Summary: Less than the original but worthwhile
Review: Legends of Aranna is far more open-ended than the original and rewards for accomplishing quests are much less significant limited. The new goodies and characters are a plus, but there is a feeling of less involvement by the player as the AI more or less takes over in fights. I liked the game and recommend it, but it is definitely a lesser work than the original.

Summary: Beautiful Game
Review: Legends of Aranna is very similar in gameplay to DS I with some significant improvements -- mainly in the management of inventory and party members.

Bottom line for me is that they've created a beautiful world that I enjoy spending time in. Really immersive environment with gorgeous lighting and spell effects, great music, and a clever gameplay interface.

Not a perfect game, but if you're at all into RPG's it's definitely worth a look.

Summary: A great game on many levels
Review: Ok, first off, let me defuse a few misconceptions about DS: Many people find it boring because you just gather stuff and party members and walk up to creatures and let the computer take over. This is true, but only with the default settings. There is a control panel that lets you adjust this behavior in many ways. You can play it the default way or all-manual (very hard to do) or any number of ways in-between.

Now then, on to the bad: The UI can be hard to control. Whenever you are in a tight area, the camera wants to move into a safe position, so as soon as you move the mouse away from the edge of the screen, the camera "bobs up" to look down at your character(s). This can really throw off your ability to manage the character(s). Also, the excitement of doing something new is often tainted by the fact that it's a thin modification of the previous steps. I like the cut-scenes and the puzzles, I just wish there were more of them.

Ok, so the good: The AI players make life a lot easier, and once you get the hang of managing the AI's settings this game can be a joy. Also, there are tons of ways to play and strategies that you can use. The magic system alone lets you play the game in dozens of different ways. The weapons and armor are just complex enough (just a bit more than Diablo) to make you think about how you want to equip your characters. It's often a hard choice, and I like that in a video game.... your milage may vary. Creatures have various advantages and disadvantages over you, and you need to figure out each one to know how to attack. Overall, it's a very good game, but not one for people who just want to plow forward and finish in a few days (you could, but you would miss a lot and the game would not be as fun).

PS: This review is actually for the basic game, not the expansion, but I'm mostly responding to other points that people have made that are the same for either or both.

Summary: Great Expansion
Review: The most important thing about this "expansion" is that it includes the original full version of Dungeon Siege and together for a lower price than the standalone version of Dungeon Siege when it was first released. So if you're a RPG fan and haven't tried this yet, now is a good time. Dungeon Siege 2 is a few months down the road. The expansion pack allows any or all of your "heroes" to carry a "backpack" now that permits you to carry even more items than before. Another beast similar to the packmule can carry additional stuff for you as before, but can fight and defend itself like a regular character. There are more items to find and use as well as more new and old enemies to fight and new places to explore. One gripe I have is some items are hard to find in the areas with vegetation. Another problem is when your heroes are fighting. They tend to take the initiative and fight head on but you may need to keep their inventory windows open to manage their health and mana potions to make sure they have enough until they defeat the enemy. This can get confusing. However, these are really trivial when compared to the fun of embarking on a "Lord of the Rings"-like quest with your virtual heroes.

Summary: Nice hack-n-slash
Review: This game is worth the low amount of money that it costs. Dungeon Siege is a dungeon-crawling (hence the title) hack-n-slash game like Diablo II, but the 3D enginge and party system is pretty nice. The game isn't as engrossing as Diablo II, with no arrows (bows just shoot), no skill system, a kind of weak magic system, and an "eh" storyline. However, the game is still pretty entertaining, and since the expansion pack includes the original, for only around $20, it's really worth a look. If you like games such as Diablo II, Lionheart, and Icewind Dale, check this game out. Just beware it isn't as engrossing or impressive as those other hack-n-slashers.

Summary: great game
Review: This is the most time I've spent playing a game in years! Most games bore me almost immediately, but Dungeon Siege is one of my favorites.

I can't wait for DSII to come out!

Summary: disappointed
Review: Unfortunately this game is rated as working on the XP. The expansion does work on the XP. And is very good. The reason I don't rate the game higher is that the origional Dungeon Seige starts working, but then around the mid point it crashes. It replaces the screen with squares of green. Once they appear, nothing can be done. I E-mailed Microsoft and the developers and they insisted that I just had to erase the game from the computer and then reload the game onto the computer. It then crashed the same way. I gave up after three crashes. But as I say, the expansion does work and is quite fun. The main game is also fun until it crashes.
