Summary: What a game
Review: Attention Age of Empires lovers. Okay if you have played, conquered, and are now bored with the ease of Age of the Empires...you have met your match. Everything that frustrates you and bothers you about Age of Empires, has been corrected and or improved in Empire Earth. Although not released by the same company, the co-creator of Age of Empires also co-created Empire Earth. Here is the breakdown.

1) Age of Empires was too easy. Okay veteran AOE players know, all you have to do is mass produce Castles and certain units, and there is now stopping you. Not so with Empire Earth. There are far more units, and some units are not affected much by others. So if you like archers...watch out for swordsmen, if you like swordsmen, watch out for spearmen...and if you like spears watch out for archers...such is the game.

2) Age of the Empires was to limiting. With maximum amounts of 200 units it made things incredibly difficult to really do anything. How would you like a population cap of 1200 divided equally among the players involved...What that means is if you only have two players you get 600 units.

3)Age of Empires was too short. Playing a Deathmatch in Age of Empires things were far too easy. Moving up through the ages took only as long as it takes to build a building. Plus getting to the top age didn't take long at all. Well now there are a total of 16 ages...if you just push through to get to the top ages quickly, you will find yourself beaten. The computer is much more aggresive.

4) I will admit that the first thing that drew me to Empire Earth was the diversity in units that you could produce, although I will say that I prefer to have the game end before the nano-age...the one where humans are replaced by robots, and lasers are fired instead of bombs and bullets. But it's still cool to play when it's that intense.

Downsides.
You're right I wouldn't be being honest if I didn't not inlcude some downsides. Here it is.

1) For those just starting with strategy/sim games...don't buy this. There are a whole lot of things going on at the same time, and if you are not experienced you'll get frustrated and lose intrest in the game incredibly fast!

2) It is a memory hog!. If you are buying this game...save up and buy a memory upgrade at the same time. This game will use up ALL of your virtual memory in a hurry, unless you have alot to spare. In this day and age you can find 256 megs of ram for around 15-30 dollars, not only will it make the game enjoyable, but it will make everything on your pc run smoother.

All in all, the pros heavily outweight the cons...bottom line...buy the game!

Summary: A good try
Review: Empire earth attempts to be "age of empires" for all the ages. Spanning all of human history and introducing some interesting innovations to RTS game design, EE is a lot of fun, but is ultimatley not the great game it could have been.

Graphically EE is a mixture of good and bad. At times the true 3d graphics will make you go "wow that looks really great". But zoom in all the way, and you might be left staring at a pixelated monstrosity. All in all, graphics are good though, and beingtrue 3d means it can be 3d accelorated... unlike AOE2.

Sound in the game is for the most part well done, though not great. like most RTS games, your soldier's responses get repeatative and annoying after a while. The sound effects of battle are pretty good, and include some nice touches, like the thundering feel of elephants walking, or the battle sounds that add background cries and sword clashed to add to the atmosphere.

Gameplay is the problem. The game is big, and the relationships between the units, is a little too simple. The rock-paper-scissors relationship is too sharp. If your enemy builds all one type, you counter with the appropriate response and you'll win. Hidden attack multipliers also make the game more complicated, while leaving you wondering HOW you lost your last battle. There is little in the way of tactics in the game aside from some minor enhancements in the game. While it is more strategy focused than preceding titles in the genre, it is still not realistic in many ways. Unlike the "total war" series, empire earth doesnt take into account routing, flank attacks, fatigue, morale, ammo, etc. That aside, it does offer some interesting new ideas. Barbarians can walk trough trees, and snipers are invisible from a distance. Morale is present, but only in a defender's advantage sort of way. If yu're not looking for meticulous realism, this wont bother you a bit. For me though... the typical RTS formula of the genre is becoming old, simplistic and obsolete. (The total war series really changed my wants in a strategy game).

however, empire earth is the ultimate RTS for those who are hooked on the fast paced action oriented formula of the industry. There is a lot here for such fans, everything from the stone age to the mech warriors of the future. The game's progression of the ages however is shaky... the changes are sometimes not subtle or realistic enough to truly be played all the way through. The game also shoots for fast paced action, but sometimes it's a bit too fast paced. While the game tries to curb rushing... you're still not going to be rewarded for a meticulously planned assault... your clicking speed and memorization of unit counter types is going to determine your success.

The AI is perhaps the biggest flaw. It's challenging yes... BUT CHEAP! The AI magically knows what troops you are building and builds the apropriate counters. I have had a game that I just could not win nor loose because I got to a point where no matter what I did the AI would just come with the correct counter. Annoying to say the least. If it beat me on a tactical or strategic level that'd be fine... but for me to be locked into a war of attrition simply because the computer "cheats"... grrrr.

All in all, you'll really like this game if you're an RTS nut. If you're getting tired of the genre and want something fresh and innovative?... look at the total war series, or perhaps the recently released "rise of nations".

Summary: Great fun, but with a few concerns.
Review: First of all, this is a fun game! Playing against the computer is actually challenging if you set difficulty to "hard". If you typically play RTS games against the computer rather than against other people, this is the game for you. If you want to move up from "Command & Conquer", this is for you. And, if you want a great deal, you can't miss at this price.

I deducted one star due to the combined effect of the following:

1. I play this game on what was a high-end Windows 98 machine when It was new. The game has been a little unstable, actually dissapparing in a blink and leaving me staring at my desktop! (The autosave is a great idea!) I recommend a newer computer, even though the box says Windows 98. I shudder to think of what happens to people who run this on the minimal recommended system.

2. When I quit out of the game, I am forced to wait for several minutes in front of a black screen while my machine calculates game statistics. At first I though the machine had locked up and I did a hard reboot. I wish I had the option of just quitting without calculating these statistics.

3. A lot of mouse-clicking confusion. Some common actions require all left clicks, and some require a combination of left and right clicks. I've played for hours and I still find myself trying several times to get something done becuase it seems so counter-intuitive.

4. On a moralistic note, I'm just a bit sad that seemingly the most effective way to win is to use your military to kill civilians. Civilians are the backbone of your civilization. The machine slaughters yours, and you end up using weapons, including nukes, on the enemy civilians to slow down your opponent. Just makes me feel a little uneasy. Good thing they're just objects in a computer's memory.

Summary: Great game set and such a deal!
Review: I bought Empire Earth and paid $39.95 and the add on was $29.95. This is such a great game; I thought it was worth every penny I paid. Now I see this whole game set is going for $14.50. It's a great game with many, many hours of play. Easy to learn. Buy it. It's a steal. Great Yule gift for the brats. Wyatt Kaldenberg

Summary: More outstanding empire building - thru the ages!
Review: I can still remember when I played the original AGE OF EMPIRES, wondering to myself if they would be able to make the same general strategy game using modern weaponry. As I loved the original AE, I held out hope that they would someday be able to pull it off.

Well, there is no reason to wonder anymore: our friends at SIERRA have done it. EMPIRE EARTH and its expansion set (both included in EE GOLD) takes us all the way from the dawn of mankind up thru the modern age and even into the future with spaceship and robotic battles and the like.

For myself, the most satisfying component of the game is being able to play with modern-day weapons. Build tanks, artillery and various troops for huge land battles. Build air-forces with fighters and bombers. Build navies with submarines, aircraft carriers, battleships and frigates.

Your civilians form the backbone of your military apparatus as they're the ones who collect the necessary resources (i.e.: wood, food, gold, stone, iron, etc) for your campaigns. You're the one in charge; how you utilize your resources is up to you. If you fail, you're the one who is accountable. If you are victorious, you're the one who deserves all the accolades and glory!

The most remarkable thing about the game for me is its symmetry. There is no one single "unstoppable" weapon in your arsenal. The most powerful weapon is the B-52, with which you can nuke your enemies. However, you had better protect it with great care; send it by itself on long-range bombing sorties and it's sure to be shot down by enemy fighters, anti-aircraft batteries or soldiers with STINGER missiles.

You may create TRIDENT submarines with powerful cruise missiles that can strike targets deep inland. However, these submarines are also the easiest for your enemies to sink: protect them at all costs!

Apache helicopters are devastating against tanks and other land targets, but are highly vulnerable to STINGERS and are downright helpless against enemy jet fighters. Jet fighters are susceptible to the fierce fire of anti-aircraft batteries. However, anti-aircraft batteries are hapless against tanks. All units have their strong points, and all units have their weaknesses, be they ground, sea or air.

If you like strategy games, I cannot recommend EE enough. If you like building armies, blowing stuff up and upgrading the prowess of your military, this is certainly the game for you. Just beware: it's about the most addictive game you will ever play!

Summary: What a piece of garbage!!!!!!
Review: I installed this program on our PC that runs all sorts of other games and it just locks up each time. I even upgraded our video card to no avail. I have more than the minimum requirements for hardware and still can not get this game to work. Biggest waste of money. Don't buy this unless you have the ultimate gaming PC like Alienware.

Summary: If you can beat Age of Empires this is for you
Review: I love Age of Empires but after a while it gets old, and easy to defeat. This game will not get old and is not easy to defeat even if you cheat. From the very beginning it is much harder that Age of Empires. By harder I dont mean its any less fun. This game will give you a challenge. This game is recommended to those Age of Empires fans who really want a challenge.
