Summary: Classics from Maxis - give 'em a chance!
Review: Nobody laughed at me when I became obsessed with SimCity in college (wow, that was almost 10 years ago!). They did sneer when I bought SimFarm... and laughed when I became obsessed with it, too. While it does seem a little odd to sit down at a computer and play a simulated *farming* game, it really is enjoyable, and I play it even now!

Here are some basics:

SimCity - this is the classic game, here. Graphics are very basic, not much detailed interaction. If you're looking for micromanagement, go for SimCity 3000 (Unlimited) or the Sims... this is, however, much easier on the hard drive and memory, and it's a good introduction to the world of Simulation games. The grand-daddy of all Sim Games... if you can't get enough of the current crop, at least pay homage to their origins. :)

SimFarm - another classic game, it puts you as the head of, yes, a farm. I know, I know... farming is hard work, why would anyone want to PRETEND to farm!? For the challenge! You have the responsibility to plow your fields, plant them with whatever crop will grow best in your area, take care of them, fertilize, fumigate, etc. If you do well and make money, you'll get house upgrades, equipment upgrades, and you'll get to compete at the local fair! It sounds corny, I know, but I get a great feeling from watching my tiny little sheep, cows, and horses grow up, make their own babies, and then go on to bigger and better things (ha!) after I sell them for a very tidy profit. I love going to the disaster screen and sending my farm a massive cold front, and then reaping the benefits of planting my fields with cold-friendly strawberries. You can even tinker with the futures market - will those frozen berries sell for a better price 2 weeks down the road? Or will the price fall and leave you with only lint in your pockets?

These games are pretty hard to find these days. Buy them here and give 'em a chance. They're pretty cheap, and they won't take up much room on your hard drive. The only thing to worry about is the possibility that your friends will laugh at you for spending an hour or two sitting at your desk *farming*.
