Summary: No More Sad Faces on Rainy Days-MAX PAYNE is TOPS
Review: Everything already said goes "ditto" for me. MAX PAYNE brings back your kid days when you wished all action was in slo-mo. I Keep playing the same scenes over to find the coolest Slo-mo action.

I'm using Windows Me with a 550P, 128MB RAM, Intel 810e integrated onboard graphics and sound, at 800 x 600. I installed Direct 8.0a, and updated my onboard graphics driver at Intel.com and the game ran perfectly. Absolutely no problems. The graphics might not be what you might get with a Pwr graphics card but the game rocked on what I had.

Perhaps, if you have a good graphics card, with this game less is more. Hafelife what? MAX PAYNE is the NEW STANDARD for single-player action. Aug. 7,2001

Review: When I saw this game in the store I thought it seemed Corny. A NYC cop named Max Payne? Get more predictable then that. I bought it anyways though because my friend liked it. After opening the box and seeing that a small dvd case popped out holding the game, I was impressed. It's the little things that please me I suppose. The best part was that from the dvd case, the gaming experience only gets better. While the game is definetly violent and raunchy, the gameplay is awesome and addictive. Picture Tomb Raider with more action, tons of enemys and incredible graphics. Combine that with the "bullet time" mode which slows down time and gives Max incredible reflexs and is also extremely pleasing to the eye, and you've got a great game. The control, a combination of mouse and keyboard, is awkward at first, but becomes second nature after the first half hour. I also suggest taking the auto aim feature off so you will have to actually aim to hit an enemy. The bullet time mode is so much fun and adds so much to the game, it makes you feel like you are in the matrix. However, like the matrix, the story is a little lacking. While it is interesting and intelligent at first, it gets predictable after a while. But again like the matrix, the action is so incredible, it doesn't matter so much if the story doesn't hold up after seeing it 5 times. This game is definetly worth buying but be warned; you WILL become addicted. It's nearly impossible not to.

Summary: Too much story, not enough action
Review: I can see why some people might be excited over this game. It's got good graphics and I can see that alot of time was obviously spent on the storyline and accompanying graphics. However, for my part I like games that concentrate on the action versus the cutscenes. It seems like you kill three enemies, find some ammo and painkillers and then have to wait through another cutscene. Yeah, the graphics are good, my compliments. But I'd rather have a game that's more fun to play versus worrying about how many bullets and shell casings get drawn in a particular room.

Summary: Fun Fun Fun Fun Fun
Review: Comparisons to Half-Life are entirely appropriate. Think of Half-Life with cutting edge tech. Best looking game yet, a milestone. Great story, great fun. You can play for 12 hours and feel great; it is not like work. You don't need a walk-through, always seem to go the right way. I decribe it as flowing down a river, others say it is like riding on rails. Here's what it doesn't have: difficult jumps, rocket packs, swimming, floating, search for items, hard puzzles.Unfortunately, no multiplayer or online. This game is selling so strong, expect a big mod community. I think the game will have the longevity of Half-Life.

The game does not take much thought, and is easy, making it fun for the average gamer. I never got lost! There are 2 mazes, but directional audio gets you out quick. This game has a low frustration factor.

This is a third person shooter, but plays smooth, like first person. Nobody mentions or compains that it is third person, and this is saying a lot.

Great story, great graphics, great fun. Played all the way through with no serious bugs and did not patch.

This is the greatest game yet. Other great ones are coming. I have nothing negative to say. Others are critical of length of game. I got my money's worth. Maybe a year from now there will be similar graphics in a game that plays 40 hours. Max Payne is here now. I find replay value. Many parts play like an arcade game, and you can find different ways to slaughter. It is constant slaughter, though you can always stop in peace and view the wonderous textures.

Make sure you meet the systems specs. This is the most advanced game, graphically. Looks and plays great at 1024x768 at 32 bit with textures on high. I had trouble at 1280 res. My 3DMark 2001 is 2522. Some people appear to be playing at marks below 1000. I reviewed on 866 PIII, 128 meg ram, GeForce2 GTS 32 meg DDR. More than enough computer for this game, but a 256 stick might improve performance.

Summary: Deus Ex to the MAX
Review: Incredible. Fascinating. Jaw dropping. Spectacular. Max Payne is all this and more. I'm really not sure where to begin on all that is wonderful about this offering. The graphics are fantastic, with richly detailed textures that do a great job of fooling the eye. The movement is smooth and crisp, and aside from a few "ghosts" I had once when the game didn't load properly, the graphic engine is simply top-notch. The sound is superb, rich, and engulfing. Gun battles are truly a delight as you listen to the roar of shotguns and the explosive power of a Desert Eagle. The music is equally well done, though there is one sequence when anyone who has a subwoofer is going to wish they didn't (headache inducing bass). And the plot (did he say "plot" in relation to a computer game), yes, the plot is excellent and wholly believable, very well written and there is apparently talk about Max Payne being fashioned into a movie.

You've probably heard all about the shootdodges and the bullettime features in Max Payne, making it reminscent of the Matrix and some such. I don't know that there's a good way to describe how bullettime works, except to say it's an incredibly innovative feature that really sets Max Payne apart from the field of FPSs. It's not just a gimmick; it's a wonderful tool.

Max Payne is definitely for a mature audience, the game is -about- violence. The world, the plot, the setting, the characters are unanimously about violence. At the same time, though there is a good amount of blood, you don't have the same "gore" quotient as in Soldier of Fortune.

My only quibble... I can't get enough. Seriously... the game was too short. I had beaten it in three sessions, maybe a total of ten or eleven hours. For as much as this game costs (a bit more than most new releases), I'd like to have been able to play it for a bit longer before starting the "replay" process. However, I'd still say it's worth it.

Summary: brutal
Review: Max Payne is one of the most brutal games I have played! I love the matrix type of stuff and the game was all around great! The plot wasnt all that great I thought but with the fighting and all the blood I had to give this game a 5 star!

Summary: The best shooter game yet!!
Review: I love this game. It has mind blowing graphics, but keep in mind that it isnt for a PII 400 system, I was able to get a little chop on my system at times with everything cranked up w./ 4x AA,and the room is full of people, bullets flying and bombs exploding, and I have a Athlon 1.33 w/ 256 Mbs DDR, and an Geforce 3 video card, so I couldnt imagine playing on a lower system, but with the Geforce 3 (get yours today!) you can crank up all the settings w/ 4x AA and its like nothing ever seen before. Great game, extremely violent, some nudity (late in the game in pictures). You have to try it but remeber the system requirements. And the plot will keep you glued to your PC.

Summary: A Marred Thriller
Review: With all the action it promised, I really wanted to love this game. While the action does deliver, I was shocked by the game's wretched writing and story line. Corny at best and offensive at worse, the cut scene comic pages seem to be as one dimensional as the paper they are supposed to be printed on. Yeah yeah, I get the fact that we are supposed to be "in" a graphic novel and the writing is to some extent self referential, however, this graphic novel is just really really REALLY bad. The characters spit out Mickey Spillane lines with no motivation or depth giving the game none of the swagger and mood of the real novels. Yeah, I get the John Woo references too, but, as Generation X taught us, pop-culture references masquerading as entertainment often hide empty space where thoughtful plot and dialogue should be. I commend the developers for the great maps and the eye-popping gun play but I just hate the writing so much it makes me not want to play. Keep the engine, scrap the game.
