Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: I thought that would be an enhanced version of "Master of Magic". This is not a half as good as old MoM was! The most frustrating thing is that you cannot build a new city and the old cities can not grow. By the idea this game is closer to "Heroes of Might and Magic" rather than to MoM, but it's not as good as HoMM either. Does anyone need one more clone of HoMM, though not as great as the original was? About the quality - nothing oustanding. Same as millions of other games on the market. And same boring.
Rating: Summary: A review from one of the average people Review: I'm in no way a hardcore gamer. Just an average teen who has an interest in turn based strategy and fantasy. If you never played the very much talked about MoM on this page, and are intending to buy AoW, then I can tell you that it's extremely good. Don't tell me to buy MoM, 'cause I'm satisfied with AoW. Plus, my pocket money doesn't stretch that far. What is Age of Wonders? Age of Wonders is a turn-based game combining the best elements of strategy, adventure and role-playing. It features 12 unique fantasy races, over 50 different heroes with upgradable abilities, dozens of spells and scores of locations to explore. In this game of conquest, players employ strategic and tactical skills to command troops in capturing vital locations and defeating enemies in a captivating single player campaign or compete with friends in multi-player scenarios. It's blurb: Welcome to the Age of Wonders, once a time of magic and peace. An age swept into the ravaging gale of chaos by the arrival of a single, uninvited race: the Humans. The fragile balance that existed between the ancient races, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and others, has changed into a struggle for power and survival in the wake of the turmoil the Humans have brought to the land. Prepare for an adventure where you will uncover wondrous ancient artifacts, awesome magical power, and the secrets of a shattered empire. Ally with the forces of light or darkness to determine the fate of the earth in the AGE OF WONDERS! Well, that's my piece. AoW is definitely worth it!
Rating: Summary: Not MOM, but close enough Review: I'm one of those people that falls for it every time I see "MOM 2" in development on the newsgroups; like Charlie Brown and the football. So enough already! I bought Age of Wonders. The game is delicious. It just outright steals various concepts from MOM, HOMM, and Warlords...but that's great! One thing it lacks: random maps. There's still lots of (but finite) replayability there thanks to all the tweakable settings, difficulty, and sides you can change in the 22 shipped scenarios. Plus, you've got a scenario editor. Truth be told, though, I really prefer random maps for a game like this. I do have to say that the game has atmosphere. Warlords and HOMM seem somewhat sterile and plastic-wrapped in comparison. AoW boasts a richly detailed fantasy background with a deep history (like a Tolkien saga). Scenarios and campaigns are borne naturally out of a story that is both compelling and never contrived. Now, MOM w/ the 1.31 patch is the best game ever made (I'm including chess, American football, and playground tag here). Age of Wonders is not MOM. Still, it's a must-buy for fans of turn-based fantasy gamers. If you've been living off HOMM since MOM stopped working under Win95, try this one on for size. Anyone got a bead on Steve Barcia and Sim-Tex?

Rating: Summary: Best overall turn-based fantasy strategy game Review: If you like turn-based fantasy strategy games, buy this one. I still play this game every other days after 2 years, which for me is the ultimate accolade -- and I buy a LOT of games in almost all genres. It's Master-of-Magic like, but has a huge advantage: it's enormously well supported by independent scenario designers who continue to add scenarios every week. There are HUNDRED of scenarios available, and it's a bargain...
Rating: Summary: Great for fantasy fans everywhere. Review: If you're into the whole "middle-earth" atmosphere (like me), then you're sure to love this strategy game. In addition to a myriad of scenarios and campaign options, this game boasts a wonderful, "Tolkeinite" style story (complete with briefings and journal entries to urge the plot along) and race/character descriptions that anyone who is a little obsessive should love. It's also a game for people who aren't strategy game pros because it's not that hard to master and anyone with some common sense could figure it out. I personally love the often complex maps on which the scenarios/campaigns are played on. The gameplay is quite fun with it's alternating turns and automatic/tactical battle options. Just an overall neat game. P.S. The music is lovely, too!

Rating: Summary: good gamw Review: Iv'e Only Played the demo but I lovre that and the real game will prpobly b better when I get 20 $
Rating: Summary: Almost, but not quite Review: Playing this game, you never think "Boy, I wish they had included..." because they did. This game has everything a lover of fantasy and strategy could want. Upon first playing, it seems to pick up the mantle left by Master of Magic and run with it. But the more you play, the more it just doesn't catch you. I never found myself looking up and seeing daylight with this game, as with other great series (Civ, HOMM, MoM, Warlords). Something is missing that you can't really put your finger on. Rather than wanting to play just one more turn, you instead have to force yourself to keep through each senario. No one I know who has the game played for more than a couple of weeks before getting bored with it. Somehow, it doesn't have the mistical fun factor of a truely classic game. It is an excellently made game, and will perhaps fill the void somewhat, but I am still waiting for a true successor to MoM.
Rating: Summary: My 5 cents: MAGIC EFFECTS ARE GREAT! Review: Say nothing of the gameplay, been there done that, (except, of course, the over-complicated way-too-gossamer diplomacy). The magic effects are marvelous, albeit sacraficing, more than a little, individual unit graphics. If anyone out there disagree with me that the magic effects are "cheap", or "just like MOM", try casting geyser or winds of fury. Not POWERFUL spells, granted, but only AOW has the graphical detail and mentally affectual entrapment of sending a rival hero 50 feet into the air, and crashing down spinning. The graphics for the spells are marvelous, and, in my opinion, the only pinoneer characteristic of this much-competed genre of TBS.
