Summary: THE MOTHER OF ALL HOCKEY GAMES
Review: My list confirms why this is the mother of all hockey games:1. Defensemen will clear any pinhead not wearing the same sweater creeping around the goalmouth. They'll either lay a shoulder on you or viciously cross-check you so that you're sprawled out on the ice. 2. Referees swallow their whistles as the third period winds down. Unless, of course, you get a bit too chippy with your elbows, especially away from the puck, then into the box you go! If you love pummeling the puck-handler, you'll often find yourself short-handed. Which brings me to... 3. Penalty killing is a necessary skill. You can't bomb down the ice with the puck while short-handed since the game forces you to kill off the infractions. If you do have room to skate, you'll be hesitant to carry it past the red line. Dump it and hustle back to the defensive zone, otherwise, you're stuck in no-man's land. 4. The dump-and-chase works remarkably well. In fact, once a goalie misplayed a puck that was dumped into a corner, the left wing beat him to the puck, passed it off to a pinching defenseman...GOAL! 5. The goalie makes spectacular sliding pad saves, fabulous kick saves, and has the best glove save outside of the Air Canada Centre. If the goalie's shoulders are squared to the shooter, he'll make a save EVERY time. Therefore, crash the net, set up one-timers, or deflect the puck shot from the blue line to score. Rarely, if you keep slapping away at the goalie as he attempts to smother the puck, you'll get a cheap goal (chances are you'll be on your back thanks to a protective defenseman). 6. The most effective way of stifling an odd-man situation is to hook one of them. This slows him down enough to disrupt the scoring chance, and, just like in the NHL, it never gets called! 7. Turn off the music and the commentators to enjoy the sounds of the game: the fans, the skating, the sticks, the boards, the pipe, and the players absorbing punishment and getting rattled off of the glass. Do yourself a favor and wear headphones, it's like you have $100 seats. By the way, ALWAYS be the home team since the crowd reacts to your play, and there's nothing better than scoring a goal and hearing the fans go nuts. 8. The devil is in the details. You can neutralize opposing players while mucking for the puck. If you wait long enough, you can force a defenseman down in an attempt to block the shot, then skate around him for a better scoring chance. Tick-tack passing will keep defenses on its heels. A goal was once scored by ricocheting the puck off of the unsuspecting goalie's skate. My wish list: 1. A goal lamp would've been a nice touch. 2. Defensemen able to clutch players (hold too long and get whistled). 3. Broken stick if slap-shot button held too long. If you want fluff, get the other hockey games. If you want to play virtual hockey, get this one.

Review: When I bought this game last December I wasn't sure I'd have fun playing it. I had already owned EA's Nhl 2000 for a few months and I was having doubts whether Fox could measure up. Thats until I got it home and put it on my computer. I found it to have more realistic scoring, more practical player customization, and a cool rivalry mode. As gameplay goes it more than matches EA Nhl 2000 by making it harder to make the great plays. I was never finding myself saying "Boy I made that look easy!" The game didn't allow for beginners luck so I had to learn how beat other teams. Overall it's a much more challenging game in a sense that it doesn't babysit you. Graphics are average, but what it lacks in appearance it more than makes up for in sophistication.

As well as all 28 teams, you get World tournament mode, which is a tournament you can play with several countries. I admit that it is quite tough to beat the computer, ESPECIALLY if you put the computer level on all-star. Overall this product was definitely worth the money.

As well as all 28 teams, you get World tournament mode, which is a tournament you can play with several countries. I admit that it is quite tough to beat the computer, ESPECIALLY if you put the computer level on all-star. Overall this product was definitely worth the money.
