Summary: This is simply a great product.
Review: I was hoping I'd see more reviews for this product since it is in fact a very nice mp3/cd player. It's funny because I never thought to look at any reviews for the player until I actually bought it. Should have thought about that. Fortunately, it met my expectations and I really like it. There were two main reasons I got it. One was because my bro wanted a cd player as well (so I gave him my old Atrac) and 2nd was that it had that nice looking remote that would make it a whole lot easier to switch between songs on the go. Especially since it lights up.

Well...I ordered the player directly from Sony and got the warranty and everything. Just the box that it comes in alone is something worth staring at. It's a deep black colored box with a silouhette of the side of the cd player on the box. Lets you know your product is gonna be something special. It's funny because I knew I was in for something when the cardboard box the shipment came in was much larger than the actual box. Though when I felt the box it was only about 3 or so pounds. So I had a feeling what it might have been. Any ways, enough about the box, on to the actual product. Well...once you take everything out of the box you'll notice that this thing is small as (insert 4 letter word here). It's less than half an inch high and weighs like...nothing. LOL. It looks even smaller because of the sweet design. The slick metal body is a nice touch and ensures durability. Though with the remote you'll pretty much never have to worry about dropping the actual player.

Which speaking of the remote, the remote is really cool. Made of the same material the player is, it is sturdy yet compact so it's not totally out there to make you look like a geek. The LCD light on the remote is bright which helps when you're listening to it at night and only comes on when you push a button to conserve battery life. The controls are easy to get to and activate as long as you don't have "Shaq" hands. LOL. All you gotta do is hit 1 button to switch between multiple albums on a cd and all the functions to adjust the volume/bass and play order are all on the remote. The only gripe I have with the functions on the remote is that it takes a little bit longer for it to fast forward and rewind through mp3/atrac tracks. Though that's probably because they are compressed files. Though thankfully that's not a huge issue since the fast forward/rewind functions don't need to be used very often any ways.

The sound quality is very nice coming from such a small player. Everything comes out nice and clear and I could even hear stuff that I normally didn't hear or was hard to hear on other players. Some people complain about the bass, though I think it's pretty pumping on the player. I was kinda sketchy when I saw that it didn't have the mega bass like some of the other Atrac players but, instead it has an equalizer with different functions to allow you to adjust the bass as well as other parts of the sound. I just keep it on the heavy setting though to get the most bass out of the player. Especially if you're listening to some hip hop or techno tracks with some nice headphones you'll get some surprisingly good bass out of this thing on the heavy setting.

I was surprised when I saw the battery type it used. It didn't use normal AA's. Instead it uses a rechargeable battery stick that's very slim and fits easily inside of the cd player. The only qualm I have with it is that it takes a while to recharge. Specifically about 5 hours to charge from empty to full. Though I hear most mp3 players like ipods take a while to charge their batteries so I guess it's expected. To counteract that the batteries themselves last a long time. You can get 20-30 hours with just that one battery before you'll need to recharge. Then when you need to recharge just charge it overnight and you're straight. If you want you can add a rechargeable battery pack that uses a regular AA battery to get even more life out of it. Only problem with it is that it's kinda clunky and defeats the whole purpose of the cd player. Ok to use if you're listening at home but, you don't want to show people that clunky AA adapter on your sleek cd player.

The Sonic Stage software cd is useful if you don't have any other program for converting/burning your audio files. The instruction manual doesn't necessarily do a great job of telling you how to use it and it's a little cumbersome at first. Though once you figure out how it works it's very simple to use and I haven't had any real problems with it. Allows you to easily organize all of your audio files into groups and copy them onto cd's when you're ready. Since it's an Atrac friendly software I don't believe you can convert audio files to mp3 files though atrac files are pretty much the same thing and are even smaller. So they allow even more songs on one cd. Just can't play them on much anything else other than Sony cd players. Also a nice bonus is that you get a card for 5 free songs off of the Connect music download store that Sony offers.

Probably the most important thing to note about the cd player is that the stock headphones that come with the player are only good at low volumes. Once you reach to higher volumes it starts to hurt your ear drums and the sound quality gets pretty bad. I would suggest buying higher quality phones that don't rattle your ear drums at the higher volume levels.

All in all it's a great product that I'd definitely recommend. Lots of features, slick silver metal finish that ensures durability, as compact as a cd player can get, great sound quality, long lasting battery...and what I love the most is that LCD remote that's easy to use and makes it so you never have to touch the actual cd player outside of switching cd's.

PS: Though one interesting thing I heard from another review is that the player also comes in black and gold colors. I've contacted Sony through their online support and they seem to deny it but, I saw a picture of the black one on a UK website so I dunno. I like the silver though.

Summary: still going strong!
Review: I've had my unit for about 6 months now and am more pleased with it than ever! I went through quite an ordeal trying to figure out if I wanted to invest in the ipod craze or stick to a much better version of the walkman than I had been used to for years! Today, I'm glad I decided on the sony dne-10. One of my most important criteria was initially with how much battery life I could get from a portable system- and this one clocks into WEEKS til I have to recharge (i always use the battery supplement) and this is simply a matter of lifestyle for me- I use this unit while biking to work and have zero time to recharge every 2-4 hours as is the reality with an ipod (at this time anyway). I can not stress how important this was for me.

Now while this unit plays mp3's what I have discovered is that for me, downloading and burning mp3's just hasn't lasted and I've found myself once again buying the real original cd's (at my local used cd shop- paying $10 cdn). I still download and borrow from others but curiously, for me the whole mp3 craze seems to have been just a fad- so far. Sure, millions would disagree but I did spend some time debating this with myself!

The walkman itself is simply beautiful- I truly have no complaints. The remote is a god-send. I keep it clipped to my backpack and it is effortless to use! It is as simple to read and operate! The casing is beautiful- simply, elegant. Period. A wonderful little unit.

That's my take on it after owning it for some time now. I had hoped that I had made the right decision in the beginning. It's now in hindsight that I am thrilled I went in this direction. Once the ipod can match the battery life as this unit, and IF I really do become a convert to having ALL my music at my finger-tips in mp3 format, maybe then I'll move over in that direction...however, having invested in a new tivoli system that only reads audio cd's and cd-r's, that day is going to be a long way away.

One last thing- the SOUND out of this little silver guy is simply amazing!!!)

Last last thing- DO invest in a better pair of earphones- I recommend the sony MDR-EX71- terrific earbuds!

Highly recommended!

Summary: Great CD-Player, but lacks a radio
Review: The Good:
* Sony Proprietary Atrac3Pro Compression - Burns more high quality audio files per CD than possible with audio compressed in other formats.

* Excellent battery life! - This device is used 2-3 hours per day, after 2 weeks the battery is only one 'notch' below full.

* Remote Commander - All functions accessible from this one small unit, great layout and easy to navigate functionally.

* Virtually Skip free - This device spends most of the day in a laptop case, bouncing around while commuting, I have only experienced a skip once (jogging down a long flight stairs trying to catch an express train).

The Bad:
* The 490 song per disk mark is achieved by using the maximum amount of compression (thus further losing audio quality).

* No AM/FM radio

* Sony Atrac3pro files cannot be played on other devices. Only Atrac3Pro devices and computers with SonicStage installed will be able to play the audio files that are stored on your Atrac3Pro CD.

* Earbuds - I have yet to own a pair that provides both comfort and quality sound (would pick up a pair of Bose tri-ports to go along with this).

Overall this CD player is well worth the price, solid construction & design and a great alternative to the portable mp3 players (for those of you more concerned about preserving audio quality).

Summary: not worth the price
Review: This product is way too expensive. For a little bit more money you can get the Zen Micro with 5 gigs of space. The only plus side I found with this product is:

1) it has an optical output, though you have to spend extra money and buy a minitos cable.

2) it's extremely light and thin, plus it comes with a cool remote.

3) it has AVLS, so you won't go deaf.

Take away these 3 features and you pretty much have your basic mp3 cd player that you can buy for $50. I doubt anyone will find the extra frills (e.g. ranking system, bookmark) useful.

Summary: WOWW
Review: WOW!!, i have to say this is one of the best sony products this year!. it's an upgrade from the powerful d-ne1. This is by far the smallest sony cd player!! even smaller than d-ej2000. but it is couple point ounces heavier, nothing too noticable. I love the design of this thing!! it has an attractive magnesium and aluminum body!!. i have the silver one, didn't even know they had black and gold ones. i woulda picked the black one but oh well. The software so far hjolds me about 350 songs. the quality is almost as good as a normal cd!. ok lets see te upgrades from d-ne1:
-smaller
-design
-new recharging cradle
-1 battery and 1 AA battery holds up to 85 hours!
-3 different lights for ff, rw, and play
-upgraded stock headphones (although not good as tho'se $50 headphones, it is still much better than the other stock headphones).
-it has full metal body
-THE BIGGEST ADDITION TO THE CD PLAYER!! it has an EQUALIZER!!.. if you want more bass than level 2 bass, just adjust the equalizer. if you want more treble, just adjust equalizer. it is simple. but i always keep mine on heavy, i can hear things crystal clear.

if you are looking for a cd player in a price range of $180-200, this is the best of the best. if you want somewhere $100-150 ones, check out the iriver ones. that is the one i had before this one. it was around $130 worked great but just didn't like some picky features. btw cd players are superb compared to md or mp3 players, first off a software like this can hold up to 490 songs on a disc, most people don't even need that many songs, but if you do, simple, burn another cd. now 2 cd= memory of a typical ipod. and to tell you, the equalizer and the bass on this thing is incredible. im more of abass p[erson, and the equalizer makes the bass just perfect for me. this is about as light as an mp3 player but not as small. if you get this cd player, you'll realize when you put it in your pocket, it feels like you just put a cd in your pocket. it's that light!!. with the metallic body, it is well buiilt. especially with the 1 year warranty. i recommend this to EVERYONE
