Summary: Good Ideas... poor implementation
Review: ... Frankly, this program stinks. I wish I had read the gamespot review before wasting my money on it.

Poor AI engine (troops can't self-navigate around anything)

Poor Strategy (can't coordinate troops)

Poor controls (guys... hot keys to get to HQ would be nice!!!)

and the game play is sporadic (processor speeds up or gets hung on moving some troop around the field)

Don't buy it. Period.

Summary: The new standard in combat sims
Review: As a member of the Armed forces, this is the most realistic combat sim I have seen so far. It is even better than the Close Combat series.

Summary: Great Game
Review: Buy this if you like RTS games! There is nothing like strafing soldiers with an A-10, or firing a nuke into an enemy base. Plus, you get to fight the terrorists! Just what we need these days.

Summary: REAL POOR: Buy World War III: Black Gold instead!
Review: Don't let the cover and ads for this game fool you, Real War is really poor as real time strategy (RTS) games go. Even though it is advertised as being based on a Joint Chiefs of Staff training game, Simon and Schuster Interactive has put out a highly inaccurate game with poor replay value. The most intriguing part of this game is its storyline, an all-too current battle of America versus terrorists. That's where the comparison stops. Unlike the Al-Qaeda, the Real War's evil-doer's, Independent Liberation Army, have access to Tomahawk missile launching Cruisers, Attack Aircraft Carriers, and seemingly limitless ground assets of moderate complexity.
The saving grace for this game is its interface. It is easy to zoom in and out to keep track of you units. This game is best enjoyed by your seven-year old nephew who does not have a grasp of the destuctiveness of modern weapons. Case in pont, it is entertaining watching an infantry unit sprint Carl Lewis-like in the open past a Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) with .50 caliber machine firing away. The infantryman will typically last 20-30 seconds. Moreover, tanks blast away at each other often sustaining more than three or four direct hits before there armor gives way. Lastly, a missile from a cruiser will hit a helicopter or plane and do only moderate damage. The weapons effects are higly innacurate and remove all doubt as to the overall quality of this game.
Sadly, Red Alert is still the most accurate game at combining joint land, sea, and air units. However, if you wish for an incredible game of ground combat, without infantry, your best bet is JoWood's excellent production World War III: Black Gold.

Summary: Good but not great
Review: First off all, I would like to commend SSI for attempting to create a game that is coincendtially related to today's events with bin Laden et al. But these are not terrorists like Al Queda. Substitute terrorists with Iraq or Russia and the game title will be more accurate. True they use use current military (late 80's to early 90's), but that is where the game drops off. As much time as they spent into the detail of the game (great graphics and no useless resource gathering), they forgot to place intelligence into the opponent. Numerous times, I can build a couple of jammers and launch a tomhawk missle attack into their base, airdrop some commando's and the mission is over in about 10 minutes (after I got the needed resources). The enemy attacks you in a lemmings fashion, absolutely no coordination. However, in light of today's world, I love dropping nukes on the terrorists as our boys are in the field mopping up the scum. Good game to get you in the patriotic mood.

Summary: Unreal War
Review: For those who are seeking a beer and pretzels, blow 'em up computer game, Real War may be for you. For those who purchased the game based on the publisher's claims of being based on "official Joint Chiefs of Staff training game," you are going to be both disappointed and out $40.00. There is no realism in this game at all. Everything is at an abstract scale and gameplay is designed to be perfectly balanced with no consideration given to overall effectiveness of individual weapon systems. Also, as someone else mentioned, you basically just have to outbuild the opponent and then use sacrifical human wave attacks until only one of you is left standing. I did not enjoy it and would not recommend it.

Summary: A Good Game To Add To your Real Time Stradegy Games
Review: Get this if you like Time Stradegy Games, Military, and good games.

Summary: a little disappointing
Review: Given that this game is "based" on the military simulation, I thought it would be a pretty cool game. Unfortunately, I was wrong. It didn't live up to my expectations. Once you figure out how and what units to build, it becomes trivial to conquer the enemy. In several days I had conquered all of the missions except one. Skirmishes got boring.

On the plus side, this game features remarkably good graphics. Seeing your attack helicopters unloading missiles, and terrorists/infantry units doing back flips when hit with artillery is kind of fulfilling given today's current events.

This game does have some limitations, though.

Units tend to get stuck, and give up when you order them to a point across the terrain. If any obstacles are in their path, you sometimes have to guide them. I found the hovercrafts (which can carry heavy vehicles across water) especially difficult to control. When tasked with loading vehicles, sometimes they just wander off.

There are limitations on what you can build, and it isn't clearly documented what units or buildings are prerequisites for building other units. I found out through trial and error.

In any event, I expected more.

Summary: One of the Top PC Games of the Year!!
Review: How do you know when a game is addictive? When your alarm clock rings to wake you up for work and you're still bombing the heck out of the opposition! Real War is a real-time strategy game based on the weaponry available to the US military. As a bit of a combat buff, I was admittedly skeptical at first. Afterall, most combat sims involve either futuristic weapons or crude armaments. But, Real War sated my appetite for more realistic battle conditions and situations. Online playing ability for up to four people is an added bonus. Check this game out!

Summary: Real Easy
Review: I bought this title because I love RTS games, and especially when you get into modern warfare. The main problem I have with this game is that it is only difficult (even on the hard level) for the first stages of the game. Basically, build a bunch of planes, bomb enemy buildings, then spend the rest of your time trying to chase and blow up enemy units that run around the map until you win. Many times there wasn't a need for me to use ground troops to invade the enemy. It's a good game for a weekend of use. Bought on a Friday, by Sunday evening I had conquered it.
