Summary: Sometimes too much is not enough!
Review: I am a veteran user of Personal Finance software...having started using Managing Your Money nearly 15 years ago with the purchase of my first (20 meg hard drive) 286 computer. MYM served me well until both the system became outdated and I 'switched' through my bank to Quicken. What was a tremendous idea and approach 15 years ago now has evolved into layers and layers of complexity. While Quicken can be used for simple checkbook tracking and reconciliation, the menu-laden program seems much more difficult to use. I have now created a much simpler version within Excel which serves my simple purposes most simplistically. Quicken should offer a $9.95 feature-free checkbook version.

Summary: I thought it was just me!!
Review: After reading through the reviews for Quicken 2002, I was surprised about the number of reported problems, not only with this version, but also 2001 and 2000.

I have been a long-time Quicken user, currently on version 2000 and considering upgrading to 2002. However, I have also had extensive problems getting my 2000 version to handle the interface with online brokerage accounts from TD Waterhouse, Fidelity, and Morgan Stanley. Some data updates, and some doesn't. On-line account histories download from one brokerage, but others are only partially downloaded. The bottom line, I can't trust the data reported in Quicken.

The checking account feature has always been fine, but using more advanced features is problematic. After considering the options and input from others, I'll stick with Quicken Deluxe 2000 - at least I know the problems I have without generating new ones.

I don't know if Intuit monitors these reviews, but perhaps we can hope they do; and, work on a comprehensive product update in underway.

Summary: New users encouraged, upgrade not worth it
Review: For anyone who is thinking about purchasing a personal money management program for the first time, or switching from another application, I highly recommend Quicken. I have used it for many years and I have installed each upgrade faithfully. I am a devotee of the product and can't imagine how I managed my money before I started using it.

While I don't regret the upgrade from 2001 to 2002 (I had none of the upgrade problems that other users have had), it provided no added benefits that made it worth the cost of the upgrade. That combined with the many problems people have had upgrading make this an upgrade to skip in my opinion.

My rating above reflects the overall rating of the product itself, not the upgrade. If you don't have a version earlier than 2000 (or if you've never used Quicken), I wouldn't hesitate to purchase 2002. Otherwise, wait until next year.

Summary: Buggy under Windows XP
Review: I echo the comment that this is a buggy version (running on Windows XP).

With a DSL connection, I have Quicken crash 50% of the time when I download quotes/new.

Summary: I love Quicken!
Review: Despite what the masses say here, I think Quicken 2002 and my previous version, 2000, are the best thing that's ever happened to my personal finances. I use Quicken for budgeting, savings goals, online payments, online billing, and for management of several credit card accounts and several bank accounts. Budgeting is made really easy by using the built-in categories and categories I've created. I can even split a transaction between multiple categories. I've had no problems with the product and can't help but wonder if some of the negative reviews posted here are from within Microsoft. They have been known to do such things.

Summary: VERY BUGGY! Don't waste your money
Review: The last 3 versions of Quicken have been very buggy. This one is no different. I would not recommend buying Quicken until they show some interest in quality. Considering the poor quality of the software, it is very disappointing that they offer no technical support.
The biggest problem I have is that it won't print. All my other Windows applications print fine. I have also found arithmatic errors, and it crashes often under Windows ME (this problem has been fixed by upgrading to Windows XP.)

Summary: More problems with Quicken 2002
Review: I echo others that have had problems with Quicken 2002. I recently tried to upgrade from 2000 and like others have had problems with the data files being corrupted. Technical support has been no help. It seems that this is a common problem. The program will loose data or corrupt it and then you are lost. The only advice given by technical support is to start over and re-enter each account one at a time. This takes hours and hours. I did this and the program still has glitches. Intuit needs to do a better job of converting the files and making sure all past data can be transported from one version to another. Unlike others, running supervalidate or validate does not correct the problems. Data when recreating the main accounts is not available, such as what was in any retirement planning previously created or data in a home loan that might have been tied to certain accounts. If I had it to do over I would have stayed with Quicken 2000.

Summary: Would like to see bugs fixed and better memory conservation
Review: I have been a loyal Quicken upgrader for years, and I find myself frustrated with every upgrade. First of all, they don't give you much of a deal on upgrades for being a loyal customer. Check out MS Money 2002 Deluxe. (...)

Missing features: Does not handle exchange-traded options at all. Only handles employee stock options in a rudimentary way. Help files are terribly incomplete with some "features" not documented at all. Unlike almost every other Windows program, in Quicken you can only look at one window at a time, so it is very difficult to compare one register to another. Unfortunately, the program consumes memory as though every window in the Quick Tabs section is open, but the program doesn't update them until you click on them. The program is slow, slow, slow even on a fast machine, and it gets worse as the data files get larger. The reports and graphs section is so inflexible as to be almost comical. There is no "Undo" command, and once you've entered something, it is automatically saved and becomes a permanent part of your file. In other words, you can't even "quit without saving" as an "Undo" command. Feel free to put in all of the feature requests you want to at the Quicken tech support web site, but they will ignore them all.

Bugs: This company has no concept of testing before shipping a product. The program can corrupt your data in such a way that the Validate and Super Validate functions can't catch it - much less correct it. When you finally do discover it, you can't restore just a piece from back up - it's all or nothing. I back up after every session, but even so, in my case, this meant a choice between re-entering weeks of data or just living with the missing (corrupted) data. Tech support, if you can call it that, is of very little use, and they are expensive. The program arbitrarily fails to download your data over the Internet for days at a time, but tech support has no clue how to fix it. The program quietly does automatic program updates which change the way certain parts work, so now my scroll button only works in about half of the windows where it used to work, and the Enter key now functions ever so slightly differently when entering data. Sometimes the program just crashes right in the middle of an operation. Did it complete what I was doing? Did it go back to the last fully completed operation? Did it corrupt some portion of my data file that I won't notice for weeks? There is no way to know. Feel free to put in all of the bug fix requests you want to at the Quicken tech support web site, but they will ignore them all - upgrade after upgrade.

This program is probably fine if you just use it to track your checkbook and follow some simple investments.

Summary: Buyer Beware!
Review: I made the mistake of upgrading from Quicken 98 to Quicken 2002 Deluxe. The financial planner does not work correctly (it worked great in 98). The tax forcaster doesn't use current data. My data files went from 260k to 2.5mb so backing up online is not as convenient. And there are lots of Quicken ads that pop up as alerts reminding you of all the other ways you can spend money on Quicken products. Don' upgrade!!!

Summary: Great product for new users, but not worth the upgrade
Review: I give the upgrade from 2001 to 2002 0 stars (hmm, negative stars would be justified IMHO). But, since the product is still the best home finance software I give it 5 stars too. ;-) So, I guess that means I have to give it 3 stars overall.

If you are a new user or haven't upgraded since 1999, then this is for you. But, if you have 2001, save the money and skip this upgrade. I've been using quicken for about 8 years now and have upgraded every time a new version came out. This was the first time I used the 30 day refund guarantee. There are little to no added features (that I use anyway) that greatly distinguish this from the 2001 version. Yes, there are some new thing, but not significant enough to warrant the upgrade from 2001. There are even some things I used almost every time I use Quicken that are no longer there or have been modified for the worse.

So, in summary, new users or users of quicken 1999 or earlier... buy this for your home finance software... it is the BEST. Users using 2000 or 2001, skip it.
