Summary: Adequate but not as good as old TurboTax
Review: I had used TurboTax for many years. I was about to order it here and then read the reviews. Instead I bought TaxCut. I'm glad I did because I think it's important to "send a message" to companies that consumers will not stand for the kinds of things TurboTax practiced this year. I'm also glad because TaxCut was adequate.

But I do concur with others that it's not as good as the old TurboTax. There are numerous ways (which I don't have time to detail) that it was awkward. I was able to file electronically but it was very easy to miss the choice to file without any mail-in form. I missed it and couldn't go back to change it.

To file electronically one cannot make any changes manually. If you feel you need to make a change to a particular entry on a tax form, you have to determine what part of the interview led to the figure on a particular tax form. If you go to the tax form itself, there is no way to click on the figure you gave and be taken back to the original question. (I seem to remember that TurboTax did have this feature.) I spent quite a bit of time trying to work around this and still qualify for electronic filing.

I hope TaxCut either improves or TurboTax abandons its malicious ways.

Summary: Very un-professional
Review: I switched to TaxCut this year for the usual reasons, and so far am very unimpressed after trying to get started after just one day. Here's why:

1. The update is over 14MB that needs to be downloaded.
2. The auto-update locked up when I tried to run it twice.
3. The non-auto update file locked up during installation the first time I ran it.
4. TaxCut Deluxe keeps giving errors trying to import my TurboTax file. It took me 20 minutes to get the TaxCut customer support guy to understand the issue. He was very insulting, kept interrupting and kept trying to give me advice that did not apply. FINALLY he asked a supervisor and gave me a very non-detailed suggestion involving going back into TurboTax and re-saving the file after hitting radio button 1 (which he couldn't tell me anything else about except that it is radio button 1!).
5. (minor) The program makes me save my tax info before doing anything even though I haven't put a single thing into it yet.
6. They would not give me tech support without giving them all sorts of personal information (they even asked for my internet provider!).
7. According to tech support, you have to turn off virus checking software to install or use TaxCut.

All in all, very unprofessional, poorly designed, lousy tech support, and after just one day trying to get started I'm really annoyed.

Summary: much better for you and your computer!
Review: I have been using turbo tax since their inception. Shame on them for including c-dilla on this year's edition. I just finished my taxes using tax cut. It is definitely the way to go! Again, shame on intuit!

Summary: Happy with H&R Tax Program
Review: After many years using TurboTax (Intuit) I used H&R's TaxCut this year and found it every bit as good (and with less commercials).

Why switch? Well, Intuit got greedy and wanted to install spyware on my PC to make sure I'm the only one that uses the software copy. While I understand their concern (same for all software developers), the approach was heavy handed and caused additional problems for the majority of honest users.

Summary: Jumping from the frying pan into the fire
Review: I have been a TurboTax user for years (and always liked it) but didn't but it this year due to the registration problems. I tried the switch and will never EVER use TaxCut again. With a cable modem, firewall, and antivirus software, I am completely unable to find a way to efile despite following any (useless and difficult to obtain) advice from TaxCut. Moreover, I took my file to another person's house with a dial-up and was still unable to e-file.
If this wasn't enough, the program is inferior in just about every regard to Turbotax unless you are filing a very uncomplicated form. If you have your own business, do taxes for an elderly sick relative, or have any complicated issues (or if you want to e-file), avoid this software even if they give it to you for free.

Summary: tax cut works for me
Review: I'll never use Quicken again based on their lastest 'activation methods. That includes Quicken as well as their tax sofware, even if its free.

Summary: Wont import my TurboTax file from last year
Review: The prodcut says it will import TurboTax data from last year. However the product fails to import and Tech Support tells me my file is too large (100k). They say the only way to import is to open the file in last years TurboTax (I threw away) and reduce the file size and then import.
Both TurboTax and TaxCut get failing grades this year. They both should be ashamed of themselves.

Summary: Taxcut Deluxe works just fine
Review: OK I'm another long-time (6 years) TurboTax user that switched to Taxcut. I finished filing my returns yesterday. After reading the reviews for both TurboTax and Taxcut, I almost did my taxes by hand. As it turns out, for me at least, some of the more the ominous Taxcut feedback (the ones with single stars) was mostly hype.

My return is moderately complex, with regular and passive income, capital gains, itemized deductions, carryover losses etc. At the end of the day, Taxcut handled it all fine. Here are some positives that address some of the negative feedback:
1. Imported last year's TurboTax data perfectly. There was one minor glitch in interpreting it, which I'll explain below.
2. Performed two online updates via dialup, one via LAN, they all worked fine
3. Properly handled the carryover loss, which had to be treated differently for Fed and State
4. Interview worked fine - never ran into a question like "please fill in form X"
5. Navigation through fields worked fine with the Tab key and arrows
6. E-filing worked great. Yeah the return got rejected a couple of times because Taxcut didn't ask me to fill in fields that the IRS and FTB wanted, but the error status pointed me right to the problems and I fixed them easily, and re-filed. Never crashed, no "socket warnings", etc. I e-filed via dialup.

The only thing I can think of that might make a difference is alot of people seem to be using the XP OS. I'm using Win 98, and Win 2000. Maybe Taxcut has issues with XP.

Taxcut did what TurboTax made harder this year - I completed the return on my home PC and loaded Taxcut on my work PC only to print it out.

Here are a couple of negatives:
1. The program crashed about 5 or 6 times while completing my return, mostly when I was bouncing around between different sections. While annoying, I never lost data, in fact Taxcut seems to retain data even if you don't save the file manually.
2. When you e-file, you use your last year's AGI as an electronic signature. Taxcut pulled the wrong figure (gross income vs. AGI) from my TurboTax data. I was able to override the field and it worked fine. My return was still rejected because my spouse's AGI didn't match, even though I filed MFJ last year! Taxcut doesn't allow you to specify spouse's AGI in that case, so I had to fake it out and go through as though it was filed separately, override the spouse AGI, and then go back and change the filing status. For some reason, even though the status is MFJ, Taxcut provides a spouse AGI and the IRS checks it. Minor annoyance.

Overall I like Taxcut and would use it again. I also liked TurboTax alot. Not sure what I'm going to do next year. Either program beats doing taxes by hand by a mile.

Summary: Useless Customer Support
Review: ~~~The tech support was useless. I called four times without my problems being solved. All four representatives that I talked with seemed not familiar with the product at all. Moreover, the tech support is not provided through a toll-free number. When I sent my questions through e-mail, the feedback that I got was just to uninstall and reinstall the application. It was not even for my specific questions.

Furthermore, the software was not user-friendly when I intended to revise~~~~ information that I had inputted previously. Sometimes the system failed to reflect the changes that I had made.~~~
