Summary: It just takes too long...
Review: The problem with this game is the same one you get with most other games like it. To make it fair for the people who invest a lot of time, they have to make leveling something that takes forever. I played it when it first came out and enjoyed it for about a month. That's a pretty long time for a game i was paying money for after i bought it. If you are looking for this type of game, try Dark Ages of Camelot, it's a better version of Everquest...basically, it has wars with other countries as well...things are handled better. The point is, this game is, nowadays, a waste of money. It was good when it came out...if you have friends to play it with...but now there are much better games out there.

Review: This game has everything... great graphics, the finest in RPG, and the realistic gameplay! I don't mean that tiny spell bounding people are real, i am just syaing that the enviroments that you wander around in are just so realistic that you will get very addicted to this game....

Summary: Collossal waste of time
Review: This game is a huge disappointment. Role Playing is non existant, it entails hours upon endless hours of boredom while you wait for mana or hitpoints to return. It will literally take you months to get to a high enough level where you can even begin to enjoy the game. The monster spawns are full of campers at all times. Do yourself a huge favor, skip this one. It is mind numbing.

Summary: THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST GAMES EVER!!!
Review: This game is truly good. If you get the expantion, ruins of Kunark, it is even better. WIth everything it has, I am truly surprised it is only ... dollars a month. If you ask me, if it was ... a month, it would still be worth it, even though I would have to give up Food every other week to do that. I mean, with 40,000 players, 1,000-1,500 on every server, you know they aren't doing much wrong.

Summary: Very addictive, but falls short in many, many areas.
Review: This game is very enticing to the virgin Online Gamer. When you first begin playing, it is a completely new experience. Interaction with NPC's (Non-Player Characters) and the idea of embarking on quests to earn reward will be like brain-candy to the average gamer, mainly because you can 'party' or 'group' with other players. And there can be well over 2000 people on at one time. And this is where the seemingly endless list of problems begin.

The game is over-populated with immature, screaming children. Being a 'newbie' on this game, considering that it is already over 2 years old, is a very defeating and painful experience. These very immature players will make your fun experience quickly deteriorate into a childish war of words, with phrases such as 'U are such a newbie', 'What a stupid newbie!' and other such remarks. Once you are able to move on to hunting new monsters, you will often find people screaming at you again. They will mark you as a 'camp stealer' or a 'KSer', which means 'Kill stealer', at which point, you may find these people harassing you and following you for weeks on end, trying to make your online experience a terrible one.

In the long run, this game is very unbalanced and unfair. The Game Masters, known as GM's, are often just as childish as the players, and will also harass you and become vengeful if you do something that irritates them. As a former player, I strongly ADVISE AGAINST the purchase of this game. If the immature behavior of more than half the other people you encounter on this game does not turn you off, then you will be hooked on the addictive, if very, very repetitive gameplay. Out of personal experience, I have a friend who has called in sick to work, cut school, and blown off opportunities to have REAL-LIFE fun with myself and our other friends. Getting bad grades in COLLEGE over a game is no excuse. This game is not worth that.

Other than gripes with the other players, the game itself gets boring rather quickly. Killing the same creatures over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again with VERY LITTLE reward, and at many times no reward at all, detract from this game. Again, I srongly ADVISE AGAINST the purchasing of this game. IF you can get past the immature players (Estimated range of more than 70% of the players are from 9-14), then you will most likely find the repetitive gameplay a turn off. However, if you do enjoy the game, try not to let it interfere with your personal life. This below-average game is not worth losing friends over.

On a personal note, I only played this game for about 7 months before realizing that it was not for me. I thought the game was rather boring after about 3 months, but it is still very addicting. The biggest draw would be creating a new character, but once you find that your rewards are coming very slowly, and other players are starting to bother you, hopefully you will do the same as I did, and be rid of this game and not look back. There are many more important thing in life, such as college and my girlfriend to care about. If you want interaction with new people, go to a party or a bar.

Summary: Here is the Honest Truth, Not Negative or Positive
Review: This game is very fun if a few things happen. You must join a guild and leech off of people to get items that you will never get unless you leech better items then you don't need the item you were after in the first place. You must make friends with people who are a higher level than you or at least a veteran who has a few alt characters and his current character is equal to yours. If you do not do both of those things then you will not enjoy the game.

This game is very addictive until you run into a wall. At certain levels you will have an insanely hard time leveling up. Also no matter what you race or class you play as, you will be kos(killed on sight) to someone. The fact that a level 40-50 NPC can run up to a much weaker PC and kill him is very disturbing. On the game, I played a very hated class called a Shadow Knight. Everywhere I go, guards, good guys, and people with no lives hunt me down. Keep in mind I am level 20 while they are level 40-50. This fact alone makes travelling through some zones impossible.

The classes are horribly unbalanced. Any suggestions or petitions are completely ignored. The game become very frustrating and it will make you lose sleep and time with your friends. Since you can use magic and you never have to worry about permanently dying; the EQ world becomes better than your reality. You get sick of real life and you never want to be a part of it.

I would say this game sucks but I do like it and I am addicted to it. Don't buy it unless you have no social life already or you won't when you get done with it.

Summary: Addictive Experience
Review: This game rocks!

It's been out for two years now, and it's still adding players. The fact that Verant has to keep bringing new servers online to handle the load is an indication of the game's popularity and its continued robustness. The company is very committed to providing new features and functions to EQ, and has released two expansions (Kunark and Velious), with a third (Luclin) on its way shortly.

The setting is a medieval fantasy world, complete with the usual halfling, elves, dwarves, gnomes, and so on. Some races (dark elves, trolls, and ogres) are evil; the rest are not. Each race has its own attributes and drawbacks and advantages. For instance, the evil races are KOS (killed on sight) by good NPCs in most cities, and vice versa for the do-gooders when they go bumbling into dens of darkness. Some races are stronger than others, some are smarter or wiser or more charismatic. Some have nifty abilities like infravision or regeneration. Of course, some have annoying traits that balance out the good points--trolls and ogres, for example, have an irritating tendency to get stuck in doorways and tunnels in dungeons because they're so big (7 to 10 feet tall).

The game world is filled with numerous zones that are geared for a specific range of levels. Each race has its own starting point, and the zone right outside of each home city is typically a "newbie" zone, filled with trash monsters like rats and snakes and bats. These low-level monsters are the prey for the neophyte adventurer. As a PC accrues experience, he or she can venture out to tougher zones with higher-level monsters. Many of these are wilderness areas, but a good number are dungeons. The dungeons are usually quite terrifying, because the monsters are generally tougher and they won't hesitate to round up some of their buddies to join the fray. Also, because there's only one way out, a PC fleeing a battle can easily get lost while searching for the exit.

The world is also filled with NPCs, most of them merchants to whom PCs can sell loot and from whom they can buy gear. Many NPCs are in the cities, but a lot are in "gypsy camps" in the wilderness zones, making it easier for adventurers to dump those loads of scavenged swords and shields. Not all NPCs are friendly to every race, though! Several will attack races or classes of which they disapprove, and others will start talking smack. ("Yeah, I've got something for you, you dirty troll: the exit! Use it!")

There are several key points to keep in mind about EQ:

1) Except on specific servers, PCs cannot slaughter other PCs unless both parties agree to duel. This prevents high-level idiots from hanging about PC spawn points and killing newbies as soon as they materialize.

2) This is a social game by design, so most PCs will have to spend considerable portions of their playing time as part of a group of up to six players. If you hate cooperating with other people, then you may be in trouble. It's possible to go solo the whole way, but you'd almost certainly have to play a druid or necromancer. Even with these classes, it takes time and dedication to advance. Also, if you only play for a few hours a week, or you don't have friends, just getting into a group can be hard. Not all of the time, but there will be cases where you stand around in a zone for half an hour, shouting "Looking for group!"

3) You need to play a lot. For a good session, you should count on being logged in for at least two hours, and that's the bare minimum. Four or five would be better. Of course, when most people first start playing, they go for eight to twelve hours at a stretch, and call in a few bogus sick days to the office. It's been my experience that if you just play this game casually, it's great up through your PC's 20th level or so, but after that, it can get frustrating. The more hardcore people play so much that they have all of the cool items, while you're lucky to have a wooden stick.

4) You might want to consider getting into a guild. This will help later on when you get into the 40s and above (the current level cap is 60). Some zones are so ultra-tough that it takes entires guilds to crack them (30 or 40 players bumrushing the monster at one time, with hideous casualties).

5) The actual quests are okay, but not all that necessary. If you're lazy, just rack up platinum pieces and then buy the armor and weapons you need.

6) Actual role-playing is quite difficult, because the NPCs remain static (you kill Guard Bob, if that's your kinda gig, and he's back again in 5 minutes) and because sooner or later everyone has the same Wand of Omnithrax, but mostly because too many kewl doodz will spoil it for you.

Sony/Verant has done a good job creating and maintaining this game. They execute one or two patches each week to fix bugs, add items and spells, tweak monsters, and change class attributes. There is continual fine-tuning going on, although admittedly this is the subject of lots of rancorous debate.

There are many sites to which you can go to find additional information, including ones that are specific to classes, races, servers, guilds, and even specific PCs. You should hit some of these if you're stumped on how to complete a quest, or what zone would be appropriate for your new level, or what spells you should use. Just avoid the forums for the most part, because they're quite often full of complaints like "I've been paying $10 a month for two years and playing 40 hours a week and this game sucks". Most of the discussions just bring you down, so ignore them.

A great game, very addictive, loads of fun for a paltry ongoing price, and lots of upgrades and changes. Very definitely worth the investment.

Review: Well pretty much all has been said by the people above me. Minus a few things.
1. Being a new player doesn't have to be hard simply go to any of the online links that are at the everquest main page.
2. If someone hassles you it's really simple you put them in ignore and go on haveing your fun. It's a huge world and they can't follow you everywhere.
3. If you have children, husband, responsibilities then do what I do. Deal with them and when you have time play the game.
4. Lets see.. out of all the things you could be addicted too, at least this doesn't cost that much (money wise) or give you a hang over, it has yet to kill anyone in real life that we know of, and if this little game cause a divorce or two I can tell you there was problems to begin with.
5. It will improve your typeing speed if you expect to talk to other people. Will improve your spelling, (there are some real grammar sticklers in the game)
6. If your like me I've met in real life some great people thru the game.
I have been playing over a year and still love it.
If your buying this game for the first time, wow your in for a treat, they aren't kidding when they say you are in thier world now. It's amazeing..
