Summary: Not your ordinary shooter...
Review: I've been at this game for a little while now. At the beginning, it was somewhat of a disappointment, as I was expecting to be able to blow everybody up with large guns. But larger guns do not appear until higher levels, and ammo is, indeed, very scarce. So, what you do is you avoid people shooting at you, try to get close enough to disarm them and then kick their butts with your bare hands. Now, that's where the game truly becomes fun. The melee combat is where it's at. You learn new moves every so often, and some of them are cooooool. This takes a lot more skill and practice and is a whole lot more fun than pointing a large gun at some distant enemy and blowing their guts out (ok... maybe not more fun to see, but definitely more fun to do). Myself, I just love the devil spin kick.

The graphics are relatively minimalistic, but well done. I think that the barren scenery works well and focuses you on combat rather than pretty things on the walls...

The keyboard controls are very well laid out and uncomplicated. Controlling movement and angle with the mouse, however, can become a little difficult when you are surrounded by more than two opponents and you need to move around very quickly. But, hey, what's the point of an easy game :) ?

I recommend this game very highly. It's provided hours of good (pseudo-physical) fun...

Summary: Very GOOD... but hard, with bad save and control features...
Review: This game is detailed in the fighting department, even though it is a fighter/shooter hybrid! The number of offensive/defensive moves that you can do with a keyboard in incredible.

But there is the catch: the keyboard! I can't find a way to use my Wingman game pad controller.

You move forward/backward and strafe left/right (and perform jump/punch/kick) with your keyboard; you turn/change your line of sight/aim with the mouse. And there is no auto-aiming... It is a good thing that your guns comes with a aiming sight (laser-like) to let you know where you are aiming but... Frankly, I was more expecting an all-on-a-game pad control scheme, especially if this game is also done on Playstation.

You can't even change what keys on the keyboards you may use. Everything is frozen!! ... Well that's not entirely true. You may change the settings by editing a file called "key_config.txt". But I am all confused as to why they (the designer) never installed a control configuration option screen!

The saving-scheme is "sub-episode" based. Your game is saved once you have reached a certain point in the game. You can't save anywhere and there are no save-points. And the saves are pretty far apart! <grumble> I still ache from repeating a segment of the game over, and over, and over, and over...

Aside from this the game is (still!) very good (thus the 4 stars out of 5). The fighting is extremely hectic, but rewarding once you master the control scheme. Rejoice on taking down plenty of enemies

The graphics are very good, without being overly detailed. This lack of detail is good for a few reasons: a) this is a anime-environment game (anime is a term used for Japanese animation style); b) with so much action, any more details would slow down the game on any computer! The faces on the characters are static when they talk, but I personally don't put much emphasis on that for this type of game. The music is great (I even got the ONI soundtrack). And the voice-overs are... well... overacted. But hey! This is anime! It's supposed to be like that!

This is a very satisfying game that does it with plenty of action and style. But the two keywords of warning should be: hard control scheme, bad save feature. As always, I recommend you download the demo from the designer's website (...) to try out the controls. If you can handle it, go for it and buy the game.

NOTE: Although I use the term "anime" quite often, all designers of this game are American-based. This is not a game ported from Japan. It is (heavily) inspired by anime.

Summary: Oni Is The Best 3rd Person Action Game I've Ever Played!!!
Review: Oni is the best game I've seen in awhile! The blend of martial arts fighting and weapons fighting is the best I've ever seen. The anime touch to it makes it even better, especially for the anime fans. The fighting moves are simple to use and learn. The story isn't all too complex, but hey, it's a video game, not a novel! The only thing I don't like about this game is that it doesn't allow you to save it when you want. It only saves once you get to a certain place in the level. However, it does give the game a certain level of fun difficulty to it. This game definately deserves and commands for several sequels after it, with room for more and better moves/improvements! Buy this game! You won't be disappointed! Trust me!!!

Summary: A new type of game
Review: I have played this game alot and i must say that it has something you very rarely see anymore, originality. I have never played a game like it, and while its not perfectly done, its done well enough that i once played for over 4 hours without looking at the clock. The game is dificult, but that is also part of what i enjoy, its hard enough that you almost never beat a level your first time through, but not so hard that i ever was discouraged (also, there is a way to turn the dificulty up and down, it makes a noticeable difference!) The fighting in the game is increadible, your able to preform Tekken like attacks and combos to multiple enemies while at the same time takeing them down with any of the bizzare (but very cool) weapons that you find. I agree that the saveing system is a little annoying sometimes, but i feel it doesnt impinge on the game enough to make me dislike it. If you like anime, action games, high end martial arts, and great graphics, this game is for you.

Summary: What are they thinking?
Review: Just played this game at a friends. I'm glad I didn't buy it like I was going to. The premise of the game is good, and I like the animation and graphics, however this game features the worst controls ever. To move your character you use one set of controls forward and back, and you use left and right for orientation. There is no side to side,or Strafing, movement. Aiming weapons is done with the mouse and is all but impossible to do. So if your looking for an easily controlled adventure game this is not it. Hopefully the control setup for the PS2 version of this game will be much better.

Summary: Great once you get use to the controles
Review: This is really a fun game to play. the graphics are pretty good, the physics are nice, and it is a total blast to play. The only thing I didn't like was the controles however once I got use to them I found out the the controles are layed out very well for the style of game this is. At first you'll be frusterated with using the left analog stick to move forward and back and strafting from side to side, and the right stick to turn and look up and down wile the L and R bottons are used to punch kick jump and crawl, but in no time you'll be dodging enamy fire wile you jump kick his buddy in the head with eas. All in all I'd recomend this to any one who is a fan of videogames and anime videos.

Summary: Cool game, but tough to learn
Review: I've played a LOT of games, but this one is complicated to learn all the features and commands in order to execute smoothly. The game also lacks some better graphics in areas you'd expect. PASS on this one!

Summary: Outstanding game, but it has problems
Review: Oni is a revolutionary game as far as hand-to-hand combat goes, but other aspects of the game are lacking. The gameplay is magnificent with the huge array of hand-to-hand combat moves mixed in with superb gun-play. Oni has Tekken 2 like moves, only much much more elaborate. On top of the hundreds of hand-to-hand combos, there is a wide variety of guns, each with their own little quirks. The mercury bow, for example, is a silent, sniper gun that can take down just about any AI with one shot, but takes 5 seconds to reload. Whereas, the machine gun reload very very quickly, but it takes a clip and a half to kill someone. The downside to Oni are the levels. They are quite bland and many look a lot alike. Most of the time, you are finding a console, opening a door, then finding another console to open another door which gets very repetetive after the first few levels. One thing that I was disappointed in was the fact that there is no multiplayer for Oni. Apparently, there were too many bugs in the game to allow for multiplayer to work. If they make a sequel, they should definately put multiplayer in. Overall, it's worth buying the game despite it's obvious shortfalls. The gameplay more than makes up for the bland levels, so go out and enjoy!

Summary: Curiously addictive, but deeply flawed
Review: I have many gripes with this game: the poor save-game system, the bland level design, the constant switch hunting, etc. I have found that it is, however, and in all fairness, a very addictive game. Much of the addictiveness comes from the crisp and innovative fighting system. Some of it comes from the intruiging cut scenes, a few of the games surprise plot points, and an overall ease of play.

Clearly the designers of Oni had some very good ideas. It's strange to see a game that got so much right and, yet, got so very much wrong. There are certainly elements of this title that I would like to see implemented in future games, and I would definitely keep an open mind if I heard that Oni 2 were in development.

As it stands, however, its a game that balances on the thin edge of innovation and frustration. As it stands, I can't recommend the game at full price, but I have no doubt that it will be the jewel of the remainder bin.

Summary: Great fighting sequences but lacking overall.
Review: This game is really cool when there are enemies to fight, dynamics are amazing, but most of the time is spent running around opening doors, pulling switchs or activating computers. The plot is very confused as to what your missions are and there is not any variety in the game. Graphics are blocky and all the misssions look the same as do most of the characters in the game, the save game makes you repeat a lot of gameplay and there is no way to remap the keys.Control of your character would be much improved if you could remap the keys, default keys are to far apart and untuitive for fast paced action. On the plus side sound is okay and there are quite a few fighting moves which have been obviously been copied from the Matrix. Final word buy this game for the fights but you will get bored after about 1 hr of play.
