Rating: Summary: One of the best games of all time Review: I don't normally waste my hard drive space on FPS or TPS games. I got a free copy of Tribes and deleted it, never liked the demo of Quake enough to get the game, and only somewhat enjoyed Wolfenstein and Doom. However, I decided to give Deus Ex a try after reading a review of it where my favorite author, Robert Anton Wilson, was mentioned (some of the background to the plot bears some similarity to the background of the plot in a few of his books). So, I downloaded the demo, and tried it out. The next day, I ordered the game from Amazon.com. I probably beat the demo about 5 times before it got here. The game just blew me away. A FPS with RPG elements? That was nice. A game that gives you 2-5 different ways to solve each problem? That was nicer. A game that gave you almost total control over the way you played it? That was awesome. An FPS with a plot? I couldn't believe it, but it's true. Deus Ex has an extremely good plot, at least as good as games like Starcraft and Rainbow Six, but far, far less linear. In Starcraft, you got one choice on how to take the plot - somewhere in the BW campaigns you had 2 ways to finish a mission, that led to the next mission being different. Afterwards, the game returned to normal. In Deus Ex, the way you play one mission can make some noticeable changes in the next. Keep your brother alive in the 'Ton, and he shows up a few more times during the game. At least 2-3 different places and times to kill most of the major adversaries in the game. 3 ways to end the game. Not to mention that every mission had a handful of ways to beat it. In the first mission, you could fight your way through the front doors into the ruins of the Statue of Liberty with your guns blazing. Or, you could go around back, climb some crates, and sneak past a lot of the guards. Or, you could go around part of the island, meet with an informer, and find out how to access their computer system so you could control turrets and take half their guards out without wasting ammo. In the Templar cathedral, you could blow the front doors open, climb a trellis and walk around on the roof, pick the locks, or wait for someone to come out a side door, kill them, and go through the door they opened. The only minor problem is that if you like to close doors behind you, there's one place in the sub base where you can get locked in.... not sure if they'll fix that in a patch or what. Oh well, I've still gotten countless hours of very enjoyable gaming out og it.
Rating: Summary: You have got to get this game Review: This is unlike any first person shooter I have ever seen. Not only do you get to use plasma rifles and full automatic shotguns in this game, but you get to use skills like hacking and lockpicking. It has a great storyline and an awesome hero. You also get to use things called augmentations which are upgrades so you can cloak, run and jump faster, see through walls, and all sorts of others things which you could never do in other games. You can even choose what you want to say to people. You should definetly get this game it is worth it. I cant wait for Deus ex 2 to come out.
Rating: Summary: UNDER-RATED GAME OF THE YEAR!! Review: I had a chance to get this game as a bootleg or a original, but this game is completely worth the original. I want to pay the creators to keep making games such as this. By far, this is one of the most quality games I've played. I read some reviewer complain about the graphics!! That is absurd! The graphics are not State-of-the-art, but they are still greater than many current games! I loved each and every aspect of the game. The playability could be improved so as to not be so confusing at first, but once you are comfortable with the keyboard, it is really fun. The game has a script that's better than many hollywood movies. The outcomes are variable!! Each decision could be vital to your performance. Overall, I would give this game "9.7 out of 10" The only thing I could complain about is the SOUND!! Oh, it is so repetitive and DARK!! By dark, I mean it puts a sort of irrational fear into you. The sound should be more uplifting and cheerful, but not too much or else it would sound cheesy. As far as bugs go, thee were a few minor glitches, but they were bearable. GO BUY IT!! YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID!!
Rating: Summary: One of the Greats Review: I bought Deus Ex and played through fully, and loved every minute of it. This is the best game I have played so far. Every thing about it is great. The only thing I disliked a little was the lack of ammo, but this game is still the best. The story line is the best ive heard in a game. Its not aliens take over the world, you job is kill them. The story is very enticing and the game revolves around it. The enemies as said by the amazon reviewer are stupid, not so! There not einstiens but they are smart. You cant walk right infront of one stand two inches pull out a gun and shoot him because you will die. You cant run up behind him 2 inches away and pull out a gun because he will hear you coming. You must sneak up behind him and kill him. Then you need to hide his body so no other enemies can see him and trigger and alarm. Also you can mold your character to fit what you want. He can be good with melee weapons or he can good with rifles and other firearms. There are many different ways to "aug" your character. As I said before you cant beat this game. Max payne is not better then this game.
Rating: Summary: best game ever Review: This game is my all-time favorite. Its one of the few games I could stand to play for longer than a week. The story is the strongest point of the game. The action is not bad either, but the story made me come back and back again. With many games (like Baldurs Gate) I got tired of the repetitive story as I got closer to the ending. Not so with Deus Ex. I got more excited with every enemy I killed, every person I spoke to. Every day I was more eager to play and see where the story would take me. The only drawback is the fact that you can't stay with UNATCO. It's simply a brilliant game with a great story and characters. The atmosphere is the best I've seen sofar. Especially HongKong was really cool. Cant wait for part II...
Rating: Summary: A real Game Review: I bought this game with some hesitation....and have never looked back. This game has intrigue as well as a great shooter. If you are looking to just go around and shoot things, this game is not for you. But if you want to actually have to use your brain and figure out ways to accomplish tasks, then buy this game. Especially at this price....
Rating: Summary: Bad voice acting? BAD VOICE ACTING??? Review: The person writing the editorial review claimed in his "cons" list that the game contained "bad voice acting." Hey man, you'd better get your Miracle-Ear (TM) checked! The voice acting is by far the best in any game yet. I have played Half Life, Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear, and Soldier of Fortune, and by far Deus Ex has the best, most professional voice acting I've ever seen in a game. He also mentioned that the enemy AI was bad. Not really. Enemies will work together and flee if the situation takes a turn for the worse.
Rating: Summary: The conspiracy game Review: This game almost scared me. If I wished to dominate the world, I would do it the manner the game describes. It may not be coincedental that a fictional(?) United Nations coalition. The plausability of the plot made it highly engrossing. Other than that, it is a good game. I notice that most of the people I have spoken to that complain that the game is too hard played it using firepower as their tactic, which is arguably the hardest way.
Rating: Summary: Better than Half Life or Tomb Raider Review: This game was the first shooter I had ever played. Boy, what a way to get started! Since finishing Deus Ex, I have tried Half Life, Tomb Raider, System Shock 2, and others. System Shock 2 is good (same developer as Deux Ex!), but the others don't measure up. Why? The others are just shoot, jump, explore, shoot. With Deus Ex, you have a great story, lots of options, different ways to finish a given level, and best of all, different skills to build in your character, just like a Role Playing Game (RPG). I played this game for three months part time. I wish I could find another as good as this.
Rating: Summary: Best game ever Review: Anybody that didn't like this game is [on drugs]. It has been about half a year since I finished playing and I still remember it like it was yesterday. At $19.99, just buy it, you won't be dissapointed. This game is the first that combines a good plot, decent voice acting, and the freedom to accomplish goals in multiple ways. It is the first time a game has been so immersive that I felt like I had taken on another identity. This game points to the future of entertainment. Becoming an active participant in a story is much more entertaining than watching a movie. Some day, somebody will figure out how to create a form of interactive entertainment like this that the general public won't label as a "game." When that happens, movies will be a thing of the past.
