Rating: Summary: What a shame. Review: The Good: Breathtaking graphics Beautiful ambience music Cool and very unique ship designs Overall a very nice and intriguing atmosphere Nice environment to chat in style with all the graphics and stuffThe Bad: Once you get over the initial wonder shock (and it won't take long) everything will start to look alike Takes forever to do anything Tedious and boring repetitive tasks You'll never reach the level of older players no matter how much you play because you train your skills in real time Conclusion: Great potential but in the end, (unless you buy it because you want a chat program with nice graphics and sounds) you will be left frustrated and disappointed. Eve is a game made to take a lot of time and that in itself is not bad. However, the problem here is that the eve-universe is just not happening. Sure it would be fun to go and combat other players but if you just arrived, you can hope to be at decent level in maybe 6 months and by then, of course, everyone else will be at a much higher level than you so you're still stuck in newbeeland. Often, eve can be much like the real world (and not in a positive way) in that you have to work hard to make a living. I would like a game that helps me escape the frustrations of everyday life, not augment them.
Rating: Summary: Great Game Review: First of all let me say that the learning curve on this game is very steep, if you take the time to give it a chance you will love this game. Its one of the most detailed games I have ever played. It starts off very slow, but it's what you make it, if you are lazy and have the intelligence of a peanut you will not like this game, as it requires quite a bit of work to be put in to reap the rewards it has to offer. It is a world in itself, you will make friends enemies etc... the graphics are also something to behold ... hope this helps ... don't let the people on here that tried it for a couple of days and couldn't figure it out scare you away ...
Rating: Summary: It thinks its all that... Review: This game sucks!!! I mean i could have better space combat in the spaceshuttle Endeavor! It has its wingtips cut off, machenery scrapped, engines dismanled, sitting on display at the smithsonian and has NO WEAPONS!!! There is no real concept, no reall action, no reall combat, and NO REAL PEOPLE WHO ARE HAPPY PLAYING IT!!!. EVEN THE STARBASES ARE DISAPOINTING!! THEY LOOK LIKE BASCET BALL STAIDIUMS EVEN ON THE INSIDE!!! Also the space shuttle has better responiveness. I have to wait about 2 minets between the point of moving the mouse and the point of ship movement!!! Its like buying incurance but in space combat form!!! IN reall time!!! It has good eyecandy, and cool looking spaceships, but thats all! I hate every single aspect of this game!!! Spacewar is much more fun than that horrible game and i really like to play it!! I don't know how anyone can enjoy EVE! I mean, i really would shut down the game studio that brought us this monstrosity if i had corpreat power.
Rating: Summary: Buggy Start but Maturing into the Most Awesome Space Game ev Review: The game was no doubt released a bit early, perhaps due to financial pressures or due to the publisher. So it had bugs. So what? Just about every MMO came out of the gate reeking with bugs including a few big titles lately. With a game of such magnitude and complexity it is bound to happen. Yet despite the complexity of it all, and EVE is much more complex than most, I find EVE to be above average in reliability. I have never seen a team of developers who would work consciously day and night to fix the game. I never had a developer mail me a response in any game at all if I had problems. EVE was the first time someone actually did. It's been three months now, and EVE has matured. As bugs are being fixed, more and more features are being added, bit by bit. Any MMO is a work in progress, so is EVE. As a game, this is a stunning achievement. The graphics and the art work are completely five star---they are difficult to surpass by any standard. The depth and freedom of this game is unparalleled, so much so I have never seen a game that has attained this level of "virtual life", being able to weave so fully, the illusion of a true fantasy. It really feels like you are in an alternative universe, one that has a life on its own. And that my friends is the true danger of EVE, since it is so addictive, and you can be truly lost into it. For now, I live a virtual life of a miner, a trader and a hunter. I found my home in a nice well located base, set amidst a picturesque star surrounded by a nebula. I mine the asteroids to pay my bills, but once in a while I go into a deep hunting expedition into the far stars, gathering junk, treasures and bounties from all the pirates I killed. I take my ore and my loot, recycle them into valuable minerals, and using factories and blueprints I acquired, I build weapons, drones and ammunition to sell and use as my own. As my wealth grows, so is my collection of ships. I choose to stay far from centers of conflict between factions and corporations, minding my own business, but preparing ominously for the day when greedy corporations and blood thirsty pirates decided to claim the rich belts as their own. And I will be ready. This is living the Ian M. Banks dreams. Or the Ben Bova dream I will not mince my words. As for now, this is the ultimate space game.
Rating: Summary: Great potential, uncertain future Review: I've been beta testing this game for a little over a week now, and I can only give it a mixed review. The Good: The graphics are simply the best ever for a space simulation much less a MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game), but you better not try to play with a system towards the bottom range of the requirements for that reason. It is incredibly realistic and huge. The economic and political model is fascinating, vast, and has great potential - I mean GREAT POTENTIAL. This game is really an economic and political simulation it just happens to be set in the vast reaches of space with futuristic technology. Finally this game is designed from day one for the player interaction with other players - both in cooperative and competitive modes. The Bad: Sometimes being realistic does not make for the best game. In real life space is vast and empty - a feeling that definitely comes across in this game. So far in the Beta tests it's too vast and too empty, with way too much time being devoted just going from point A to point B. Although the scenery is beautiful, one is more interested in getting to that solar system 10 stargate jumps away than in looking at another red dwarf with an eerie gas belt orbiting it during the 30 minutes the trip takes. Anyone looking for an interactive battle will be let down. The battle system is more akin to lock target, pick weapon, and wait and see who wins. The potential of the political and economic aspects are still just potential, either some of the aspects aren't usable yet or they rely so much on other players that they're easily rendered meaningless by lack of participation on the part of other players. Finally there are signifigant technical problems right now with lag and bugs going from the development servers to the beta servers. Ostensibly the required capapcity will be on hand and the bugs worked out by launch, but you never know. My advice is to wait and see how it's fairing a few months after launch before buying it. There's much potential for this to be a great game and just as much for it to flop out of the gate and never recover. I suspect many will buy it, and quit playing after their first free month is over. I wish CCP would delay the launch and make certain most of the features and technical problems are solved before going live.
Rating: Summary: Best game I have ever played Review: Best game ever. No words can fully describe it.
Rating: Summary: Persistent universe, great expectations Review: --- The Game --- IMO, EVE is a universe simulation. You can pretty much do whatever you want - start a company, become an outlaw pirate, infiltrate your enemies, build an empire... With over 5,000 star systems to visit, it's a vast universe out there. --- The Character Creation --- You can pick from four different civilizations, all human. There are no real "aliens" in EVE, but rather the set of the story is way in the future of human colonization where a bunch of people got stuck behind a failed wormhole and have evolved in their own way for tens of thousands of years. You have five basic attributes - intelligence, memory, charisma, perception, will power - and as you can see they're all mental. There is no "strength" or "stamina", simply because those attributes are no longer important where it's all about controlling a space ship with your mind. After picking your stats you start choosing a career/school path to get your basic skills. --- Advancement --- Contrary to most "RPG" style games, EVE features no experience levels. What you have is your skills, your space ship(s), and money. Skills are trained by buying skill packs or upgrading a skill your already have, this training takes time iRL and it can be left "ticking" while you are off line. This is VERY good for the casual gamer, and the hardcore gamer can still get ahead of the competition by making more money than the competition by playing a lot. -- Graphics & Sound --- Just stunning. It's so beautiful you'll want to cry. Blasting past a planet or a twin-star ... wooh ... it's amazing. The music score is very original and ambient, most people love it and some hate it because it's too soft. The sounds when you enter combat could use a slight improvement, but that's about the only bad thing I have to say about this part. --- Any bad things about this game? --- As any MMORPG start-up we have seen a number of bugs from launch, ranging from mild annoyance to crashes. However the development team releases new patches every 7-14 days or so, fixing bugs and adding content at a relatively rapid pace (compared to other MMORPGs). --- Summary --- EVE is a unique concept in the Online Gaming world, and for that I recommend everybody to try it out. To maximize your fun I would also recommend a visit to the official website, read the Peak Of The Week stories and sign up for a corporation ("guild" in fantasy RPGs). Teamwork and background info makes the game so much more enjoyable. As the story is added to and more content is added every month this game is just blowing me away... TRY IT!
Rating: Summary: in response to above Review: In response to the reviews above, I can only say, that if you had taken the time to realise that there is MUCH MUCH more to the game than simply mining ore all day then you would realise that this game is actually one of the best MMORPG's out there. There is manufacturing/mining/Trade Running/Pirate Hunting/Bounty hunting, and many other ways of making money in the EVE Universe. Of course for a start mining is the easiest way to make money but its not the most lucrative, thus this encourages you to take things one step further and venture into the market of selling your own goods, this is turn creates more money with which you can perhaps buy Blueprints to make better ships and you may then want to think about pirate hunting now that you can stand up for yourself with better equipment etc. Basically what I'm trying to say is have some perciveriance with the game, don't try it for 10 minutes and decide you dont like it, give it time to open up and you will realise what a fun game it is. I really pity those people who give up after 10-15 minutes because they are missing SO MUCH.
Rating: Summary: Post Beta Review: I'm playing the trial now and I'm loving it so far. Here is my impression of the game so far: Graphics: They're great, reminds me a lot of Babylon 5. Sound: Not bad can get repetitive after awhile, but there is a way to get your own music played in game; I just haven't gone through the trouble of doing it yet. Game mechanics: The one thing that stands out is how you gain skills. As Davenyc stated the skill gains are real time based and so far I love it being so. You just have to train the long ones while you go offline. Meaning you can do anything and your character won't suffer anymore or any less than any others and it can kind of even out the field between the power gamers and the casual gamers. Money isn't that hard to come by you can either go straight out mining which does take long and can become somewhat boring or you can take the NPC starter mission which are a mix of courier, kill task and trade routes. After that you should have enough money to buy a new ship, better weapons and hunt down some NPC space pirates, trade or mine. Travel is point and click, I'm not a big fan of point and click but it just feels right in this game. Another feature it has is you can plot your course (You can let the computer choose the safest fastest or set your own waypoints) and then set auto pilot for those long trips. PvP is broken down into security areas and ratings. In high security areas if you attack a Player with a good or neutral rating you get a bad security rating and if you are in range of NPC guns or sentries will open fire on you. Low security areas are anything go's. It can also be based on what guild (in game there called corporations) you are in. The battles so far aren't anything spectacular although I expect it to change when I get higher up in the training ladder. The part I like most about this game is it has way more character progression than DAOC which has only a set number of lines you can train in a fewer spec that are considered viable. As far as I can see there are no buffbots running around (although I have seen some players running other accounts) It is also kind of awe inspiring the first time you open the map and just see how big the game world is. Crafting: Haven't delved into crafting yet but you can set up your own factories and research centers in the stations. From what I gather so far if you have the skills and the blueprint you can make it. Well thats what I got so far. Edit: If you played the beta they should have sent you a 14 day free trial. Definetly worth the downlaod, although it may be a pain if you don't have a braod band connection.
Rating: Summary: Eve Online Review: I just learned about this game a few weeks ago and have become totally addicted to it even though it is not out yet. The Eve universe will be huge, at launch it should have somewhere between 3,000 - 5,000 system for the user to explore, although this is subject to change. Each system is also incredibly large. The graphics for this game are also top notch and are incredible. Just with this, the game will prove to be very immersive. You will be given a ship when you start out and from there it's up to you to choose which path you would like to take. (ie. Trader, smuggler, miner, bounty hunter, pirate, etc..). One of the great aspects of this game is the ability to join corporations and also form your own corporation (you can build starbases for your corp). These corporation also have the ability to go to war against each other. Just think of having 100+ ships all fighting at each other in a system (the fighting might not necessarily take in one system though). There will also be a lot of NPC corporation you can join and do missions for them and move up the ladder in that corporation. You will be able to upgrade your ship, get items for it, miscellaneous items such as blueprints for a weapon (which you could sell for a high price), and also learn skills for your character (will also be able to enhance your character with implants). The features listed here is only a fraction of what this game will provide. As with all MMORPG there will be a small monthly fee for it. However, this is one game I won't mind paying a monthly fee for. I give this game 5 stars as this is the most anticipated MMORPG that will be coming out and of course I already think it's incredible by just reading about it. (For more information on this game, I would suggest searching for the official website for it. I would post the url in the review, but it would be edited out anyway. :P)
