Summary: Very good game, worth a couple of weekends.
Review: The editor panned the skins as cartoonish, and I agree, but I think they were trying for that when they created the game. The graphics in this game are very good, I would scale them on a 5 out of 5 (make sure you got the latest drivers!). The single-player gameplay is not nearly as bad as these guys say: The AI is about as good as the original Unreal (I would give it a 4 out of 5). I found the game entertaining enough to finish, which means a LOT, since I lost interest and never finished the original Unreal (I was hooked on HL and Quake 2). I would suggest this to any serious gamer who want some serious eye candy with a few challenges thrown in here and there. This game is NOT a dog, I guarantee it.

Summary: And how is unreal 2 unreal?
Review: Personally, i loved the original unreal. It had it ALL, 5 star in every category you could think of...technology, story, gameplay. Unreal 2 does not deliver. Coasting away from the original unreal's thrilling storyline, unreal 2 has a somewhat cookie cutter storyline that is simply unoriginal and used that i shall not comment on. Gameplay is linear and pretty straight foward, a odd meager 12 hours certainly prooves worst of show! Technology is the highlight.

Unreal 2 has stunning graphics? Not really. It's based on rudimentary poor-boy dated direct-x 8 technology, "Oh, this game includes some extorindary particle effects with reflective surfaces and 3020 polygon counts......oooh environment maps and dynamic light maps with blur shadows!".

Yeah, it's kind-of like that! Not soooo satisfying. So sound is another EAX 3/DirectSound/Surround sound average powered game. Nothin' special. When you enable it even with the latest drivers on an Audigy or Audigy 2 Sound Blaster card, you can notice an unacceptable frame rate drop at the cost of performance. Oh well, EAX is as buggy as hell anyway.

Let me comment on the physics engine, a very nice addition. Bodies move very realistically powered by millions of intense math code calculations only possible by the Karma Cat program. Physics is cool but i'd recommend at least a 2GHZ CPU from INTEL or AMD to gain reasonable performance when sending physics to the max detail!

Oh, and that reminds me of system requirements. Very crushing! A 733mhz CPU with 256MB of RAM and a 32MB GeForce 2 MX is quite high, and does not perform reasonably on those system specifications EVEN on low settings or the recommended(even at medium settings, recommend: 1.2ghz CPU, 384 MB of RAM, 64MB GeForce 3) or even the high system specifications(1.8ghz CPU, 512MB of RAM, 128MB GeForce 4 Ti at high settings), and takes up a modernly high huge chunck of hard drive space, 3 GIGS. So how is UNREAL 2 UNREAL, is the question?

It's satisfying graphically and impressive, just doesn't have the shock of the water fall like the original threw in your face. Instead of calling it "unreal 2: the awakening", legend entertainment should have called it: "Unreal 2: the falling", and legend entertainment's wheel of time masterpeice was more interesting in one whole level than the entire unreal 2 game itself...! Now UNREAL 2 has to have some replayablility, right? Nope, no mutliplayer.

This makes the game die really fast and hard. The unreal editor included with unreal 2 is claimed to be flexible and easy to use but i found it to be flexible, but very hard to use, and might put off some amature modders.

So let me get this straight and evaluate what unreal 2 has delivered on gamer's doorsteps: Good technology, oldskool outdated run-n-gun straightfoward gameplay and super thin storyline with hard editor to use, lots of bugs, and no multiplayer, plus steep system requirements.

And this was what 50$ was worth back in february and what we waited for about a few years?(4-5 years).....THIS is what we waited for? Well, i'll never set my sight on legend entertainment again, All i have to say is unreal 2 BETTER BE GOOD for XBOX when it hits the shelves during holidays 2003. Actually, the title is right. Unreal isn't lifelike, it's UNREAL. LOL! *_*

Summary: Technical Problems
Review: Well, I bought this game for my computer meeting the system requirements but still had problems running it. So, I upgraded my video memory to 32 Bit (Radeon). Though the requirements state Radeon or NVIDIA would, work NVDIA was recommended. I am very upset because I have a laptop and I can only use a Radeon video memory card and the game locks up in the middle of a mission and won't go any further. I love the game but I cannot get beyond the technical glitches. I believe the producers of this game should have done a better job making it usable for any system that meets the requirements. I have had no problems with any other games.

Summary: Great game
Review: this game is a lot of fun. the graphics are a pleaser, and the gameplay and story keep you hooked. The weapons are an absolute blast, very innovative and cool looking. It suits a few different types of players, as well. if you're into stealth; sniping off a few and then cleaning up the rest, you get some missions for that. if you like to go in guns a blazing, you get some missions for that, too. the missions are very varied and it keeps the game fresh and interesting. the story is Very suspenseful. The only thing that keeps this game from 5 stars is a) it's pretty linear, and b) there's no incentive to go back and beat it again. still, worth you money.

Summary: Unreal II; Another ho-hum bug hunt ????
Review: Reviews]

Unreal II: the awakening

Spiders! It's full of spiders!

There's a rule about spiders in games: They are the designer's way of saying: "I give up. I have run out of ideas." Strangely, that feeling permeates all of Unreal II: The Awakening, a game so eagerly anticipated that even the editors at Maximum PC were quivering like hummingbirds as they waited to lay their mitts on a copy. Sadly, now, after having actually played the game, their hummingbird wings have slowed to a dead stop. "We waited for this?" is the question on everyone's lips.

Unreal II has an amazing degree of polish. It's slick, it's gorgeous, and it has one or two breakout moments. But our sustained impression over the course of a meager 12-odd hours of gameplay is one of profound familiarity and undeniable disappointment. Unreal II is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a bad game. It is, however, a crushingly dissatisfying one.

So how can a "not bad game" warrant a mere 6 verdict? The problem lies in a burden of expectations, and while Epic/Legend may cry foul, this burden is the inevitable byproduct of five-odd years of unrelenting hype. The first Unreal was a watershed title. When gamers emerged into that open space, with the waterfall in the distance and the critters hopping about, they entered a new era in gaming. That the rest of Unreal never quite lived up to the first scene's promise-that it resorted to standard run-n-gun clichés-was never that big a problem. It was good, old-school action gaming. It pulled the plow.

Unreal II is sort of like the first game, but without the shock value of the waterfall. We already know how good games can look. But we also expect more from our action games in the wake of many clever, well-scripted titles (quite a few of which were made using the original Unreal engine). The really odd thing about Unreal II is that its meager narrative was created by a team of people with proven track records. The script is by Bob Bates, president of Legend and standard-bearer for the puzzle adventure game. The co-designers are Glen Dahlgren and Mike Verdu, whose Wheel of Time is one of the neglected masterpieces of late-1990s action gaming. It's got more interesting events, people, locations, and content in a single level than you'll find in all of Unreal II.

All of this makes Unreal II dreadfully difficult to evaluate. Nothing in it immediately reeks. Everything looks good. There are plenty of enemies. The pacing is decent. The levels are mostly good, but none stand out as classics. The weapons are almost pathologically generic: pistol, assault rifle, shotgun, rocket launcher, grenade launcher, flame-thrower, big gun, sniper rifle, and shock lance. Seriously: a shock lance? Please. That's just so... 1993. All of these weapons are perfectly functional and effectively animated, but they bring nothing to the table but old memories. Probably the weakest element of the game is the flaccid monster design, which ranges from seen-it (the skarrj) to what-is-it? Plus, there are those spiders. Grrrr.

But perhaps the most catastrophic failing of Unreal II is its almost nonexistent shelf life. Not only is it short, but it has no multiplayer component whatsoever, guaranteeing it a quick trip through Add/Remove Programs once the final curtain falls on the main mission. There are no skirmish levels, no nuthin'. Fracturing the franchise into Unreal and Unreal Tournament may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but removing all multiplay from Unreal II was a fatal error. A game lives on between versions because of multiplayer. Take that away, and a game is DOA. It also leaves you feeling pretty ripped off, since for [item price] you get very little.

For all its beauty and accomplishment, Unreal II is ultimately an empty game, coasting on its reputation rather than expanding the genre. It's enjoyable enough, but it will never be mistaken for a great game.

+ ORIGINALS: Stunning 3D engine. Solid, familiar run-n-gun action.

- SEQUELS: Short play time. Little in it is fresh or interesting. Levels, weapons, and creatures are average-which is unacceptable for a game of this magnitude.

MaximumPC verdict:

6

Summary: The game does not work!!! don't get it!
Review: The game does not even work! I have a good computer, but I cannot even install the game! Perhaps, there is something wrong with my CD. Anyone has suggestions what to do with the game!

Summary: Good, not great, but good
Review: This game is one of the ones that rely on graphics to get where it wants to go. I loved this game at first because I had been starved of a good FPS for about 2 months. It does have its downfalls of course, it is way to short, I beat it in just 8 hours and there is no multiplayer support. It is a good game to play but you should probably just rent it and then you will probably have beaten it and moved on to the next one. It has some very cool weapons including the Assualt Rifle which is based on the XM-29. This game is very linear, but has an interesting plot and what I feel is a good storyline. The interaction between you and the marines is good although it is only on 2 missions, you can order marines to guard certian places and that was a good bonus to the game. Aida the ulta hot female (for a game) is there for breifings, and remarks between her and you break up the game a little. I got this game for 10 bucks so I didnt expect much but I feel it was worth it. My comp isnt the best (750Mhz, 14GB HD, 520RAM, Nvidia TNT2 gfxcard) but with some tweaking I got this to run with medium and high settings. But did take a moderetely large chunk out of my hard drive. 3GB and demanding requirements influenced my buy, but dont think much about them, you can't run at tops but it still works well. This game would've been one of the better games out there if it was a little longer or had multiplayer support. You can make your own levels, however there are a ton of bugs in the editor software so whenever you make a change there is usually something that crashes your comp so you lose it all. All in all this is a good game and is worth [a small amount of money]. Good interaction between you and the actors as well as superb graphics makes this game a tasty looking treat but the shortness as well as the high price for the graphics can be called into question.

Summary: A bit of a disappointment
Review: I loved the original unreal game. I was intense, being hunted by the skarj and the wandering through strange temples, etc. My only complaint were the strange guns. So I came back to get this title as I thought it much also be just as good. I must say I was a little disappointed. The graphics are good especially when the game starts out, but after that there is nothing spectacular to write about. The guns have improved a bit and seem a bit more realistic - that i liked. My biggest problem was the plot of the game. First of all the game was very short - i finished it in about 48 hours. The first unreal took me a while to finish. The levels were interesting but many of the levels felt canned - like there were too many 'defend the flag' type levels where you just stand there and hold off creatures. I thought that it didnt have the interest of the first unreal where exploration and strange surprises awaited the gamer. I agree with another post i read in that the game plot seem to lack imagination and it leaves you a little stale at the end. The other big drawback to this game is the lack of a multiplayer feature. If the single player was a bit dull it could have been made up for by some interesting multiplayer maps with the new weapons, etc. I guess that would take away from Unreal Tournament sales though.

Summary: Fun, for what it is
Review: It's not in the same league as deus ex or half-life, but it has some pretty good graphics, a decent story, and the fighting is pretty intense. Overall a good singleplayer experience, but too linear to be great.

Summary: Rocks!
Review: OK, it is a little linear as far as gameplay goes, but graphically it is the best out there.

I don't know where these reviews are coming from that say it doesn't look good. The only thing I can think of is the reviewers have weak boxes. It takes big hardware to run it right. I have a 2.8 P4C on intel 875, 900mhz fsb with 1gb pc3500, sata raid 0 and geforce 4 ti4200. It is stunning on this machine.

Graphics are noticably better than UT2003. Game play is a little slower than UT2003. He doesn't run as fast, but no lag and very high fps rates even at max rez. I think they slowed him down a bit purposefully so you can appreciate the graphics.

It is a nice combination of the all out frag fest of UT2003 and a storyline of a good role player. Storyline is good, NPCs are unbelievably detailed in their graphics.

It may get a little boring after the first run through the whole game since you don't have a lot of options with how the story unfolds, but if you want the latest and greatest in graphics, you can't beat it. This is how we all knew pc games could be with the right hardware. Step aside xbox. The future is bright. I bought tomb raider angel of darkness and this one at the same time. I wish I could return tomb raider. This one is a keeper

Bring on UT2004 and Doom3. I am so ready.
