Summary: If it's not broke, don't fix it.
Review: I have been a Civ fan since the very beginning with version 1. Civ II was a great improvment over the first, particularly in graphics, and game speed. I was greatly anticipating Civ III, and have never been as satisfied with that version as Civ II. I won't even consider this expansion pack, as Civ III sits on the shelf collecting dust, while Civ II is played all the time.

Summary: They better make another one...
Review: I bought this game pretty much only for the online capabilities,
When it was brought home i was VASTLY dissapointed. The multiplayer didnt work for me nor most of the other people playing, It suffers severe lag and load times, and it didnt seem quite finished. I, myself, never made it to a Multiplayer game, so I wouldnt recomend buying this game to play with your friends. The addition of new units and civs was a nice touch but thats the only thing keeping this at 2 stars.

Summary: Nice addition to Civ3, but it could have been better
Review: I was excited to hear that Civ3 would be expanding with 'Play the World'. I loved the fact that there would be more civilizations to take on, new advancements and the like. They've streamlined some of the features, including alphabetizing your city list within the advisers.

My only complaint is that they really could have done more for this. I miss the ability to play as either a male or female leader from each civilization's history. That was a feature of Civ2 that is really missing here, and I hoped would be addressed with the expansion pack. The new advancements...well there aren't many. I was hoping to tackle some new challenges with this, but it didn't happen.

Really, this expansion seems to have been made almost solely for playing the multiplayer scenarios. I appreciate that a lot of people are into head-to-head competitions, but for those of us just trying to expand our personal best and explore scenarios on our own, it's lacking.

I only recommend this if you're REALLY into the CIV games and just have to see what other options are out there, and only then as long as you pay [cheap] for it. It's just not worth it for more. I give it 4 stars simply because it is fun, and I am REALLY into the CIV games. :-)

Summary: Could it get better? Oh it could, and it did!
Review: When I first bought Civ III, I was amazed at how in depth, challenging, and great the game was. I didn't think it could get any better! Eventually, though, I realized I had a desire to test my skills against real opponents - and I realized that without multiplayer, that couldn't be done.

So there was a void. And now it has been filled.

Not only have we been provided with awesome multiplayer options, including everyone's favorite Hotseat Mode, it tacked on a whole pile of new features as well. There are new game modes, like simultaneous and turnless games. There are new civilizations like the Koreans and (my favorite) the Carthaginians. New improvements like outposts and airfields are added to give your military that extra edge, and new units give your civilization even more possibilities. There's even a scenario editor to create scenarios of any type from almost any time.

To say the least, this expansion is well worth every penny and a must-have for the serious Civ gamer. To say the most, this is hands down one of the greatest additions to an already great series I've ever seen. Three cheers for Sid Meier and crew for Civ III: Play the World!

Summary: The best Civilization yet
Review: This expansion pack includes everything I've ever wanted in Civilization III. It adds new civilizations and new maps! You can set your maps to be historically correct to see what and how your favorite civilizations mastered their terrain and their neighbors. It adds new techonologies, wonders, units, everything. You cant play Civilization III without first buying this expansion pack because I can hardly imagine my playing experience without it.

Summary: improvents are rolling in
Review: well, i just got the game, i have read the manuel, and played the game. i basicly got it just for the single player options (after reading reviews here, and in magazines about the multiplayer gameplay)

the new units are evryone can build are ( )= (shields, resource needed, adm, tech/replaced unit): midieval infrantry [upgrades from swordsman] (40, iron, 4.2.1,feudalism), guerillas [upgrades from viking beserk, medievil infantry, and longbowmen](90, none, 6.6.1 replaceaball parts) {you may notice that it cost's the same, and is avalible at the same time as infranrty, the good is that because finally the mddle age units aren't compleatly worthless after gunpowder else , and it doesn't require rubber to biuld}.

the tribe specific units are: ansar warrior (arabs, 60, horses/iron, 4.2.3, knight);Beserk (scandinavia, 70, none, 6.2.1, longbowmen)[can attack from a ship, just like marnies]; conquistador (spanish, 70, 3.2.2, horses, explorer)[treats all terain as roads], gallic swordsman (celts, 50, iron, 3.2.2, swordsman), Hwach'a (Korea, 40, slatpeter, 0.0.1 {ADM} 12.1.1 {BRF), cannon) [note: the guide says that th Hwach'a can kill units, not just injur them like cannos and artillery, but i know for a fact that [at least in the unpatched version] it can't); Keshik (Mongols, 60, horses, 4.2.2, knights) [note: Keshik can cross mountins as if they were plains, but still have the mountin's 100% defense]; numadian mercenary(carthaginians, 30, none, 2.2.1, spearmen) ; sipahi (ottomans, 80, horses/saltpeter, 8.3.3, calvalry).

there are new options like cycling through cities in disorder, stacking units (having them move together). workers have new options like build airfields {a very good ability} (used as a ligitament airbase, need flight), outpost (gives view of 2 squares flat land, 3 hills, and 4 mountins, needs masonary), and radar tower (gives an 25% atk/25% def bonus to all units within 2 squares, needs radio) all must be built in either friendly, or neutral teritory (except for the radar tower, which must be built in your teritory), all use up worker like a colony would. the new city improvements are: civil defense (providess 50% defense from atk , in all settlements [not just towns, like walls] can only be built in a city with a barracks, radio), commercial dock (gives all water squares bonus commerece [can only be built in a city with a harbor, minuturization), and stock enchanges (prety much same as banks [only can be built in a city with a bank, the corperation) note: the wall street small wonder now requires 5 stock exchanges, not 5 banks, the great wonder is the internet (puts a reaserch lab on all cities on the same continent, something very good becuase now all cities on that contienent produce culture!)

Summary: A disappointment
Review: Well I must say I was expecting much more. I was never a very hard core civ fan, but do enjoy playing from time to time, so I decided I might as well check out the expansion pack. But after reading the manual and playing for a few hours I began to think, "I just wasted 30 bucks". Generally the problem was, it just didn't add enough, sure it has plenty of new civilizations, but what I really wanted was lots of new wonders and units. Instead it only had the new special civ units, one normal new unit, and one new wonder, with a few extra small gameplay features thrown in such as the ability to move units in a stack. However I still was not satisfied with judging my buy as a failure so I decide to try out the main focus of the expansion pack, online play. I entered to find only about 10 games, all of which were in progress except for one. I joined and it turned out to be one of those game types were everyone finishes turns at different times. I was quite unhappy with the way it turned out, everyone just rushing to finish their turns. After words I tried a normal turn based game, which took about 8 hours until I decided to quit.
Overall, the problem was, I just don't think civ 3 was meant to be online, and they just didn't add enough other features to make it interesting enough.

Summary: Overly Addictive, great expansion pack!
Review: Well, I loved this game, and the expansion really made it easy to play with others. I have lost literally 100's of fun-filled hours playing this game. Another expansion comes out next year, according to Atari, but this is spectacular on its own. The greatest turn-based strategy game, continues its streak. I highly recommend this to everyone.

Summary: Give and take
Review: If you like to customize your Civ games with custom maps, then this expansion offers lots of great new terrain for you to work with. Plain and simple, that is the only reason I got it. There are a few additional tweeks like scenerio building and some new units, but that's it.

If you plan on getting this game for multiplayer, then skip it, because it was like an after thought.

For anyone running PTW or just Civ3 on older systems, stick to smaller maps if you want the game to run faster. Newer systems do fine and I have to agree with another reviewer, if you are experiencing lag, then your machine needs upgrading. I have only experienced lag on the huge maps and not anything really annoying either. I'm running the game on a AMD 1 ghz machine.

As for lots of patches, there has only been 2 for Civ3 and one for PTW which mainly deals with multiplayer, which once again, is not really worth it. Releasing 3 patches is nothing compared to some other games.
