program that
actually works with Windows logons, and the same anti
virus program, I really have no need for Systemworks.
Possibly, the diagnostic features (Win Doctor) are
worthwhile, but while this always identified a lot of
problems and cleaned them up, it never actually bailed me
out of a Windows problem that I was epxperiencing (I'm not
even sure if this is available for XP, or what it does. XP
right now is running fine - if it ain't broke, don't fix
it). I saw a note on Microsoft Newgroups that Win doctor acutally trashed one uer's machine to the point of unrecoverability.

Summary: System Works - The Competition has a lot to learn
Review: I had previously bought McAfee Office 3.0 for my laptop and had nothing but problems. I had a difficult time removing McAfee Office 3.0 from my machine and still had traces of the program showing up. Anyway, enough about McAfee Office which must be the worst program built ever. Nortons System Works is easy to use, fixed the problems McAfee left behind, and is worth every penny. The one button checkup makes life much easier. The integration and slick look and feel makes using this program enjoyable. I have never been happier.

Review: SystemWorks 2002 works well under XP so far. Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Utilities are both fine. CleanSweep is okay, but not terribly useful. Not much new since the previous version.

That my Internet has not been protected . Here I ran the normal,testing . Told me that I was protected.
Very direct wording. Giving ways to correct the problem. With the
Sept.11th tragedy . First thought is being protected in anyway.
Anyway meaning in a very honest to be way.
What I can Not understand with all warnings from Norton. Warning
of No protection was never brought to my attention.

Summary: Norton Systems Works
Review: I've read a few of the reviews here, and it seems to me that the users who don't get along with NSW are people who already have problems with their PC when they load it. Ensure you don't already have any problems before loading it (especially with Windows ME!) and that you have already backed up your data BEFORE you install it. NSW is a very powerful tool and in the wrong hands (Novice users) can be disasterous. Remember Windows ME, 98 all flavors are TERRIBLE memory managers, if you experience systems crashes after an install (even if you have 640 MB or more of memory)chances are you had problems to begin with usually related to the flavor of Windows your using can also be bad memory. You can also try Windows NT or 2000 much better at managing memory.

Summary: Any better than 2001 version?
Review: This software tried to uninstall SystemWorks 2001 and basically corrupted my Windows 2000. I had to reinstall the OS and then SW2002 installed fine. However, I am kind of disappointed at Norton's Win 2000 support. Seems half of the features in Norton Utilities are unavailable. Kind of sad, since lesser known Ontrack SystemSuite has much better support for Win 2000. Also, I don't see much of an improvement over SW2001.
