Summary: Great Specifications but skips
Review: For the price, this unit has excellent specifications!
Handles multi-session CD's, CDRW filesystem etc. The spinup time was fast on an MP3 CD with 120 songs. ID3 tag support is good etc.

However, a standard audio CDR disk would not play properly in the car. Player was horizontal on the passenger seat under freeway driving conditions. When ESP was disabled, the player was clearly skipping all the time and could not buffer any data. Back at home, I had trouble with the same disk on a stationary desk! Other disks also gave trouble to (different CDR brands were tried)

Exchanged unit as I couldn't believe that it could be this bad. Same audio CDR disk played 100% in this replacement unit. I thought that the problem was solved until my wife took the unit walking in the park. The disk would simply not play after a few seconds!

Tried the disk at home and everything worked. With a bit of experimentation, the discovery was made that the disk would not play when the unit was vertical (turning ESP off is a great aid in seeing when the unit has trouble). Rotated the unit 180 degrees (still vertical) and the disk would play properly - essentially in the "upside" down position. Note that the unit was held stationary during this experiment.

My conclusion is that the memorex has quality issues with the drive mechanism itself. The ESP technology is not going to help unless there is some data to buffer in the first place. The orientation of the unit is important. I expect that some units are better than others (at least this was my experience with two units)

This unit gets an average rating due to the skip problems. For someone who listens to music at a desk, car and perhaps even a bus/train will find this player excellent value (make sure you can exchange the unit if you are unlucky with the first one).

For walking, cycling or other more demanding activities, save your money for a better unit (Both Philips and Sony appear to have good comments for anti-skip technology). Or choose a solid state MP3 player.

I'm returning the memorex for a Philips EXP30317 player. I've only seen good comments on it's anti-skip technology (no skipping when snowboarding - this I have to see!). A pity that I will have to loose the ID3 capabability - but reliability is more important to me for the extra dollars.

Summary: Despite the included car kit, it's a lousy car player
Review: I got this primarily for use in my car. Problems I've found are numerous. Most in-dash car cd players resume playing actually where they left off when the car's ignition has been shut off and restarted. This unit automatically starts playing track 1 when powered on. With 11 or so hours of music crammed on the CD, I ownly end up hearing the first tracks.

The volume controls are awkwardly positioned on the side, when all the other buttons are on the top. Addtionally, this unit is not flash-upgradable and doesn't come with a belt clip for jogging, etc. I'm disappointed.

Summary: I give it 3 stars for the skipping
Review: Hi

I jog and it skips crazy while playing a Mp3. If you are active I suggest getting a different player but if you plan to use it while in a vehicle this would be great for you!

Summary: Works Great
Review: I'm not sure what people are saying about it skipping. It never does. I just got it a couple of days ago and it works great. I burn on a CD-RW my MP3 files ( I have 136 on the cd)and I still have half the cd empty. It reads directories meaning you can put your files into different folders according to artists/mood/genre etc and it says the song name. The headphones are also not the usual crappy ones you get with regular cd players but they don't blow me away. It also comes with a car kit. I highly recommend it.

Summary: it works well - - for about 20 minutes
Review: this player has very little battery life. I put in new batteries and 20 minutes later it tells me it's low on batteries. It has a nice display, but that is about it's only good feature. It also tends to skip.

Review: Good value for money. I bought it ...on sale ... with the car kit. It works well on CD-RW, but performs poorly on CD-R.

Summary: It skips....
Review: I bought this player after returning the 8505 model...it is a little better...bigger screen, better headphone etc.. but IT STILL SKIPS LIKE CRAZY.....save your money and buy a better one!

Summary: Best of Both Worlds
Review: I have owned the Memorex MPD8507CP for a few weeks and I love it. It is so full featured that I am still learning new things about it. It gives me great flexibility of being able to search for files, scan intros and supports multiple directories. With its line and phone outputs I can listen to it at home, work or in the car. I chose it over a memory card unit so i can swap mp3 cds with my friends. If you have the ability to burn mp3 cds this is the unit for you. You can burn a cd for every mood imaginable and then just pop it into the player whenever and wherever you are. Dollar for dollar you won't find a better deal on such a full featured cd/mp3 player.

Summary: Lasted 2.5 years of hard use!
Review: I'm so sad that this just died! I used it continuously for 2.5 years, and it never let me down. I dropped it a number of times, and it kept right on working. It was well worth the price and I hope I can find another one!

Review: beware, you get what you pay for...

if you simply want a cd player that plays mp3 cd's and dont care about quality or features, get this.
there are many problems with this, though.
1. resume function does not work, it will only work if you dont turn the cd player off, which is stupid
because it automatically turns off after 60 secs. even then, it doesnt resume where you left off in the
song, only at the song
2. buttons to skip tracks are backwards
3. volume control is made of 2 buttons, not a wheel, so it can be hard to push up when you want to go up
4. random function is not random. the first time you put in a cd, its random, but if you put in the same cd again, it plays the same tracks in the same order
5. music quality is ok, but not great
6. skips about once every 5 minutes even while resting on a table, and about once a minute while walking
7. randomly stops playing a song while walking
8. search function only searches the name of the beginning of songs, doesnt look through the whole filename
9. no backlight
10. if song doesnt have an ID3 tag, it will display "title : unknown author : unknown" instead of just displaying the filename, which would have made a whole lot more sense.
11. bulky and heavy
12. while playing a song above the manufacturers recommended 128kpbs, the elapsed time shown is not accurate

in conclusion, this is a no name piece of ..., and if you are really into listening to mp3 cds, buy something else. Im on my way to go return this hunk of junk right now....
