Rating: Summary: Merely very good, as opposed to the sequel Review: I just cannot help comparing this game with BG2, which makes it look sort of incomplete, with lots of wasted potential. But if I just think of it as its own game, there is no doubt it is worth five stars.A few years back, I got interested in AD&D, but never really managed to even properly try to get into it; I am hardly a sociable kind of person, and would not have even known what to do. Anyway, I think I got Planescape: Torment some time afterwards; it satisfied my need for computer roleplaying but not AD&D style fantasy stuff; it was too nonstandard. BG, which I acquired some time later, was all but. It was like a real epitome of Tolkien-imitation fantasy, and very nearly everything I had wanted (and everything that was missing, and more, I found in BG2 later on). In BG, which is situated in an extremely standard (and well-made) fantasy world and applies an extremely standard (and well-made) rpg rule system, you start out with a level 1 character, a complete weakling (particularly if you are a wizard) at first who becomes powerful in the normal fashion, whose role you're supposed to play, and a number of other, pre-made (as opposed to the PC, whom you can determine to be exactly as you want) characters can join you later on. Then you go around solving a mystery - which makes for a pretty decent plot, and a very good later on when certain surprising elements appear to it - and doing lots of completely optional quests; it is easy to achieve the maximum experience point amount for all characters - at least if you do not change them too often - long before the end. The interpretation of the AD&D rules seems well-nigh perfect, the graphics are good, the sounds and musics nice, and the only thing that is really bad is the "pathfinding AI" of the characters, which makes them go the wrong way most of the time when in small, confined spaces. There are some minor faults, such as that, sort of realistically but very inconveniently, the game unpauses when going into the inventory screen, or that, while the NPCs that can join your party have clear personalities, they rarely interact with you or anyone or react to anything, but these can be forgiven - and have almost all been fixed in BG2. BG2 is yet much, much better than this game, but play it anyway, and then continue with the same character into that sequel which this original game is really just a prelude to. And a final *W*A*R*N*I*N*G*!*: There is something in this game's plot that is only revealed in the end, though it is hinted at all the time. Do not read reviews of BG2 - or even these reviews here for some of them, made by amateurs as they are, reveal it - before you have found it out yourself. It, and initially not knowing it, is rather the idea of the whole game.
Rating: Summary: funfunfun Review: This game was my very favorite until BG2 came out. I've finished it at least 5 times, and will probably play it again in the future. I didn't find anything wrong with this game.
Rating: Summary: Definitely worth the buy Review: As far as hours of play versus cost, this game is perfect. There are many different areas of the map to explore, and the storyline is pretty good. You can go on various side-quests, or go in a (relatively) straight line to the bad guy. This game is a little old (I think it came out about 3 years ago), but there are very few problems that I've seen. A background in Dungeons and Dragons isn't necessary, either, so people new to D&D won't get lost. All in all, I'd say that this is a good game for people who like RPGs, fantasy afficianados, strategists (the battles take a lot of strategy), and people who like character design (something I always get a kick out of). It's definitely worth the money you spend on it, and if you like it, you can continue with your same character in Balder's Gate II (which is also good).
Rating: Summary: Still a great game Review: Baldur's Gate is still a great game even after several years. 3/4 view, solid role playing, good range of character classes, interesting antagonists, plentiful quests, and lots of magic make it a must play for any serious role player.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic game for any RPG fan! Review: I have to admit I have never played the pen and paper version of D&D, but be that as it may, I still found this game to be a very enjoyable, humorous, exciting and interesting RPG adventure. I have been playing RPG games for a long time now, and I can say that this game hands down is in the top ten I have ever played. And if you get the expansion pack that is also available, it will be even better!
Rating: Summary: Baldurs Gate is first of its kind. Review: Baldurs Gate is by far one of the best computer role [laying games to come out in a long time. The game is by first of its kind. It is the first game with the DND name to be in 3D. But what makes the game so special is its fantastic story line. The story is brilliantly thought up and flows wonderfully. The game also has very real NPC's with actual backround stories and everything. The game also has hundreds of monsters to fight and even more things to throw at them, including spells and numerous weapons. This is a great game for even those who have never even played Dungeons and Dragons before and I highly recomend it to anyone with any intrest in roleplaying whatsoever.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST GAME EVER!!! Review: Baldurs Gate redefines, and completes the lack of roleplaying games recently. I can't remember last time I played a good role playing game on my PC. I must say that games like Zelda, and other "role playing" games, are quite good. But for the hardcore experience of role playing, as true to real role playing as possible, you have to have a PC to make it work. Finally, the PC gets a game that IS hardcore role playing. Baldurs Gate is everything I want in a game within this genre, plus much more. I only wish that there were more games like this. For any role playing fan, I urge you to try this one out. It has lots of characters to get into depths with, many paths to take, although there is of course just one plot in the game. The music is breathtaking as well, which I think is very important to captivate the player. Not since Daggerfall has there been a game that captivates the player into it's world as much as Baldurs Gate, and still, Baldurs Gate does know it's limitations, unlike for instance Daggerfall. Baldurs Gate 2 is ok, but I recommend the first game most hearty. Because of its incredible music, wonderful story, compelling AD&D style, and with the quality which no game that I can remember has.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic start... Review: This game is a fantastic start to a very enjoyable (and long) saga...that of the Bhaalchild traversing Faerun, ever pursued by his/her destiny. The game is highly enjoyable and the graphics and gaming engine are superb. However, the game loses much of its fire after its sequel is sampled. Shadows of Amn is even better, and the improvements are very tangible as everything is heavily complexified and the game becomes more challenging and engaging. I advise that gamers play this game to see if they enjoy the setup and type of game, and then delve into the far richer Shadows of Amn.
Rating: Summary: SWEET! Review: Dude, this game is really, really cool. I bought it not knowing if it was any good, but the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons logo caught my attantion. i bought it and I am very glad i did. The control is very sweet, the ability to pause will become your very best friend. Another good thing about the game is the leangth, i always like long games. Baldur's Gate introduces a new level of challenge and difficulty. it is by far one of the most challenging, not neccasserily hard games i have ever played. Well I hope you like the game as much as I.
Rating: Summary: One ring to rule them all one ring to find baldurs gate. Review: Those of you that are fans of jrr tolkien's lord of the rings will love this game if that series was a rpg it would be called baldurs gate thats how good this is. Although the plot is diffrent it is very much the same.
