Summary: I Wish They Could All Be This Good
Review: Alas, if only there were more games like Antietam. I'd pay 10x what I paid for this game to see a sequel. Most RTS "War" games lose me with their emphasis on cute, dumbed-down graphics. This game hasn't forgotten that playability is the heart of any true RTS game. Not that the graphics are bad- they're great- but the intense and mostly realistic play makes them a secondary issue. This game is good for hours and hours of play.

Another jewel in Antietam's crown is the exhaustive unit detail. Each unit is accurately portrayed with the correct unit designation and commander. Field commanders, from the brigade level up, are also accurately represented. You'll find that this adds to the fun when you realize that one of your units is doing battle with a storied enemy commander!

What makes this game such a massive hit? First, the ability to control of a large army and deploy that army strategically across a vast battlefield against a determined enemy of similar size. Most true RTS fans won't need to read much further, but if you're not quite at the shopping cart yet, you should also know that you can play the full battle of Antietam as one campaign (not in annoying little pieces like "Gettysburg"). The full battle can last for days! Megalomaniac arm-chair generals take note!

I'll never understand why games as acclaimed and enjoyed as this go without follow-up. How difficult can it be to recycle the game engine and come up with a dozen new battles? Take my money, please!

Buy this game, it's an RTS must-have and it will give you hours and hours of enjoyment. But be forewarned, you'll grow to arrive at the same place I am today- frustrated that your new favorite game has no future.

Summary: Hurrah! For Antietam!
Review: As a veteran of tactical war games using miniatures, I can say that Sid Meier has finally realized the potential of the computer in delivering a minatures quality game without the expense of acquiring figures and terrain (which can easily run into thouands of dollars).

Furthermore, these miniatures are animated! They march, they wheel, they fire, they charge, and sometimes they run away. Having played Gettysburg, my main complaint was that all Union troops were in kepis, all Confederates in slouch hats.

Imagine my surprise playing Antietam to see a regiment of Confederates Zouaves moving across the field, with fez's and tassles (from Louisiana, I think). The Iron Brigade wears their famous black hats. Some regiments have blanket rolls, others wear full packs. Kepis and slouch hats are found in both armies, sometimes within the same regiment. Some Confederates wear gray, others are in butternut. The tunic may be blue, the pants light blue.

Artillery includes Napoleon's, old 6-lbers, 3 inch rifles, and 10 and 20# Parrots. There is an option to fire cannister.

The sound effects are outstanding. You click on an order and you hear an officer yelling "Bayonets!" The gunfire sounds good, as does the grumbling within the ranks "When are we gonna get moving?", etc.

The terrain is beautiful and realistically detailed. Cover and line of sight are built into the rules.

Aesthetically, the game is superb.

The rules force you to use historical tactics. The are four grades of troops, from green to crack, and four grades of commanders. As they fight, losses and fatigue drive to regiments to the breaking point. You will learn the importance of tactical reserves, feints, and shifting the main point of attack.

Best of all, the player merely gives the orders. No hours painting hundreds and thousands of figures, or filling a 9X6 table top battlefield with terrain. And best of all, no rolling of dice, no consulting the rules manual, no bookkeeping. The program does all of this for you to the sound of roaring cannon and crackling musket fire.

Antietam completes the revolution in war gaming started by his Gettysburg. One can only hope Mr. Meier will extend his genius to the Napoleonic battlefield.

Summary: What an Awesome Civil War Game
Review: Being a history freak and a reenactor I am really picky on how correct history is. Sid Meier does that as well as keeping the game fun. The battlefields are precise and detailed just like the real battlefields. The sound effects and graphics are really good. You can actually hear the bugle calls and the sounds of gunfire and cannons are great as well. But this game requires some stradegy. You can't attack head on. You will get driven back just as if you were a general in the Civil War. If you want to win you must try to get around the enemy and flank them. I got it about a year ago and I still win and lose. Overall this an excellent game for history fans and people who just like good stradegy games! Maybe Mr. Meier should add more battlefields to his collection. How about Fredericksburg or Manassas!

Summary: Buy Sid Meier's Gettysburg instead
Review: For some reason, this collection of three games (Gettysburg, Antietam, South Mountain) has more technical glitches and bugs than the standalone release of Gettysburg. I experienced so many audio and video problems in Antietam and South Mountain that I have to pronounce them unplayable. Your results may vary, but Sid Meier's Gettysburg was a better buy for me.

Summary: Sid Mier's Gettysburg
Review: Gettysburg is basically a game of strategy. Keep your troops entrenched, in the woods, in orchards, etc. Also stay focused on the morale bar in the bottom left corner of the screen. Don't let the red rise to high or your troops may become routed.
Most importantly, if a regiment falls back under fire replace it with a reserve regiment. Once the regiment has rallied you may want to move it back to where it was. As I said before keep your troops behind defenses whenever possible. If they are behind defenses they will gain an extra morale bar. I think this game is extremly enjoyable once you get used to it.

Summary: Great game for CW Buffs!
Review: I am a HUGE Civil War buff, the biggest in my town, or thereabouts. I've gotten hooked on this game for hours at a time. It's wonderful, controlling Rebel or Yankee units, watching them fight, and then at the end reviewing the battle. My little brother is 9 years old and barely knew that the Civil War even existed until I bought this game, and now he's almost as big a CW buff as me. I tell ya, this game transforms people. One time in the summer I stayed up till 4 a.m. playing this game, and I coulda stayed longer. You MUST buy this game. Although it doesn't have the best graphics in the world, it teaches you plenty about the battle. Another great point: with special online connections, play Yanks and Rebs online with a buddy!! :D I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY RECOMMEND THIS GAME FOR ALL CIVIL WAR BUFFS! If you don't buy or at least rent it, why do you call yourself a CW buff?
