Summary: Fairly Accurate
Review: Arcanum is expected to be a very good game. It was created by the makers of Fallout and its less worthy sequel, and all hopes are high. I myself, however, have not played the game, or a demo of it.

For all who might be reading, I wrote this report in response to the one-star, near sighted review around here somewhere. No game deserves to be vindicated for its release date, and it is very likely that Arcanum will be a very good RPG. Please EDUCATE yourselves before writing a review that can condemn a genre, and the result of the very hard work of a group of artists and game makers. I saw the same about Myst 3, and Myst 3 was awesome, if you can stand the annoying puzzles.

I recommend, personally, that you find out more before you order this game. Good things were said about Fallout Tactics, and that game was terrible. I'd wait till the real reviews.

Summary: impatient people suck
Review: be patient, every great game takes time to make, if they had released it last year it probably wouldnt be half as good as it will be when they do release it. Ya, waiting sucks, but if it means significant improvement on the game, GREAT!

Summary: Great for those who have never played an RPG
Review: I am not an RPG gamer at all. The closest I ever come to that genre would be a real-time strategy game like warcraft or thief 2. I was very skeptical when i downloaded the demo (I was more interested in what the AI was like than in the game itself), but after spending some time with it am completely addicted. The game does not fall into the trap that most of these games do by forcing you down the path of a single pre-formatted storyline. You are free to roam and explore and play with everything and everybody in the game. The story generally unfolds around you.

I have just re-started the demo as anoter character and am also pleasently surprised at the fact that it this new game is not a carbon copy of the game I just put down. I think as communities grow and mods and characters are developed, I could actually play this game over again after beating it (which apparently takes about 100 hours).

I give Arcanum [in my best Ebert voice] "2 enthusiastic thumbs up."

Summary: The game concept and the anticipation is what entices.
Review: Note: As of this review, Sierra recently pushed Arcanum' release to September, 2001.

A consolation to those who await Arcanum's eventual release:

When working on an ambitious project such as Arcanum, with its intriguing storyline and intricate gameplay concept, the developers want nothing but the best possible product for their players. So, it surprises me not to see the release date pushed back repeatedly. True, we hope that the game avoids Daikatana's pitfall--overhyped and underdelivered after years of wait--but look at the development team masterminding this game:

Formerly of Black Isle studios, we see the original designers and developers of Fallout and Fallout 2, published through Interplay. As many of you remember, the games industry hailed Fallout as a ground-breaking game in a very narrow genre--post apocalyptic, science fiction RPGs. Truly, how many science fiction RPGs can we name, anyway? Now, Arcanum envisions itself as a game that ventures into an even less-explored realm--that of steamfantasy. Similar to steampunk (a blend of cyberpunk and Victorian England), steamfantasy takes elements of H.G Wells' Time Machine and mixes it with J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Now, who can say they know of a game such as this? Enticing, no?

What keeps me patiently waiting for Arcanum is the promise of a new genre of gaming rarely seen in computer games, and the knowledge that the developers behind its making are renowned for producing games that make bold ventures in unfamiliar terra...and succeed phenomenally. What keeps me from giving five stars is, of course, the long wait and repeated delays, but when Arcanum finally arrives, I know that I will purchase it without hesitation.

For previews about Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, read the July 2000 edition of Computer Games Magazine and the September 2000 edition of PC Gamer.

Again, the game concept and the anticipation is what entices. Hopefully, the game fulfills--indeed, surpasses--its expectations. We hope that it follows the path of Diablo II, rather than Daikatana, in fulfilling its expectant players' collective cravings for its arrival.

Summary: Delays
Review: It is very annoying that Sierra has repeatedly postponed releasing this game. They should do something to make it up to customers who pre-ordered the game and then were left waiting.

Summary: Very promising
Review: I played the Demo for this game, and I have to say that this it was very impressive. I liked this game's reputation system which in my opinion is alot more involving than "Fallout". The reputation system is involving because it is based off of your actions, race, and weather you are a Technologist or a magician, for example, if you are a Half-Orc who likes to use the technological disciplines, you won't be able to get any help from a magic using Elf, this is definatly better than "Fallout's" reputation system which was only based off actions. The character generation is also interesting, you get to create a character that you see in your own image. Each race has all their character points already set, does this sound disappointing? Well, even though you can't change character points, you can choose a background, one feature that wasn't featured in "Fallout". You can choose a background to your choosing, the backgrounds you can go to being a person who ran away from a circus to a mad scientist, some of these effects stats, skills, and reputation, while others only give you a special item at the beginning, such as inheritence where you start out with twice as much money than any other character, but it only effect one stat that is somewhat important. Even those these features are very interesting, it did lack a veriety of locations for the Demo, and the release date for the finished game has been irritadingly canceled. I hope to see the finished game soon, it's going to be great ! :)

Summary: Give them time
Review: If you are tired of waiting for this game to be released and starting to wonder if it is worth it, don't worry. Sierra, along with Valve, published Half-Life much later than expected. Half-Life is STILL the top 3D-shooter game since it's release in 1999. Give them time, they will give you want you want - and a whole lot more!

Summary: if it's as good as the demo- then this game rocks!
Review: I just played the demo for about 6 hours, and thought it was fabulous. Now I'm not an expert @ PC games- i come from the nintendo/playstation genre of RPG, namely Final Fantasy series. And I like that kind of feel to my games. So when the full version is available i will definetly buy it.

Summary: Frustrated Former Customer
Review: Well it looks like Sierra has decided to take it's time in makeing this game. In the meantime I'm afraid there going lose their customer base if they keep pushing foward the deadline.

If memory serves me correct, Sierra was going to publish this game last year (I think around September). Then they decide to release it this May. Now it's once again been pushed back to September.

I was very interested in this game when I first heard about it last year. But now I'm just fed up with Sierra. In fact I'll be suprized if I buy the game when (and if) they publish it.

I honestly think that anyone out there who was interested in this game ought to just not buy it. ... the game. Maybe then Sierra will respect their customers and their deadlines.

It is out of fustration that I give this game, which still hasn't been published, a 1 star.
