Summary: Not as good as older versions
Review: It stops viruses, but there are several problems that I have had.

1) Bogs down the computer. I test my computer regularly, and running it halves my data transfer speed from my hard drives. I never saw this problem on previous versions. My processor also runs at about 40-80% utilization, whereas it used to run <40. I haven't changed any of the other programs that are running in the background of my computer.

2) It looks at the date differently. I had to adjust my date on my computer, and now it says that my use period is up, even though I bought it in June. Talking with Tech support, they walked me through de-installation/re-installation, and it still has problems. I have to manually download the updates now.

3) Not quite an issue, but since I have to manually download virus updates, I have noticed that the download portion of their website is always tied up, to the point of timing out. I have a cable modem, and don't have problems with their main site, but when I go to their support site, it is a roll of the dice. (I have tested this for at least two weeks, with a high number of problem days.)

I have bought McAfee for years now, and at this point, I have decided that I am going to try Norton.

I do have to say that I have *never* had a virus, and it has caught a few that would have infected my system. I guess if you can live with the performance hit, and don't have to use their support site, it would be ok.

Summary: Very Unhappy with this Product
Review: I upgraded to VS 7.0 hoping that it would solve some of the deficiencies of VS 6.0. I should have known better.

It took several tries to install 7.0. The first thing it did was inform me that I was running an old version of McAfee's firewall and that I must uninstall it first. Now, why on earth would the McAfee install routine not be able to uninstall a previous McAfee software version for me?

So far, I've been completely unable to install the firewall, which is included (or more correctly, buried) on the CD-ROM. I keep getting an error message with no explanation of what it means or how to solve it. No mention of the firewall even appears in the documentation (a very sloppy oversight).

My machine is an 850 Duron w/ 512 Mb of memory and Win 98SE. When VirusScan 7.0 is running, the machine absolutely crawls. The mouse pointer skips around and everything runs in slow motion. I'm having to disable VirusScan just to get decent performance out of my machine (upgrading is not an option right now).

Oh, several other reviewers mentioned the mail-in rebate. Well, I haven't received mine either. In fact, I got a rejection slip even though I'd followed their directions PRECISELY. The rebate form instructs you to cut off an inner flap containing the UPC code. I was told that I hadn't included the UPC (which I had). Apparently, the rebate center processors can't even follow their own instructions. I've sent in the rebate request twice and called the rebate center. They promised to expedite my rebate, but that was weeks ago.

I am highly dissatisfied with this product and would not recommend it to anyone.

Summary: Updates "freeze up"
Review: Cannot update virus definitions. Customer support is non- existant, no replies to e-mails except for F.A.Q.'s on web page. None of the suggestions help. It's not a configuration issue, as my Norton will update just fine. I suggest trying Norton SystemWorks 2003, as it works much better and the Customer Support is superior.

Summary: Be careful with the mail in rebate
Review: I purchased this software a few months ago and sent in the mail in rebates. I have still not received it. I have switched to Norton since McAfee customer service was less than helpful in sorting out the situation. I wouldn't hold my breath that McAfee would send the rebates.

Summary: It's awful, go get Norton
Review: What a lousy product! I had problems installing VirusScan on my computer and had to redo it several times. After installing an reinstalling it frequently locks up my system, usually when I am in the middle of something. And forget about getting the rebate. I submitted mine 5 months ago and still haven't received it. When I call the rebate co they say they are waiting for McAfee to approve. When I call McAfee they say there can't find my record. Just go get Norton's AntiVirus.

Summary: Watch out for incompatibility with wireless devices
Review: Generally I like Macfee, have used it for years. But there is a nasty problem with VS7 Home edition (likely similar for other editions) where, after installing a USB *or* PCMCIA 802.11b wireless card and rebooting, you lose TCP/IP - ALL networking dies. (You get a message called "Mobile Devices Properties - the TCP/IP Transport is not installed"). This led me down all kinds of bad paths (looks like a networking, driver, or activesync problem) and FINALLY saw here on Amazon that there might be a conflict with Mcafee. Deinstalled it and now all is fine, except that I'm riding the Internet bareback. I was getting a little tired of all the noisy updating and "look, I'm here, still watching for viruses" messages and resource drains anyway. I guess I'll just be more vigilant with attachments, though for the price I can't complain, except all the lost time was frustrating.

Summary: I like it a lot
Review: Well, I admit, I got it for free, because my university provides it. I have been using it for awhile now, and so far I am very satisfied. It is much faster than Norton, and doesn't put as much pressure on the system's resources.

One definite complaint, though, is its interface. Norton beats McAfee in this respect, no matter how hard anyone tries to defend McAfee. In Norton everything is in front of you. The keys, are big and comfortable. They are also aptly named.

McAfee's console based interface gets some getting used but it is not hard by any means. It is not as easy as Norton's, though.

So bottomline is this: Buy this product and after the initial getting used to process, you will have a smooth piece of software that doesn't abuse your system and is always on the lookout for new viruses.

I am now a dedicated McAfee user and I am trying to forget the resource-eating-monster Norton.

Summary: Mc Afee virus scan 7.0
Review: Let's face it if you can't install this software in a matter of a few minutes than there's either something wrong with your computer or you. Also as I've read above why would anyone want to run Zone Alarm firewall with 7.0 when it already comes with a firewall. The only problem I have is that it hangs up my machine at shutdown slightly but no antivirus package is perfect. As far as the firewall goes it takes a little tweaking then it leaves you alone.

Summary: Much Better than Norton
Review: This has allowed my (Pentium III, Windows 98 v.2) to operate efficiently, which I couldn't say about Norton Antivirus and Systemworks. Just don't install the firewall.

Summary: NOTHING BUT GRIEF
Review: I purchashed this software 5 months ago. I keep my computers OS updated reguarly. Newest security patches ect. Keep hard drive defrag ect. From the minute I loaded this product and it updated itself from their site the computer slowed to a crawl. Would refuse to shut down at times. Would love to freeze up when online. Yes it can scan files quickly for known viruses. But it you have it running while your working it's a dog. Found if I diabled it things were fine then enable and have it run it scan when I had free time to do somthing else. This has to be the worst piece of software that I have purchased in the 15 years I have owned a computer. I finally uninstalled it.
