Summary: The game that started it all...
Review: After a hard day at work, there's nothing more satisfying than planting your good old double barrel in an imp's belly and giving him the heave-ho. Doom was the beginning of a new era in PC games. It's graphics engine technology and style have shown up in almost all first person shooter games released since it's original debut. It's enduring legacy is due to the fact that the authors kept the game strategy simple: find the bad guys and blow them to tiny bits. No complicated keyboard/mouse movements or hard to use weapons, just lock, load, and kill or be killed!

Summary: Fails To Live Up To The Original.
Review: DOOM probably had me hooked more than any other computer game; even Starcraft, Quake 3, etc. I still remember spending quite a bit of my computer time back in grade school blasting through Episode 3 Map 3 or Episode 2 Map 7, looking for different secrets and weapons. And when I wasn't doing that, I was happily playing multiplayer DOOM over the internet or downloading different "WAD" levels off various fansites. So when I finally decided to buy DOOM II, I was overjoyed to own what was supposedly an "improved" DOOM. I got the exact opposite...

First the good. The graphics do look a bit cleaner and less pixelated than in the original DOOM. There are several new enemies at your disposal (the dreaded Arch Viles being possibly the worst, as in most annoying, to ever grace a computer game). There is a new weapon (the double-barreled shotgun). And the levels this time around are a bit larger and more complex. Sounds like an "improvement" so far (albeit, very small). So why exactly did I dislike DOOM II?

The levels, while more complex, just aren't as well designed as they were in the original. They tend to get too maze-like in parts (more so than in DOOM 1), and the enemies seem like they were just randomly placed rather than thoughtfully put into certain parts of a level the way they were in the original DOOM (one minute you would be in a quite hallway, the next - CHOMP! a Bulldog Demon just came out of nowhere). Sadly, the best level in the game was IMO a bonus level titled Wolfenstein. It was sort of a remake of E1M1 from the original Wolfenstein 3D. Nazis, castle textures, and everything. But it's buried in a slew of horribly frustrating and/or boring levels like Suburbs and Circle Of Death (Lion King parody?), or possibly the worst experience I've ever had with an FPS - The Spirit World. Considering the fact that the "improvements" are so minor, do I even need to mention the game's feeling of "Been There, Done That"?

So in brief, I'm afraid I just couldn't really get into DOOM II. ID Software foolishly opted not to release a Shareware demo for the game, which means you had to spend [money] to play it back in 1995. Disappointing, since that money would have been much better spent on games like Dark Forces or the original System Shock.

Summary: Great for its day
Review: I had tons of fun with this game in '95 and I still play it today, although I've beaten it many times. It is very predictable once you've played it a few times but the multiplayer experience is great. If you've got a slow computer and can't play Quake III or Unreal Tournament, or simply want some old fashioned fun then this is a great game for you.

Summary: This is the game to have!
Review: I remember at one time I was addicted to Doom. To me it wasn't only about how fast you can complete the levels, it was about besting your score of each level. I miss it and I hope to get the Doom 3 XP version soon after it comes out. I do agree with other reviewers the graphic for the game were outstanding for its time(came out in the mid 90's me thinks). Anyway if like a good challenge then get a hold of Doom. If you like Wolfenstein these games are on the same level and very much addictive. Good fun.

Summary: Okay
Review: Not that big of an improvement over the original. This sequel is in a 'more of the same' vein. The additions are not that big a deal: there are a few new monsters. Most are pretty cut and dry, save for the fiendish Arch-Vile (who can both ressurect fallen foes and burn you up) and the new weapon.. the Super Shotgun... is a lovely upgrade, but more detail to upgrade would have carried a long way.

However, this does not make Doom 2 a 'bad' game. Yes, it is technically 'more of the same', but in the case of the Doom series, that is really a good thing.

The original Doom's gameplay was a thrilling ride with a few bumps along the way (namely: overbearing keycard hunting) and this sequel is no different.

Summary: Old School
Review: Since I've been reviewing all of the newer blood bathes I thought I'd go back and review this one as well. Doom and Doom II are just about where it all started. Everything that came after them had to live up to a standard. You can't get more classic then this. Although graphics and gameplay have improved with all the newer games, there's nothing like going a few rounds in an old standby. May Doom live forever :)

Summary: doom 2still the best
Review: The armies of hell invades earth and you are the only hope of the human race.
Doom II picks up where Doom left off, continuing the storyline and action. New monsters, new levels and a new weapon to fight evil back to where it came from.
The only thing I don't like about Doom II is the fact that it's not divided into episodes the same way Doom was.
Other than that, a true, unique classic which should be present in any respectable gamer's collection.
