Summary: Fades quickly
Review: I brought this game after reading most of the available online reviews. After installing I played for about three hours straight. By the end of the week the game was relegated to the useless stack. The graphics and sound are very good, but the gameplay becomes very boring fast.

Summary: Outstanding!
Review: I got this game for Christmas 2001 and absolutely love it!

Back in the days of Sid Meier's Pirates!Gold I couldn't stop playing that game. Now this one has got me hooked. The best description for this game that I can think of is "Sid Meier's with better graphics". For example:

SAILING
The sailing is downright awesome. the programmers integrated wind and storms really well. There are times when the weather's clear and the wind is strong and other times when the fog is pea-soup thick and there's barely a wind at all (fustrating, but very realistic!) The game offers a first person perspective from the deck of the ship and a thrid-person perspective from and angle, including a zoom feature. when on deck you can travel to different points on the ship although I was disappointed that one couldn't go into the captains cabin nor climb into the crow's nest. But sailing was wonderful, crashing waves and all!

Navigation is by a seperate map screen, which means sailing from the first-person perspective from island to island is impossible. (Well, maybe... I haven't had the patience to try.)

COMBAT
Very nice! The ship's cannon are conenttrated on the sides but each ship has a handful of guns mounted on the stern to ward off chasers. A nice touch. There are four types of shot: ball, grape, keppels, and bombs. Ball shot are cheap and do some damage. Keppels tear apart sails and rigging, grape kill crew mmebers, and bombs are expensive but much more devastating than ball (a definite must for attacking forts!)

The swordfighting is similar to Sid Meier's Pirates! in that health is proportional to the number of crew on either side. Overall, the sword-fighing moel is very pretty and very nice.

IN TOWN
Walking from store to store can be frustrating, but interacting with the people definitely adds depth to the adventure. You'll walk the streets asking yourself "now where in blazes is that so-and-so?" The town's details are very well done and the quests will keep you glued to your screen.

Your nationality is readily apparent from the flag on your ship and the town's reactions to your approach. Feel free to change at will, provided you're willing to pay the price...

OVERALL
A very flexible, open-ended RPG. There are linear elements to the game, but there are several plotlines to explore should you exhaust the one you find yourself in. Your in-game choices are many and all are a lot of fun. If you liked Pirates!Gold, then this is the game for you. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Amazing!!
Review: I have to admit some surprise after reading all the poor comments about this game I was stunned at how good it really is!! I am a fanatic fan of the age of sail (the era not the game), so I was more then willing to put up with the difficulty of the begining of the game. Yes it is hard to use such a small ship, but more often then not you can avoid larger ships by ignoring them. The absolut must is to invcrease your boarding skill upfront and that eliviates allot of frustration as you can defeat the captains of much larger ships. This is just as addictive as other classics. I can't wait to see the next installment. PS the patch I installed fixed everything from graphics to the ability to change to difficulty, available on the seadog web site.

Summary: This is Great!!!!
Review: I just got this game a week ago, and I can't stop playing it. I had some trouble in the beggining because you start out with a really small ship. I learned that if a big ship attacks you, it will probably be slower, so just run away. Make sure to get a lot of money and talk to everyone in a town to get experience points.
This game is a lot of fun once you get a bigger ship, so work your way up and you'll love it!

Summary: Great Graphics! Very tough to master-
Review: I love games of this nature and I was very excited and anxious to play it. The graphics are wonderful but...the game could be better. First of all, the makers must have left half the instruction book on the drawing board. The book does a good job describing the different ships and characteristics of the weapons but as far as tips on winning and playing- forget it, pal- you're on your own. My first time out on a ship..a very small ship because that's all you can afford in the beginning, I was ambushed by two huge pirate vessels! They easily caught my little boat and I was faced with dueling the pirate captain. I think he sneezed on me and I was dead. I later found out that if you speak to different townspeople, they will give tips on playing but I'm impatient and don't want to walk up to every Tom, Dick and Harry on the virtual streets of 'SeaDogs' to find out how to play the game! After hours/days of practice I was able to make enough to get a bigger ship- then the fun begins as you can turn around and pick on little boats. Towns are virtually impossible to take over and after you've visited all of them, it gets a little boring. Since it takes a tremendous amount of cash to do almost anything you find yourself raiding merchant ships and constantly selling off plundered goods just to keep enough people on the boat to sail it! I played the original 'Pirates!' years ago- and although this game looks great..I'd take the (10 year old?) 'Pirates!' game over this one-

Summary: Sea Dogs A epic story of a pirates life
Review: I think this is one of the best rgp/pirates games i have ever played. The rich 3d graphics make you feel like you are a true sea dog. Plenty of action, and you can pick a country to fight for, french, english, or spainish. Or fight for yourself as a pirate.Take over ships you board,or storm into a port after you destroy it. I love to plunder and there is plenty of that in this game. Dont wait for Seadogs 2 buy this one. I have played Seadogs 2 and it wasnt as good as the first one.......

Summary: Poor Interface, Slow Gameplay, Uninspired Content
Review: I was so excited when I saw this on the shelf. I brought it home and played it, hoping that it would be superior to pirate games of the past.

Well, the merchant factor was annoying, the engagement was atrocious, and at one point my ship was sunk every time I tried to leave a certain port. I had to actually start the game over.

For 40 bucks, there are so many quality games you can buy. I love gaming. I love pirates. But I despise this game. The interface is clunky, the graphics are good, but not exceptional, the gameplay is mundane and formulaic. Can't someone develop a pirate game that doesn't focus solely on getting a letter of marque, and bungling around trying to attack the Spanish? Haven't we come farther than that? It's just so disappointing.

How about a mouse based interface? No, no, let's just keep it on the keyboard. This is 2001. This game makes Castle Wolfenstein look speedy. Will someone in the Pirate Gaming genre, please, please hire someone with an imagination?

Summary: Not perfect, but nothing else like it.
Review: I've been waiting for a game to do justice to the Pirate's genre for years. Sea dogs makes a valiant effort, though not succeeding on every point. For those who enjoyed Sid Meyer's Pirates, like myself, you may find a few things lacking in Sea Dogs. The setting is an imaginary group of islands, not the Caribbean as I had hoped. The number of visitable islands is also fairly limited. The towns you can visit are pretty, but limited in their scope. Gameplay is limited to one character so I don't believe this is a true RPG, but the game does deal in experience points, hit points and skill points in your character's progression. This game does have a steep learning curve, with novices getting blasted out of the water on a regular basis. So why did I give this game 5 stars? The sailing sequences are breathtaking with beautiful waves, ships, and environmental effects. Battling other ships and forts is also great 3d fun and the gameplay in between is solid enough to keep me playing again and again (much to the irritation of my wife). The makers are developing patches as I write this, so hopefully the game will only get better. Until then, there's still nothing else out there like it.

Summary: Fun but only when it actually works
Review: I've been waiting for a Pirates game since the original Pirates from ten years ago. This one was fun and seemed to have some good potential. But that's only when you can get it to work. I have a machine that should run this game very smoothly and even with everything upgraded it freezes all the time and is more buggy than any other game I've played. And the patch 1.06 only caused more problems than it fixed. Also techincal support for it was basically non existant. I've also gone to the forums for the game and the general feeling is that they created the game and then went AWOL when the customers looked for help with the problems in it. I gave it two stars because it is pretty fun when you can get it to work.
