Summary: sceptic won over
Review: deeply concerned that this series might become more 'commercial,' we were cautious and critical at first (the music lacks merit; the water, some of it, is jello; a commercial artist gets in the way (paintings, 'photos', hasty props)? and are there flaws, bugs? no more. none.

the team has risen to the superb opportunites offered by more recent technology (cubic quicktime). the plot works. the puzzles are all solvable (11 year olds have visual skills)...kudos to the texture people, to the overall pacing, structure, the rich and satisfying, never-ending worlds. more! (and now record for us real cities, prague..)

Summary: A little buggy...
Review: I absolutely loved the original Myst and Riven. However, the newest installment is plagued with a variety of gliches. It runs just fine on some of the newest, fastest computers, but has significant difficulties on many others (including mine). If you want to buy it, visit the website first www.myst3.com and read up about it in the users' forum. They are working on a patch (a couple are already out but don't fix everything) but then again, they've been saying this since June and it's October. Buyer beware.

Summary: Myst exile opinon from middle aged player
Review: This is by far a more difficult game than the other "Mysts". It doesn't compare to Riven, being my fav of all the others. Nice try on the part of the developers.

Summary: The best of both Myst and Riven
Review: Myst III: Exile combines the best of the original Myst with the best of Riven. Puzzles are not pointless: There is a relationship from world to world, consistent with the original Myst. I thought this feature was lacking in Riven. The animation in Exile is also excelllent so long as the 1st run product is enhanced with an online patch. The multiple choice ending is also exciting. I found there is actually 2 solutions considered a win, although one is obviously preferrable. I must admit that I found the scenery in Riven to be the most captivating. However, the transition from world to world in Exile is unbeleivable. In fact, After moving from the 2nd world, I decided to save the thrid world in a different file so I could "replay it" for others to see. Characters are good, plot is very good--- While Riven was a bit disappointing, I found Exile to be challenging, entertaining, and a game that intensified my Myst "link" once again!

Summary: Myst3 is more about outopistic architecture than just a game
Review: It is dissapointing to read reviews that give 1 star to a "game" for hard puzzles?!!! wow. Myst is just a puzzle? If you want to solve puzzles dont bye Myst! If you want to kill monsters dont bye Myst.Myst is not a game. Myst is about fantasy worlds that can only be visualy presented with the up to date graphics technology. If you cant be suprised by this technology dont bother.Just kill monsters and solve puzzles. Myst3 is a taste of what games would be like in the future when computers will be able to provide us with an interactive realtime world of Myst.Myst is what humans mind can imagine, create and present as real as this technology can present it. So if you are the kind of people that just want to complain that "myst is not running" probably cause you dont know anything about computers or just like to play action games with guns and never get in the world behind the scenes "The making of all these thing and what is about to follow" then you will never be able to see that myst3 is the first game that gives you animation graphics through video .Animarion graphics that you wouldnt be able and will probably never be to see unless you own a ONYX silicon graphics multiple proccesor station. Myst can be apreciate from the people who understand technology and realy want to use it for creating any kind of art. The rest of you can just play games for ever.

Summary: a treat with some flaws
Review: the game is undoubtedly beautiful to look at, and the atmospheric sound and music are gorgeous. however, on my reasonably fast mac i did have some trouble with some of the filmed sequences not appearing correctly or the speech not matching the speaker's mouth, and would have to quit the game and reload until the problem corrected itself.

the game was challenging, but perhaps not quite enough. decidedly easier than riven, which was cruelly difficult (there is, however, a moment in exile where one must find a passageway in the edanna age that is virtually impossible to locate, and for which i had to succumb to a cheat--to the programmers: the fun in these games is not wandering around endlessly looking for a hidden passage, but in solving the puzzles). i finished exile much too soon for my taste, and i was very disappointed that the last age (narayan) should be so startingly short. that said, the solving of puzzles in exile was deeply satisfying in the way that only the myst series can offer.

lastly, brad dourif's hack acting as Saavedro (the bad guy) is borderline embarrassing, especially compared to Rand Miller and Maria Galante, who are excellent as Atrus and Catherine.

in short, an superb game if only twice as long, with some more climactic puzzles at the end, and improved animation performance for the mac.

Summary: Exile
Review: This game is best in graphics compared to the first two though Riven is very close. Though it is difficult at first you get the idea of what you are suppose to be doing like the other Myst games. In this world you can look at things in diferent directions such as up, down, and left or right. The plot isnt as good as the other Myst games, but that isnt why your playing it anyway. it is much more fun to look at the graphics and scenery and all the neat puzzles.

Summary: No better than Riven, alas.
Review: The original Myst was a phenomenon, and deservedly so. A visually beautiful adventure that depended on intellect rather than reflex. Most importantly, _mere mortals_ could, with patience and exploration, solve all of the puzzles without resort to any hint book.

However, Riven was a different story. I'm certain a few people out there managed to navigate Riven without reference to any outside source...the 99.9th percentile of purchasers, those with infinite time and infinite patience, in my uninformed guess. Unlike Riven, I completed Myst without outside reference. With Riven, OTOH, I was eventually baffled without outside help. And so it is with Myst III.

The heck with it. I'm sticking with Solitaire from now on.

Summary: Trouble - won't run!
Review: Purchased Myst Exile in May - installed immediately but when tried to play, it resulted in a "dump". Wrote Ubisoft - now 4 times and unable to obtain ANY support.

The only thing I get is:
Your question has been received. You should expect a response from us as soon as possible (usually within 72 hours).

After 4 months I don't believe the 72 hours any more.

Gave 1 star - but I don't feel I'm able to rate the program at all - it just doesn't work!

Summary: Waste of my money
Review: I just could not get into this game. I really liked Riven, but Myst III does not, in any way, compel me to keep on trying to solve the puzzles in order to get farther. I solved the first major puzzle, which involved lining up reflecting lights in order of color to open a door on an island. It took me a while, but I finally figured it out, and opened the door...only to find another puzzle preventing me from opening the NEXT door. I mean, come on. I guess I'm just not a big fan of puzzle games anymore, or something. The story does NOT make me want to solve them, at any rate. It's slow and sluggish, at least at first (I never got past the first part, because I was just too bored.)

So, the eagerly-awaited Myst III: Exile is sitting on my desk, collecting dust. I feel absolutely no urge to go play it, although I will give it one star for the pretty graphics.

Buy this game only if you really, REALLY like thinking and solving almost-impossible puzzles. Everyone I know who has this game was forced to buy the guide to go with it.
