Summary: Your villagers need a patch
Review: Do not buy this game until you find out that there is a working patch that actually allows you to finish the game.

Summary: This is only half a game...
Review: Don't buy this game--as simple as that. There are bugs galore, and LH/EA have been promising a patch to fix the game for over two months now. Several promised features were "left out" of this version (ie. "We didn't have time to actually finish the game"), but have been promised in future downloads. If the patch is any symbol of what we can expect, these downloads will be available for Christmas 2002.< ... .

Summary: Just wait!!!!!
Review: Anyone who reads this, just take my advice and DO NOT buy the game right now. Depending on when you read this, check ... and see if there's a patch released for the game. If there is, then most likely you'll be happy with this game. If not, please leave it alone and come back to it later. Lionhead Studios put out an unfinished game and I don't think I've met anyone yet who has beat the game without having to start over due to game-stopping bugs. If you'd like more information, head over to ... and check out the Suggestions forum.

Summary: JUST IMAGINE BEING A GOD!
Review: FINALLY, a game that everyone can enjoy by choosing to be a good or an evil god, you DECIDE. That doesn't mean that if you decide to begin with being a good god you'll always stay good, you can change whenever you want to considering on what kind of behavior you have against your people. Cast wondrous miracles (such as lightning bolts, fireballs, ext.) to impress the people of the land and make them believe in you.Protect your worshipers using miracles against your enemies or use miracles punish them and making them suffer and be frightened of you. You'll also have the chance of obtaining your own creature (based on an animal) and teach him to do good deeds or evil deeds. You'll start with two adivors which are your own conscience (a good one and and evil one) until the game ends, they will help you on making a good choices or evil choices when the people ask for help (but remember you are the God, you decide what to do). What's also great about this game is that you can go online and battle your creature against your friends creature and see who it the best God. I recommend this game to everyone, it doesn't matter what kind of games you like, You will LOVE this game!!

Summary: Warning: This game can cause severe drooling...
Review: I really love this game. The graphics are great and the idea of getting to play God is really cool. I've read many of the Amazon reviews that dismiss the game for bugs and such. Well get over it, the patch that's going to fix most of the bugs is supposed to come out tomorrow (Monday June 4, 2001). It lessens the whole village mircromanagement by making the food desire based on actual hunger rather than having food in the store, etc. Iit also lessens the creature's desire to eat people, and it will fix bugs like the level 5 creature curse and the silver scrole quest bug with the blind woman and the potions. I absouletly love playing this game...and I don't even have a computer that will run it yet. I go over to my best friend's house to play, but it is soooo worth it.

Summary: Good Idea, Poor Execution
Review: This game admirably breaks from a lot of the god games inspired by Sim City and Civilization. Unfortunately the game designers tried to do far too much with the way the player interfaces with the game universe, gave inadequate in game tutorials and made the manual almost entirely useless. After many hours of gameplay I couldn't figure out how to build a sustained civilization without giving it constant attention. I would like to say more, but I just wanted to register my frustration with this game and hopefully dissuade others from buying it.

Summary: I really wanted to like it.
Review: I used to love Populous, and a friend told me about this new game by the same designer, so I had to try it.

Well, the graphics look great.

The second thing I notice is that you HAVE TO go through this really insipid introduction. You know; how to move, how to rotate the view, really elementary garbage like that. I find out from the website that you cannot skip this tutorial at all! What if you want to start over, try out a different creature, or (heaven forbid) play the game more than once? You have to waste an hour while wading through that silly intro again.

There has been some complaint about how you move around in the game. I can get used to that - I don't like it, and it is more difficult than it could have been, but it is not a deal breaker.

One reviewer pointed out that when he tried to reload a saved game his creature was not the same as when the game was saved. I wish I had this problem, because I can't even load a saved game. Every time I try, the game crashes. The website suggested a fix: disable internet play. So I tried this drastic measure, and it still didn't help. I tried to go back to the website, but it is down. It seems to be as buggy as the game itself.

I like micromanaged games (I wish whoever owns MicroProse now would make Master of Orion III), buy having to constantly baby-sit these brain dead villagers wears thin, even for me.

This is a clever and unique game, and I would play it despite the frustrating movement and tedious micromanagement - if I could get my saved games to load. (Please, please don't make me sit through the tutorial again!) As it is, the CD has set on my shelf unused for two weeks now. If the web site is ever back up, and they have a patch that will fix my problem, I may dust off the CD and give this game another chance - but it is doubtful that I will buy anything else from Lionhead Studios.

Summary: Bugs, bugs and oh, hang on... Another bug!
Review: Well, where do I start? I'm not going to sit here and tell youall that Black and White stinks and yada yada yada. Personally, I think that the whole idea behind the game is quite unique and innovative. Why the 1 star rating then? Because the game is so bug-ridden that it is (to many customers) virtually unplayable.

Lionhead has announced that they will release a patch fixing many of the known bugs within the game, however this patch was supposed to have been released on the 18th of May. On the 18th however, it was revealed that because EA staff had taken time out to go to E3, the patch would not be released until the coming Monday (the 21st).

So of course everyone's like "Yay! Only need to wait another few days and we'll be able to play the game!" and then on the 21st, we are told that because of some problems that were caused while fixing some Netherland cable bug, the patch would have to be post-poned for a further ten days.

By this stage Lionhead were starting to get some very harsh criticism (and rightly so) and then on the 31st, what do they tell us? The patch is finished and ready to go AFTER EA has signed it off. WHAT? Another delay!

Now, what's the fuss you might ask? Well, let me explain one of the bugs to you. In Black and White, you are able to teach your creature various miracles etc. However, there is a bug that causes your creature to forget everything he has learnt! Now, I want to make this clear: the creature is a BIG part of the game! If you're creature doesn't even remember what you spend hours teaching him, then what is the point of even playing?

Another very frustrating and disappointing bug, is the "Save-Crash". There is nothing worse than losing your ENTIRE saved game (not just the information since the last save but the entire saved game). Quite frankly, I would rather have my head placed under the wheel of a Mack truck.

As you can see, these bugs affect a huge area of the game, and are in no way small or irrelevant. Nor are they the kind of bugs that you can put up with.

My criticism of the game may seem a little harsh or exaggerated, but consider this: There are many systems on which the game won't even run! That's right, the game doesn't even start up.

To come to some kind of conclusion, if you are thinking of buying Black and White, then think again. If you still want to buy it after reading this review (from someone who has the game and knows from personal experience the feeling of losing hours of gameplay in the blink of an eye) then I suggest you go to the shop and buy the biggest fly-swat you can find, because the bugs in this game are far from being squished.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Good concept, bad implementation, terrible support
Review: The concept of the game is good. The replayability of it is non-existant though. You _HAVE_ to go through the tutorial whether it is the first time you are playing the game or not. You have to listen to the stupid advisor's prattle about how to move.

The support is aweful. I called lionhead yesterday and they told me that there was nothing I could do about getting a refund. They have delayed the patch so many times that it has been more than 14 days since I purchased the game, so my retail outlet won't take it back. The excuses that they have used time and time again for delaying the patch have been pathetic. Our developers are at E3. Some Dutch players won't be able to play over the internet. We have to QA it.

....

I will never buy another product from LionHead studios.

Summary: Bugs Galore
Review: While the game is a wonderful and innovative concept it has yet to be fully seen in action due to the numerous bugs within the game. Having complete the game I am now left with a tiny creature that while cute, certainly doesn't measure up to the massive giant I should have ended up with due to a major bug, so basically a waste of many hours game play. The game takes a huge amount of time in loading and saving and has a nasty habit of crashing on saves, corrupting your save files. These are just a few of the many and varied bugs within the game. All this is further aggrevated by the appalling support provided by Lionhead in their failure to provide a patch or to communicate honestly with those who have provided their support by purchasing the game. All in all if you're thinking of buying the game then I suggest you dont until Lionhead is more forthcoming with their patches.
