Description:

Handheld computers are more than just data readers. Plug thinkDB 1.4 into your Palm OS-running machine, and soon you'll be creating and tweaking databases on the fly--even miles away from your desktop.

The format is easy to translate, either through Microsoft Access or simple CSV files, so that working on your favorite software is never more than a step away. The program itself is comparatively small, but the data files can take up nearly 1K per record, which quickly fills up memory if you're not careful. Although many will find the data-writing capability a nice feature, comparing favorably with the FileMaker reader, it seems unlikely at best that many users will choose to design and create their data sets on the handheld. Those who do will find the process fairly simple and intuitive at a cost of complexity--searching, for example, is more limited.

The samples and manual make thinkDB easy to learn and start using right away; however, those who have limited database experience might find translating files from the desktop a bit daunting at first. Overall, the package should appeal to any Palm OS user who needs both to read and write data files while away from the office. --Rob Lightner

Pros:

  • Translates most database formats through MS Access
  • Create and modify data on your handheld
  • Flexible view options
Cons:
  • Large file size
  • Limited complexity
