Summary: One of the best games I have ever played.
Review: I just finished my first run through of Max Payne. It is truly an amazing experience. The best part being the graphic novel story line throughout the game. It really pushes the pace and draws you into the story. Although the game lacks a multiplayer feature (How could you have multiple people trying to slow time, at the same time anyway?) It is still an incredible game. I suggest quite a bit of RAM or a hefty graphics card (I'm running a Athalon 855, with 512MB of RAM). Simply put the story is the best part of the game. You're a cop whom has lost everything he has held dear to him... All that is left is revenge. I don't know what is so great about it... It just draws me in. Maybe it's just rooting for the underdog. So if you want some fast paced, on the edge of your seat action. With an incredible storyline to back it up. Pick up Max Payne, you will not regret it.

Summary: At least it's pretty...
Review: After a number of years in development it's finally here.....oh goody. It is undeniably pretty, the graphics are first rate and the graphic novel interface is intersting....but thats about it. The number of enemies gets rediculously large, and its just enter a room, kill everyone in the room, move to next room and repeat gameplay.....after such a long development time, it should have been much better than this. Bullettime is an intersting idea, but the timer runs out to quickly for it to be very practical in much of the game...weapons are nicly modeled, but [impratical] to use....many times I have turned a corner and unloaded a load of buckshot directly into some goons face.....and he still lived, it often took 3 shotgun blasts to the head to take one baddie out. It would seem that this game is one of those that jacks up the hit points to the point of absurdidty on some of the main baddies.....one takes around 12-13 shotgun blasts in teh head at point blank range to kill. It really is a shame that after the time it took to develop, this is the result. Abosute waste of money. To enjoy the graphics of teh engine, wait for another game to come out that uses the same engine. 1 star because its pretty and bullettime is a nice innovation

Summary: Good mindless entertainment.
Review: I couldn't in good conscience give Max Payne anything above 3 stars. While very fun in its own right, it doesn't even come close to validating the ... price tag (which can be painful for those of us on a tight budget). While the playtime is increased somewhat if the auto-aim feature is disabled, the game is still much too short unfortunately. However, the game still does provide at least 10-15 hours of great mindless entertainment (depending on how much of a perfectionist you are with the autosaving) and shows great promise for future expansions, hopefully priced much, much lower.

The potential for the Max Payne franchise is sizable to say the least, and I only hope that G.O.D. Games can combine the pure fun and excitement of the many firefights with some strategy (beyond just ducking behind boxes). For example, it would be nice if it were possible to have multiple possible routes through an area instead of the often times linear feel of the game. All in all, Max Payne is enjoyable, yes, but not worth the ... price tag unless you've got money to burn. Wait for the demo if you're in doubt, or play it at a friend's house. You'll probly be able to beat it while you're there.

Summary: YOU MUST PLAY THIS GAME
Review: I've been playing this game nonstop for a couple of days now and I LOVE IT. The environments are rich, the game play is solid, and the interactivity is FANTASTIC!. The story isn't too bad either. A defininate must OWN.

Summary: Head and shoulders above the crowd
Review: I'm not sure why Justin didn't like this game: I found it to be astonishingly fun.

Sure, it's a shoot-em-up, but what separates THIS one from the others is *style*. This game has gobs of style. You're not just shooting up bad guys like in "Die Hard", you're shooting them in John Woo style, complete with sweeping trenchcoats, acrobatic gunfights, and slow-mo (which John Woo was doing YEARS before "The Matrix", BTW).

The action by itself is very impressive, but most impressive is the way it integrates flawlessly into the storyline. While the plot is pretty well mapped out, you feel part of it. This game ALMOST feels like a role-playing game with lots of combat.

Also, I love the little touches in the game. Almost every object you see is functional. A toilet can be flushed. A TV can be turned on. A soda machine dispenses sodas. They really paid attentions to details.

Also, there is a lot of wit in the game. There are a number of visual and auditory jokes -- too numerous to mention -- and frequent homages to the genres that spawned this game.

If you like shoot-em-ups, this is the best one I've seen!

Summary: Interesting but troubled
Review: Well, I love the bullet time, a whole crapload, even if I was VERY rarely forced to use it... The bullet dodge is plenty for most enemies.

Admittedly the enemy AI is kinda... missing, the game as a whole is an extremely enjoyable experiance even so, with a plot that reminds me of a pulp detective story ( first level: the robbers are after some stocks on a table. Something like the third level, you see something on the TV about the same company. Brain goes "kaCHING! that company is the bad guys" well.... guess what! lol )

The graphics are outstanding on my 600mhz Duron, even if they don't really break any new ground. But again, the physics engine is what really makes this game shine... In the first level, you blow a door open, and as the door is flying backwards, everying slooooows down and EVERYTHING goes slower. Wood, metal, glass, flame, EVERYTHING, and remember that this is using the in game engine instead of some cutscene cinima. It really is beautiful, and I hope this technology is used a whole lot more, although in games with more replay value to 'em.

The puzzles in this game, I can't really comment on, because I started Max Payne after beating The Longest Journey, so they just weren't in the same league. They seemed reletively basic though. Reminded me of a cross of Quake1/Tombraider... a bit of switch throwing, a bit of "shoot the little tiny area" and you're there...

All in all, a very enjoyable experiance, with little replay value, but a GREAT hardware test, and I REALLY hope they make a multiplayer patch...

Summary: Very very fun
Review: I didn't think the 'slow-mo' idea would really work, but it turned out to be a great addition to the game. Very interesting story and excellent all in all.

Summary: Max Payne Rules joor world
Review: THIS is the BEST GAME ON THE PLANET! u will enjoy this game until u die! Although it is played from a third person perspective, i recommend it to all fans of action games, whether first or third person. It is a bit violent, but there is a parental control to tune down the violence. Also, this game is realistic, u can't just sit there taking shot after shot after shot, and all the weapons used in the game are real! One of the coolest things is the fact that u can go John Woo style with 2 guns. This game runz on a Intel 450 mhz w/ 96 megs of ram and a 16 meg video card, but it recommends a 700 mhz w/ 128 megs of ram and a 32 meg video card. This is the best game for those people who liked Half-Life, but want a more realistic game, and are very trigger happy (like me) =).

Summary: Be a Hong Kong Action Star
Review: Set in a dark, film noir-ish world, Max Payne dives into PC gaming history in orgasmic slow motion with twin barettas blazing!

Developer Remedy's first foray into the hyper-competitive Shooter market is a good one, delivering a fistful of hot lead in the eye candy and gameplay departments.

While not without it's share of technical and asthetic problems, this is one game experience not to be missed. The third person implementation is better done than many console games and viewers of Hong Action films will no doubt find utter bliss in the John Woo-style action effects--complete with flying shell casings, splattering blood, and flowing black overcoats.

Early reports of the game's sporradic instability problems appear to be justified. My initial impression of the game was almost severely tainted when I arrived at a blue screen of death before even finishing the installation. A second attempt was met successfully, and I quickly added the 6MB patch (downloaded from the Internet). Since then, I've had no problems thus far (knock on wood) and the game runs smoothly on my PIII 600 with 392MB of RAM and geForce MX.

While the game is relatively short, and the story is somewhat cliched, the replay value is heightened by a level editor which will no doubt spawn some interesting mods by intrepid individuals in the near future.

Overall an excellent effort and worth the price of admission. Recommended.
