Summary: Works If You're Willing To Be Patient
Review: I recently downloaded the 30 day trial from McAfee for SpamKiller. I had a few minor problems in the beginning getting my email list set up so I wasn't filtering out family and friends. After reading the online help and following the directions (I use XP and full blown Outlook) I was able to filter out spam quite effectively. I have had no problems with the SpamKiller locking up my system or keeping me from getting email. I can understand the frustrations some previous posters have had but I have not had any major problems.I would recommend this product for most people but please remember you may need to be patient when installing and setting it up for the first time

Summary: What kind of spamfilter is this?
Review: I recently installed Mcafee Spamkiller, which came with the Internet Security Suite. Upon configuration, it gave me messages asking to change my username to my full e-mail address, and incoming server to 'localhost'. Upon bootup, it said it was not protecting my computer. It did not filter but a few emails. I had to uninstall and reinstall and put my full email address as the username and 'localhost' as the incoming server during the 2nd setup and it STILL corrected me, and didnt filter anything. Its bad enough that there are corrupt spammers out there, but I dont need to be cheated by a company that is supposed to be protecting me. And the designers dont care. They just want $$$$

Summary: Not so bad
Review: I searched the web for spam filters and came up with a lot of hits, but I wanted something from a "big" name. Symantec didn't make their offering apparent on their website. So despite being a lifelong Symantec customer, I went with McAfee's SpamKiller. I downloaded it from McAfee's website on November 30th - long after 5.0 had been released. I installed it and promptly found that what I had was version 4.xx.xx which does not support multiple users in an XP environment. Their tech support confirmed I had an old version and didn't really seem concerned about the fact that I had downloaded it from THEIR site moments earlier. I was very disappointed and let McAffe know. They promptly refunded my $39.99 (yes, $39.99). I was even more "disappointed" (trying to keep this a "G" rating) when I found that I could buy v5.0 for $17 and change from Amazon. I ordered it from Amazon but kept the old version installed until version 5.0 arrived. I can't complain - the older version does what it says and filtered 80-85% of the spam "right out of the box" (or as downloaded as the case may be). I set up some custom filters and they worked great as well. My 5.0 arrived today and I installed it without incident on my XP machine with multiple users. Again, it does what it says. I do like the 4.xx.xx interface better, but you can still get where you need to with 5.0 - you just have to try harder. They just hide the complex stuff to appease the less technically savvy folks. I'm using Outlook Express in a networked environment and it works fine. I have an "unsupported" arrangement where other machines on my network access the Outlook Express message store on a dedicated server. Spamkiller is installed on said server which isn't really doing much of anything else. Perhaps this is why I don't perceive this software as being a drain on system resources? In any event, Spamkiller 5.0 works great and I'm happy with it. I can't give McAfee anymore than 3 stars because they sold me outdated software on their site. Jim

Summary: Buy Spamkiller 4 instead
Review: I've been a spamkiller user for a few years, even before McAfee bought it. I'm extremely dissapointed in version 5, which I was so looking forward to. Half the reason I use SpamKiller is to be notified of new emails, last years version would change it's tray icon when new mail was received and when I hovered my mouse over it, it would tell me how many good/junk emails I had received. It would also play sounds for friends/good email/junk email. This years version only plays sounds for junk email and doesn't notify me in anyway other than a gunshot for junk email that I have any new mail (I'd prefer to know when I had new valid email!). Then on top of this the product seems flaky, for instance when I clicked on a junk email and clicked add a friend (in previous versions this would add the user to the friends list and rescue the email) it showed my email address not the senders email address, so to add a message to a friends list I have to type in the emailer's from address overwriting my own email address. Also on McAfee's forums I've read of alot of people having issues with the outlook integration and some have had problems with rescuing messages. Be sure to check those out if you're still determined to buy this product. Maybe in a couple patches some of the old functionality will be back, but until then don't buy version 5.0.

Summary: Virus Welcoming Committee a.k.a Spam Killer 5.0
Review: It allowed viral spam to infect our harddrive, while at the same time blocking useful email. They should be paying us for what we went through. If you get a virus, you have to pay $50.00 for removal support, which costs more than the bogus product they're selling. Also, the program is just a set of rules for your computer to follow in email filtering. It is not a smart product. Doesnt block spam.

So, non-functional product (with my ISP, at least.) And they weren't very appologetic, or quick with the refund. And the address that the tech gave me for sending feedback doesn't function either.

Summary: What a POS, backed by useless tech support
Review: Locks up FREQUENTLY (2-3x per day), requiring reboot to get it to work again (WIn XP machine). Tech support, in their infinite wisdom suggested that I reboot! Sheer genius!

Review: My subscription ran out on 4.0 so I went an purchased 5.0.
After installation what I learned is this: they completely redesigned and destroyed a perfectly excellent product,and it won't run smoothly unless you are running a Pentium 4 machine. As far as I'm concerned this was the only product I liked from their product line and now they've just killed it.
