Summary: The best graphic adventure. Ever.
Review: Grim Fandango is something unlike previous LucasArts games. In its creation, LucasArts dropped many of their graphic adventure standbys ("Look At", "Talk To", etc. menus) and threw themselves wholeheartedly into a 3D adventure with a brand new, simple interface. The result is the perfect blend of graphics, music, story, and puzzles.

Meet Manuel "Manny" Calavera, travel agent for the Department of Death, trying to work off his time in the Land of the Dead by selling travel packages to the newly deceased. When Mercedes "Meche" Colomar walks through his door his life (er, death...) takes a turn for the bizarre and he is flung head-first into a web of fraud, murder, and corruption.

What follows is a 4 year journey across the Land of the Dead in search of Meche and an answer to Manny's questions. Along the way you will help Manny assist Salvador Limones' revolution, run the Calavera Cafe (pulled directly from Casablanca), captain the S.S. Lola, and take a swim at the edge of the world. Not to mention interacting with the quirkiest characters ever to grace a game, solving terrific puzzles, and navigating beautifully rendered environments.

Grim Fandango is one of the best games I have ever played and the definitive graphic adventure. There will never be another to rival the sheer fun LucasArts has packed into this game. Manny Calavera and friends deserve a place on the hard drive of every computer.

And it's a super deal to boot.

Summary: Top-notch adventure game
Review: Grim Fandango is one of those games that you look forward to playing everyday after school or work. It's not only fun, but it is a technical masterpiece as well. The graphics and the audio are equally high-quality. The interface is very innovative, and very easy to learn. Manny (the main character) always turns his head towards something when you can interact with it. Then you simply press a button and he can describe it, use it, pick it up, talk with it, etc. It's a great system, one that feels very natural and makes the flow of the game very smooth.

The story behind the game is based on Mexican folklore - in the early stages of the game, el Dia del Muerto is the central theme. The characters are all very colorful, especially Manny Calavera the protagonist and his ursine driver, Glottis. Clever humor is interwoven throughout the storyline and the dialogue, promising hours of hearty laughs.

Not everyone will like this game, though. Adventure games don't have the quasi-universal appeal they used to, and for this reason many gamers may actually find Grim Fandango "boring". I, for one, found it to be an extremely entertaining game. You can even play with other people, although it's not a two player game - the story plays out so much like a movie that, even if you're not controlling Manny, you can enjoy what's going on on the screen.

Grim Fandango is an adventure game. If you liked the Monkey Island series or any other LucasArts adventure games, or games like King's Quest or Space Quest (remember that one?), you will love this game. I sure did.

Summary: I wished it wouldn't end
Review: We just finished Grim Fandango last night and I wished we hadn't. I will miss Manny, Meche and especially, Glottis. I love Glottis. I wish that Lucas Arts hadn't dropped this series, but had continued it and marketed it. I would love a soft, plushie Glottis stuffed toy. He is the finest "Spirit of the Land" I've ever had the pleasure to meet. The story is involving, the puzzles are challenging, and the atmosphere is absorbing. On the down side, we did have problems with the game crashing. We saved often and late in the game discovered a choice box under "Options," "3-D graphics" that may fix this problem. I encourage you to get this game while you can.

You gotta admitt that lucas art is [the best]! This game seems really boring in the beginning but....DUDE.... It gets fuuunnnn. You start off in a office move on to a military camp (secret one)...move on to a hotel which you evetually get. Later you need to go on a boat back to the beginning and more you will need to learn yourselves.(...)

Summary: A gem. Purchase it while you can.
Review: At the risk of rolling some eyes, I'm stating for the record that Grim Fandango should be in every entertainment collection, videogame or not. If you find it for sale, please do yourself a favor and spend the few dollars it takes to own this fine game.

Grim Fandango is not at all fast-paced compared to games in action or sports genres, but it is impossible to get bored while playing this game: the characters are fantastic (the first cutscene involving Meche--where she and Manny meet--is impressively gentle and touching in its brevity, two genuine feelings generated so naturally in Grim Fandango and unmatched in any other game I have played); the humour is unparalleled in videogame-dom ("What a relief. I was beginning to worry that our car wasn't ostentatious enough."); the world is absolutely fascinating and inexplicably natural in its surrealism; and Manny actually turns out to be one heck of a hero.

The puzzles are completely organic to the situations in the game, with a couple minor exceptions. However, upon a second play-through even the trickier puzzles usually become much easier to comprehend within the context of the game.

This game is a marvel. I suspect that every player will remember Grim Fandango warmly.

Summary: Still wonderful after all these years.
Review: While this game is older than some of my children, it's still a truly wonderful, and under appreciated gaming experience. By chance I stumbled upon Grim Fandango during an Amazon.com Friday sale a year ago, and have spent numerous hours solving the puzzles and enjoying the story as it unfolds.

At its current price, this is the best value anyone can get in PC gaming.

Summary: One of the most original games of all time
Review: You are Manny Calavera, a sales agent in the land of the dead. Your job is to get new arrivals to the land of the dead to final resting place, the ninth underworld, so you can work off your dept and you too can join the four-year journey to the final resting place. But all is not sweet in the land of the dead. There is an evil man afoot and is cheating souls out of their safe journey to the ninth underworld.

Simply put, one of the best games of all time. Everything about this game is brilliant. The lush graphics, the voice acting, the original plot, the memorable characters, and the sweet sounding background music.

Even though the game was made in the 90's, the graphics still compete with the graphics of today's games. The world that Manny lives is full of variety and Aztec inspired environments. The background images are crystal clear and the characters themselves are spot on. The cut scenes are even up to par with fast animation and flawless actions.

One of the best things in this game is the voice acting. The various actors that play the characters bring them to life. Manny's voice is full of expression so the player can tell exactly how he is feeling at the time, either disappointed, angry, or humored. To add to the greatness of the acting, Manny's voice is touched with a slight hint of Spanish dialect, and phrases that keep him alive. All other characters' voices are great. To the French of Sal, to the goofiness of Glotis, the voice acting brings this game to life.

The voice acting is one of the best features of this game. The only feature that surpasses it is the original story line. The plot is so fresh and original. It has a keen sense of humor, just the right amount of twists and turns, and a dramatic, satisfying end. When a gamer finishes the game, they can feel a sense of pride and accomplishment but also feel sad for what Manny had gone through. It was one of the best plots of any genre of all time.

The final great feature in this game is the music. It is full of swinging jazz, bebop, and instrumental solos. The original score sets the tone for the entire game and fits the mood perfectly. The lay back muted trombone solo seemed like just the right thing for the dark harbor of Rupecava.

Overall, a brilliant game that is with out a doubt worth owning. The only thing a gamer might have to do is download a free patch from Lucas Arts. Because the game was made in the 90's, parts of it don't work with high-speed computers.
