Summary: Here are the facts.. and a bit of opinion!
Review: Asheron's Call *IS* a massivley multiplayer game that will suck you in and keep you in! It is the BEST(or worst) enemy of resposibility ever invented. But, as with everything, there are pluses and minuses.

My system recommendations: Windows 95/98 3D graphics accelerator (I use ATI RagePro) Run a Pentium II at 333 mhz or better with at least 96 MB of RAM. Connect at 56k via modem, or go with DSL or cable, otherwise, you'll pay the price! I also recommend a nice sound card. (The game comes with Direct X 6.1.)

Visuals: The developers at Turbine paid attention to the details... at the expense of your system. The 3-D graphics and texturing are fantastic, but you must have a 3D graphics accelerator to enjoy them.

Ambience: No annoyingly repetative soundtrack here! Unlike other games, there is no background music. A wise decision by MS/Turbine. There is no MUZAK running 24 hours a day where I live... and I like it that way. The sounds that you do hear are birds chirping, bees buzzing, and monsters coming at you! With a good sound card and 3D speakers or headphones, you can tell where a monster is before you even see it.

Playability: Laughably simple interface. Your hands do move from the keyboard to the mouse, but only when wandering around towns and talking with other players. In battle, you can use the mouse by itself or go strictly with keybaord commands. (Thank you Turbine!)

Game features include:

Constantly evolving world: The game is ALIVE. New Quests come and go, world altering events happen, new monsters appear to plague the human element.
Fully customizable characters: Well, you can't adjust hieght or wieght, but you can choose eye shape and color, hair color and length (or no hair), skin color, clothing, armor, weaponry, skills, abilities... You can have a nicely unique character.
New Monsters: No standard orcs and dragons here! Lots of different monsters with different attacks and weaknesses. You have to learn what works well on which beasties.
No Player Killing: There is a specific game "world" for player-killers. You won't get bumped off by someone who wants your armor! Helpful game staff: Have a question? Ask an Advocate! Stuck on a hillside? Ask a Sentinel! The HELP line is built into the game interface. A PLOT: Yes, there is an ever-evolving plot on Asheron's Call. In so many other online games, there is no plot. How can you have a RPG with no plot?
MASSIVELY Multiplayer: A blessing and a curse. There are lots of people who are willing to help you and answer any questions you might have. But, there are lots of people who are just waiting to trick you. AND: there are LOTS of people. If you find a nice spot to hunt, chances are you won't be alone.

I love this game. It rates so much higher than EQ or Diablo in my book. So why did I only give it 4 stars instead of 5?
1. Too many other players.
2. To enjoy the true beauty of the game, you need a top-of-the line computer.
3. Lousy pre-made character "classes". You don't have to use them, but they are a good place to start. Just don't use the template as-is. You'll hate your character.

Don't bother with those other online RPGs... Asheron's Call is the ONE.

Summary: AC Vs EQ
Review: I was trying to decide between the game Asheron's Call (AC) and EverQuest (EQ) and i chose AC, because i have played bolth of them and AC has alot better graphics and the player mode is more user friendly. The fellowship system is cool too. EQ to me seems more restricted. In AC you can totally customize your charicter. Its totally your chioce. I fell if someone had to choose between EQ and AC hands down i would choose AC.

Summary: EverQuest vs. Asheron's Call
Review: ok i have looked and played on EverQuest and Asheron's Call. I think that Asheron's Call is sooo much better. The graphics are better than EQ and the controls are much more user friendly. There is a alligence pyrimid in AC as well wich is not in EQ. I feel that if you need to choose between EQ (EverQuest) and AC(Asheron's Call) i would choose AC hands down. The feel is upbeat and lighter than EQ. It is also more challenging to use magic which i like.

Summary: this is the best game!
Review: i would give this more stars if i could but unfortunetly the limet is 5. I love the alligence system, the easy to use controls, and the cool world that really makes you think.

I also think the little mini actions you can do are cool, like *mock* and *snowflake* and *ymca*, even though they don't do anything in the game. they are funny.

This game is definetly the best rpg i have ever played, although there are a couple things that could be improved, such as the NPCs, or non-player charecters, for those of you who don't play any other RPGs. The game relies a little to much on players(not that i think this is a bad thing or that they should change it at all) but some more detail with the non-player charecters would be kind of cool. This is, however, still one of the best games i have ever played, and i have played a LOT of games.

Summary: Not an RPG
Review: Once you set aside the role-playing aspect, this is a fun game. You do not get the range of emotion you get from text-based games, nor the imersion into whatever your imgagination holds, but there is a sense of community. The allegiance system, while abused by many, is a good way to make friends, establish connections, and get involved with the back story and on-going quests. The scenery is beautiful - if you can see it, you can get there (well, to nearly every place). The critters leave much to be desiered, tho were recently re-designed and have improved. The character creation is wonderful. The options mean you won't see your twin or triplet or hundreth copy as in EQ. (EQ has better monsters, AC has better characters. Both have great scenery, tho AC's seamless travel is much preferred to "zoning".) I recommend it for what it is - a graphics, medival genre GAME. If you want more role-play and imagination, head over to Gemstone III or DragonRealms.

Summary: The most addictive game ever.
Review: Very stylish. Very engrossing. This game is a divorce in a box, I tell ya.

I recently found myself staying up and playing this game from 9PM until 7AM. Does this mean that it is a great game, or does it mean that I am insane?

I don't know the answer to that.

UPDATE:

I've changed my mind. After playing this gems for a few months, I realized that it had turned out to be nothing more than a race to get more items, complete more quests, and build a better character than the next guy.

It's not the game developers' fault, though. It's the virtual community that has come to call the game home. The place became so full of "power-gamers", that there was no place left for people who just wanted to explore, interact, and role-play. It's disappointing, because this could have been a truly GREAT game. But the players ruined it.

Summary: Great Game, Highly Addictive!
Review: This game is great! I have been playing since beta, and I've loved it since!

There are a variety of monsters to play against in the game, and if you get bored with that, PK offers another unique strategy (note: you actually have to think a bit while PKing).

A lot of quests are out there for people with a need for new interest, for people of almost all levels. Quests are also released on an almost regular basis, so limited content will never be a problem. Content will only be a problem if you power level, in which case you'll always be bored and never interested with the game. A few quests can no longer be camped either, so that won't be too much of a problem.

Allegiances are a great part of AC, allowing for incentives for helping out newbies. Even though there are no houses or insignias, this was never promised and could add a lot of problems in the future (too many houses=too many textures, less open land,etc.).

Bugs do occur in the game, but what game doesn't have bugs? Critical bugs are fixed ASAP, and other bugs are usually fixed in the next monthly patch. Bad mouthers can be squelched and reported for code of conduct violations. There is no stealing in AC either, only cons (hint: don't use the V key if someone asks you to).

Summary: Great game, great content, great monsters, great everything. What are you waiting for? Get it!

Summary: so - so
Review: This game is pretty fun when you start out as it doesn't have any of the usual monsters that most on-line RPG's do, also you can customise your character to the utmost extream, eyes, face, smile type, color and type of clothes, ect... To play the game you have to pay $9.99 a month. The graphics are very good, especially the enviroments, and actually contradictly to other people I thought the graphics on the characters were pretty good. Anyways this game has a lotta strong points over other on-line RPG's, for one, YOU CAN ACTUALLY BUY ARMOR AND WEAPONS FROM SHOPS AT A REASONABLE PRICE! Something that EQ (everquest) failed to do as it was Impossible to buy the 3000 plat bracers or whatever it was, and you ended up having to buy everything from players. What I didn't like about Asherons Call was that there was no music. The monsters wore thin, and became dislikable. Also, like on UO (ultima online), you have to have certain spell components to cast spells, I really hate that. All in All the whole reason I quit Asheron's call was not because it wasn't fun, but because I didn't wanna pay 9.99 a month for that little bit of fun.

Summary: This game is one of my all-time favorites!
Review: If you don't like crowded towns, build up enough strength tomove out to a non-starter town EXAMPLE: if you started in Rithwic, move it out to Eastham! Plus, if you want to get some items from monsters, you gotta kill them yourself! Anyway, this game is just plain AWESOME! I play it with my friends every single day, and it never wears out. Me and one of my friends are RPG buffs, and we totally LOVE the game! My other friend we play with isn't and RPG buff, (action's more his style) BUT HE PROBABLY LIKES THE GAME MORE THAN WE DO! I highly reccomend.
