Summary: Great Game, but eats even high end systems
Review: I've just completed the game, having been addidcted to it for 3 weeks. It has a great twist at the end, well worth seeing, and i had to remember iwas playing a game and not watching a great gangster movie. No game is perfect and this also has its negative points, which are the no save game option whenever you like, this means you might spend half an hour killing mobsters and sneak into a room only to get blown away with a single shot from a guy carrying a pump action shotgun, yes trust me you get cheesed off trying to get to the same point again. The other thing was that I thought I had a very powerful PC until i played this game, I run a microstar Nforce motherboard with an athlon 1800xp cpu, and a Gforce 4 TI400 graphics card (thats 128mb) and also 512 mb ddr ram, and 60gb 7800 rpm Hard drive, yet all this and i still found the frame rate quite jerky, especially whilst driving a vehicle. I did have all the options on high however, but GTA3 runs very smoothly with the options on very high.

All in all the positives far outweigh the negatives, and i would reccomend this game to anyone.

Summary: BADA BING! The Soprano's Meet 1930's Golden Age-Pre RICO!
Review: MADONN'! Mafia is a 3rd person, 3-D action game that takes place in a fictional city named Lost Heaven-a Chicagolike city complete with the "L" train, airport, banks, galleries, restaurants to get "gabagool", a harbor and lots of storefronts for money laundering, bootlegging & buttlegging (bootlegging cigs)!

You play Tommy Angelo, a mobbed up cab driver-cum-cugine. The game is about the daily life of a foot soldier from the depression era 1930's working the streets for your boss, "Don" Salieri.

The many missions you complete are tough enough to give any new associate the "agita" and make you "oobatz".

More than 60 vehicles are available to drive through the 12 square miles of the city. A Model T, a Roadster, delivery trucks and the like are all at your disposal. Stop your car and get out whenever and wherever you want. Don't be a jamook! Watch the cops or they will pinch you for stealing cars, running stop signs, and speeding, so be careful, INCONSPICUOUS and and most of all, keep the Omerta (vow of silence)!

Use weapons to shakedown, clip, whack, pop, or burn anyone your boss, underboss and capo have put out a contract out on. Hold up a bank, dump bodies and lots of other great mafia stuff! You get to use such weapons as a cool Tommy gun, a Smith & Wesson model 27 Magnum, a pump-action shotgun, a baseball bat to beat someone mezza morta (half-dead), and even throw some Molotov cocktails.

You lucky devil! You even have a "goomah". A hot chick named Sarah.

The graphics on this game are just completely amazing! The handling of the various vehicles is quite realistic, great practice sessions to start you out, shooting/re-loading is excellent, and overall storyline is the best!

I highly recommend this game! Especially if you are a fan of 3rd person play, "The Godfather" movies "Goodfellas" or the hit TV show, "The Sopranos".

Be a wiseguy, TODAY!

STUGOTS!

Happy Playing!

Summary: Beautiful....
Review: When I bought this game I wasn't quite sure that I was going to enjoy it. Reason being, that I heard it completely copied GTA3 and Vice City, which are both great games. I began to play this game and I was amazed. Let's begin with the graphics. Jesus Christ! They're amazing. People's expressions and movments are totaly fluid and life-like. The voice acting is great, not mellowdramatic or overdone in any way. The game it self. Perfect! You play as Tommey Angelou a cab driver who accsidently gets wound up in the Mafia of Chicago(im guessing the location). The plot is simply amazing. The end is incredible. It's literaly like playing a movie. All in all, this game is a masterpiece, my favorite game of all time, and one of the best games made so far. This game is rated M due to sexsual references, violence, blood, and language.

Summary: This game is not "trying" to be GTA...
Review: Some of these reviews are rather lame, with people wishing for GTA-like handling on the cars, and neverending ammo supplies. Let me tell you what this game IS.

This game is a mafia-style adventure game set in the 1930's. THE 1930'S!!!! What, do you expect to see a Dodge Viper sitting around??? Of course the cars are slow and handle like boats. The freakin' automobile was just invented like 30 years ago! The guns are very realistic, except it should probably take a little LONGER to reload some of the revolvers. I fire revolvers, and unless you've got tons of quick loads in your pocket, 3 seconds isn't going to cut it! Aside from that, the reloading times become part of the strategy. Oh yeah, and don't reload prematurely. Just like in real life, if you reload while there are still rounds in the mag, you're going to lose those mags. (I wish Counter-Strike did that.)

No in-game map: HIT TAB while driving. POOF! In-Game map. Oh yeah, and on the back of that nifty poster they included in the box, it's <gasp> ANOTHER MAP!

Can't skip cutscenes. Well, first, unless you've seen them before, I wouldn't recommend skipping them. They add a LOT to the story. Second, did you even try to skip the cutscenes? What did you do, sit and yell, "STOP" at your computer monitor?? The Enter key works fine for me, and others have reported the space bar.

"The cops suck." What? You're mad because you got pulled over for going over the speed limit? My biggest gripe about most games is that the cops see you driving a million miles an hour, running red lights, and wrecking into other cars, and they do NOTHING. I absolutely love the challenge of stealing a car, and then getting it back to Salieri's Bar quickly while trying to avoid the cops! The cops in no way behave like they have "GPS and satellites." Just yesterday, I ran into another car in front of a cop. Because I fled the scene, they chased me. However, I was in a faster car, so I was able to outrun them. I was doing fine until another cop saw me. (They had something called Radio back then..."Calling all cars. Be on the lookout for a man in a yellow race automobile.") I changed cars when I was out of sight of the cops, and drove right by another cop and nothing happened. They were looking for a guy in a yellow automobile, and weren't expecting a guy in a green Bolt Fordor. :)

This game is trying to be true to the time period, people. Don't expect Fast and the Furious, and don't complain when you don't get it.

This game is spectacular, however, like some have said, it's a resource hog. I've got an AMD XP 2700+ with a 128MB ATI Radeon 9600 Pro and 1Gig of RAM. It runs great on my system, and is a fine game. I give it 5 stars, and if you've got the hardware, it's worth the money you can spend on it! At the time of this writing, I paid $29.99 for this, and it's well worth it.

Summary: Believe the hype. A Classic.
Review: Okay, most of you have read all the reviews, so I will skip telling you the plot of the game and get to addressing complaints about the game.

1)No Save-at-anytime feature: Yes, this can be a little annoying, but have really only had to replay sequences a few times at most(with the exception of the racing mission, which took many tries, but supposedly the patch addresses this difficulty).

2)Can't skip cutscenes: What gave anyone this idea? Press the spacebar...you know the big, long key at the bottom of the keyboard?!

3)Cars are too slow: It is the 30's people! Try to take in the feel of the era and get GTA out of your head.

4)Gunfights aren't fun with reloading issues/losing unused ammo: This is ridiculous, in my opinion. The gunfights are one of the best parts of this game. Conserving ammo and knowing when to fire are a key element to playing this game and enjoying it. It is a thrill to be down to a few rounds of ammo with one enemy left. Again, get the GTA 3000 round chain-gun mentality out of this game.

5)A.I. is bad for both enemies and friendly NPC's: I have found this to be true for the enemies. Sometimes they have their backs to you aiming the opposite way and sometimes they hunt you right down to your hiding spot with a double-barreled sawed-off shotgun and splatter you before you know what happened. I have never had issues with friendly characters, though. A.I. is an issue in so many games and I just try to live with it.

This game is like playing and starring in a very, very good gangster movie. The story is spectacular. The voice acting is great. The game environment is top-notch. The gameplay is what it should be. This is one of the best.

Summary: Tedious and annoying
Review: A note to game developers everywhere. It's possible to create a challenging game that does not involve intensely annoying obstacles. Rule #1: all games should have a quick save option at any point in the game. No one enjoys going over the same mission over and over to get it right. Mafia only saves at the end of a mission or important task--or not nearly enough! This alone makes me want to pitch the whole mess. Rule #2: excessive amounts of driving around and map reading with old jalopy cars with extremely poor handling and dealing with other stupid drivers on the road is no fun attall! Way too much driving required. I drive enough to and from work 5x a week and deal with inconsiderate idiots on the road daily. I don't need it in a game I want to be a diversion from the grind of daily life.

If there were workable cheats available for this game it might be bearable. I would like to finish it, but only with access to cheats that actually work. I play games for enjoyment, not torture. I've searched the internet several times for cheats, and none of them work as described. A real disappointing game that didn't have to be.

Summary: Don't believe the hype
Review: As a diehard GTA3/Vice City fan, this game is not anywhere close to being as good as GTA3. Actually, it's not even as good as the severely-flawed-but-good The Getaway. Since I don't have time and I want to educate people who are interested in it but want to know the REAL DEAL, here's the breakdown:

PROS:
* Animation
* Voice acting
* Storyline
* Some of the shootouts are REALLY good

CONS:
* The cars are just awful (FYI-I am not a car fanatic) -- they don't handle well and the back end has this irritating habit of sliding as if it's on ice -- INFURIATING! Even the fast cars have the same bad handling problem (I mean, did the developers forget that we use a keyboard and mouse?)
* any mission using fists or melee weapons (ie. bats, knives) -- the developers obviously spent more time recreating a lifelike city versus making sure that the gameplay was good -- honestly? LAUGHABLY BAD!
* any mission where you have to bring along Paulie -- personally, I'm surprised this guy has survived this long without the main character -- he's an idiot! The developers should have notched up his AI because making sure that he doesn't die is frustrating
* this game is just plain boring -- all you do is drive to the beginning of the mission and then you drive to the end of the mission (too few interesting shootouts and too much driving) -- MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GO OVER 40 MPH! (YAWN!)
* not to forget, the police are awful in this game! Case in point, say you speed or run a red light, and if you can't shake the cops, then every single cop in the game comes after you! FOR SPEEDING! Not just that, even cops walking a beat can recognize you while you're inside a moving vehicle! Whassup?! Cops in the 1930s have GPS and cell phones so that they are instantly notified of your misdoings? COMMONE! Also, the cops can recognize you (not only from 3 blocks away) if you switch ten different cars to lose them, they still know where you are. Well, I know the answer, the developers spent more time recreating the city than improving the behavior of the police.
* there is absolutely nothing to do in this city except for the missions -- no side missions, no hidden packages, nada, zip.
* the weapons in this game are standard weapons in a shooter -- on top of the fact that this game looks stupid when you're in a shootout and both people in the shootout have to spend forty seconds reloading -- that's all you see, two dimwits reloading (exciting stuff developers) saying "As soon as I do this, you are a dead man"

Wish somebody would've told me this stuff before I bought it.

Summary: The don sends his regards
Review: Mafia takes you through the life of one man as he goes from a taxi driver to one of the don's top men. Mafia game play allows you to do many different things. From racing on a track, to drivebys, and foot missions mafia includes many different aspects to the game play. The game music is adequate and there is a few good tracks included as main themes but much of the music does get repetitive. This game requires a good speed computer. Check exact specifications, however on my 1.3gz computer there was still slow down during some of the heavier gunfights. (There are graphic change options to help with this) Mafia also includes an very close attention to detail, which I found quite impressive. Perhaps the three most important things about mafia you should know is that, first of all, much of the game you will be required to drive around. This can get quite boring, especially in the beginning when there is the most driving and the slowest cars. Toward the end of the game the cars become faster and many of the missions are shorter in distance. Nevertheless, it can get boring. Second of all, and the biggest problem with the game is the absurdly hard difficulty. There is no difficulty level change, except for one mission. It's not that I don't like games that are difficult but rather I don't like it when I have to play a mission and to beat it know the best position to kill every person in the area. That means a very long trail and error. There was one mission I must have done over 40 times. While some missions can be beaten easily much of the games missions are just to difficult. Lastly I need to mention the games amazing storyline. I find it very difficult to find a game with a good story line, even in RPGs. Even the ending is great, and made me glad that I did finish the game. Overall, I feel Mafia is a great game but the difficulty and driving missions hurt the game badly. I could even deal with the driving but the difficulty can get outrageous. Even so, you can beat the game with a lot of patience. Mafia is long in length, giving plenty of play time and storyline. Sadly, it does not offer a feature to watch the story line alone after the game completion. It does however offer free ride modes and missions for more game play once the actual game is completed. In the end, I would have to recommend the game. It's storyline is too great to do otherwise.

Summary: Could this be the greatest gangster game ever made?...
Review: Mafia is a gangster masterpiece. This third-person 3-D action game takes place in a fictional city named Lost Heaven--a cross between New York and Chicago--and is about the daily life of a gangster from the '30s. More than 60 vehicles are available to drive through the 12 miles of environment; stop your car and get out whenever and wherever your want. Use weapons such as a Tommy gun, a Smith & Wesson model 27 Magnum, a pump-action shotgun, a baseball bat, or Molotov cocktails. Seven multiplayer modes are available via LAN or over the Internet, including Deathmatch and Capture the Flag.
