Rating: Summary: Stunning non-linear gameplay, leaves you wanting more. Review: At first, I didn't like the game because of how much I thought it was unrealistic, but when I gave it another shot, not only was it realistic, it was actually a very addicting game! Although, this game uses the dated Unreal engine, the graphics are still topnotch; the only downside is of the poor Direct3D coding, leaving you to use OpenGL as the API. Besides the graphics, the gameplay is the most important aspect. The game is non-linear, meaning it doesn't always go one way no matter what you do. In this game, what you do actually does outcome the ending of the game! An example, I walked into the ladies' bathroom. Usually if I would do this in any other game, nothing would happen, but afterwards the Boss told me that it is embarrasing to the company! Throughout the game, you have many choices to pick from. Whether it is during a conversation or entering a building with high security, they all have their advantages and disadvantages. If you have a character that is more of a sneaker, rather than a killer, it would be best to stay out of the front entrance and climb through the air ducts. If you are a killer, but don't want too much trouble, you might as well take the back door. The game is all built on you own decisions, something that attracts many gaming audiences. Every hardcore gamer has to play this, it is truely a milestone in the gaming community.
Rating: Summary: I'm hooked already Review: I bought this game as a pack in with my computer and after only two missions I'm hooked! The game requires a lot more than a fast finger--you need to THINK, sometimes a well tossed gas grenade does more good than an assault rifle. The mechanics are easy to pick up. There's also a plot that reads like a movie, I'm beginning to think that there's a mole in UNATCO(DON'T GIVE IT AWAY FOR ME!). I have the SDK and hope to do a few mods, but this game will keep me busy for at least the summer!
Rating: Summary: Don't read this yet, just buy the game! Review: Deus Ex Machina - A god introduced by means of a crane in ancient Greek and Roman drama to decide the final outcome. Buy Deus Ex. Right now. Play it. Lose yourself in it. Then, when you finish the game and marvel at its awesome gameplay, come back and read this review. Tell me whether or not you agree with how much I rave about this game. Because, I guarantee, you will not be disappointed...with the game, that is. Developed by ION Storm (yes, the same guys who pushed out DAIKATANA, but by a different team within the company), DEUS EX quickly redeems the honor smeared by ION's software marketing faux pas of its previous game. So, why is it so good? Yes, you've got a conspiracy theory in it (everything involving a human in present or near-future time revolves around them nowadays), you've got weapons (big deal), and it's 3D (what isn't ?). Well, it seems to me that 3D maps and eye candy just doesn't cut it anymore for gamers. What I see that captivates gamers to love or hate a game is a beautifully woven story, with continuity and characters or situations one loses oneself in. RPGs follow this model. Indeed, Deus Ex is almost like an RPG, giving you ways to enhance your character in several different ways. And, just like an RPG, a character follows, more or less, a specific path of development that allows them to become great at certain skills, while developing poorly in others. This provides for great replayability in the game, for one can choose different paths to follow, becoming either a goody-two-shoes, or a more shady character, in your quest to reach the end point. Speaking of different paths, this is one of those few 3D shooters where you can choose between not one, not two, but THREE different endings! Half-life sported two endings, but were cursory, and really, only one left any sort of accomplishment. Here, each path you choose, leading to its inevitable ending, reflects different societal choices and mindsets--beliefs maybe even you may harbor. Just for fun, when faced with the forks at which you choose your path, pick the one that most rips against your moral grain. Who knows? You might just see the justification of the outcome. So, in a nutshell, what makes this game so good? 1) The interesting mix of RPG, Puzzle, and 3D shooter, woven together to create an intriguing game. 2) The goth, futuristic story--a la The Sixth Day--with elements taken from the real world, that pulls you into the middle of the action. 3) The plethora of solutions to about any problem on any level--a tectical technique for any strategy--that makes for superb playability. 4) Great use of sound positioning and distance, so even a blind person can tell where the enemy is (with a four-speaker surround setup, of course). Okay, so Deus Ex sports many good points. Any bad ones? A couple. For one, the voice acting, delivered dead-panned and unemotionally by run-of-the-mill voice actors (they must have a generic pool for these things), detracts from the superb overall story and cutscenes. Another, the AI of the enemies leaves something to be desired. Though not rendering the game disarmingly easy, it's funny to see enemies react to a deafening shotgun blast, come running to investigate the ruckus, not see anyone (for you stealthily concealed yourself in the shadows), then, not seeing anything, go right back to what they were doing after 10 seconds (though they virtually trip over their dead comrade's body on the ground). Do these drawbacks ruin the game? Hardly. All the other good points more than make up for its shortfalls. So, again, if you haven't this game in your library...BUY IT NOW! 'Nuff said.
Rating: Summary: READ THIS FOR THE TRUTH ABOUT DEUS EX.... Review: The graphics in this game are great. It could have used a lot more work though. Here's what I hated about it (the CONs are what you really need to know, right?) 1.)The enemy AI.... I walked in front of some guard and he shot at me. I ran inside an office and hid on the other side of a desk. "Hmmm...must have been a rat?" Go figure. 2.)You and your brother Paul have that Euro trash style outfit with a terrible mono-tone voice. I thought I was in chemistry class all over again. 3.)The guns are a joke. No shooting through walls or doors. The pistol is the most powerful and easy to use. So the SMGs and the sniper rifle ... and make learning other weapons a waste. 4.)The AUGs should be automatic. You can't think to manually power them on and off at the right time while swimming or in gun fights. 5.)It's a futuristic ripoff of the X-Files. It would've been great if those above were fixed in a part 2 or something. If they'd add a FEAR factor in the game it would be even better. Once you're pumped up like the terminator, I don't see some rent-a-cop sticking around to fight you.
Rating: Summary: Great Story, Great Gamplay, Great Game Review: Deus Ex is a great story above all else. Lots of shooters promise a story, and deliver some silly tale about some scientist, "now go shoot things". But Deus Ex stands above that crowd and really delivers a great game. The pacing is just right, never revealing too much information with the action closely coupled. The story can really suck you in and encourages you to try out different things to accomplish a goal, another great feature of this game, you can solve most problems in way that suits your style. Additionally the online gameplay is just as exciting and offers some really unique twists (upgrades and skills). If you haven't played Deus Ex then you are missing out.
Rating: Summary: BEST GAME OF 2000 Review: great game. lots of different ways to do things.
Rating: Summary: Lost 2 months of productivity, but had a blast! Review: I am a Real Time Strategy (RTS) fan-Starcraft, WarCraft, Age of Empires. Deus Ex was the first game in the First Person Shooter genre I have tried. I was not dissapointed. This amazing game lets you play the way you want. Do you want to blast your way through every encounter, making each puzzle a battle? Build up your rifle and heavy weapon skills and enahncer your ballistic protection augmentations. Or would you rather sneak around, hacking the computers to open the doors instead of blowing them off their hinges? Build up your electronics skills, and choose the stealth augmentation. Or maybe you would rather swim... Every mission has multiple success paths, and several have multiple outcomes. The game has three endings, based on whether you trust the Illuminatii, the worldwide AI, or another group... I have to tell you, I loved this game. I got nothing done at work for two months because if it. Please don't tell the boss.
Rating: Summary: great story, action, and characters. Review: I am a big fan of FPS (first person shooters) and when i read about this game i thought back to half life, could this be another step up for this genre. After i played it i answered that question with two words Oh yeah! This game is the best action game there is and it's large enough, and challenging enough to keep you going for a while. I was playing this game for quite some time (a month and a half to be exact) before i got all the alternate routes figured out. It would've been shorter if work didn't intercede with my gaming time but i have to pay for my bills somehow right. The story involves two brothers, one being the veteran and the other being the rookie take a guess on which you'll be playing. Anyway you start off the game by wiping out the terroists that have taken the statue of libery. Now here's where this game sets it apart from most shooters. There are multiple ways to complete an objective either you can go in and kill everyone in the area or you can sneak by them and knock them out. I usually choose the second approach since it's more of a challenge that way rather than just start blowing things up, which gets old real fast. Once you complete your objectives you get a set number of experiance points which you can give to certain abilities such as sniping (my favorite) or other attributes like hacking or electronic bypassing. This gives the game maximum replayablity with all the choices you can make in the game, if you foul up a mission you continue on, you just change the attitudes of some characters you meet later. The only problem i have with this game is it has a slow start, but once you get past the first couple of misions it's a breeze the rest of the way, with a great story that twists and turns with every step you take, it's great gaming defintly a must have for any hardcore gamer.
Rating: Summary: Half-life, Undying, Ah... Deus Ex... now we're COOKIN'! Review: What can i say. The best game since halflife and even then HL beats it only by a fraction. Warren Spector takes every good aspect of HL, System Shock 2 (it's OBVIOUS predessesor), Thief and (maybe) MGS on the PlayStation and uses these to create the MOST complex, immersive and bloody brilliant RPG of all time that revolutionises computer gaming and takes it to new heights. This is a fascinating sci-fi adventure with complete player freedom, brilliant gameplay devices and a plot that's so good you'll never trust anyone again. Well done Eidos and Ion Storm. You deserve every last bit of the praise and attention you're getting. And for anyone not owning this, if you want a game that redefines the phrase "perfect" and "OH MY GOD!!!", buy this game. NOW.
Rating: Summary: RPG and FPS in one; a must own Review: If you are a big fan of Bladerunner and Half-Life, this game will be an absolute joy for you to play. The kicker is, even if you didn't like those games, what this game offers is one of the most interactive, involving, and intuitive environment of any game I have ever played. Perhaps the games most redeeming feature is the ability to tailor your character the way you want to play. If you want to be a hell-bent angel out to exact a measure of revenge for whatever reason, go ahead, get your weapons and start firing. If you want to be a slueth, you can, sneaking around undetected. Or you could be a champion of the people, always being Mr. Boy Scout, a la Jack Ryan from Tom Clancy Fame. Or you can make up your own, combining these elements or inventing your own. Since your character is bionic and will receive augmentations, there really is no limit on the type of player you create (and if you cheat, you can make a Super-Bionic man who can do anything). The story line is pretty compelling and will keep you addicted. While gamers of this genre will probably be able to guess what happens next (Or those who watch a lot of movies), it will keep you guessing in certain areas. A couple of complaints: The AI is not good. Not very good at all. The enemies in the game operate strictly on LOS (That's Line of Sight to all you youngin's out there) most of the time. Regardless of what the training operations tell you, the bad guys do not come unless they see you. They CAN hear you, but if they can't see you, you can hear them talk to themselves, saying things like "Must have been the wind" or something like that. You can throw things to avert their attention, and they'll rush to the sound, but again, if you stay behind them, you'll be ok. I'm looking forward to the Game of the Year Addition, because with it, you can create your own single player and multiplayer scenarios. That will make the game virtually limitless and will make the replay value skyrocket.
