Summary: Highly Anticipated, Highly dissapointing
Review: I was a big fan of Heroes 2 & 3, and have played through both games, many multiplayer games (hotseat and lan), and thought they were both great games. Heroes 4 is quite different. First of all, with all the bugs in the game (3D0 was quick to release some patches), the games almost looked like it was in Beta when they shipped it out. Months later, multiplayer STILL isn't supported. The game feels extremely rushed, and some incredibly simple bugs (like being able to hit through castle walls) are still there. I'm a programmer myself and releasing a game in a state like this...... makes a person wonder. If you read about what kind of changes are being made each update, the game should've started at 0.5 than 1.0.

As for the gameplay, having heroes is interesting, but at the same time, if your hero dies, there goes your mission. On the same note, if your heroes get very powerful, you don't even need armies. Get yourself a two level 25+ barbarians and a couple potions of immortality and you have one of the tougher armies in the game. Why? Because unlike creatures, heroes don't lose units in battles (there's only one of them) and are basically the same strength throughout. And I abhor the new castle defenses. Being standing on top of these "posts" get a 4x multiplier for attack and defense. If you place 3 ranged units on those things, it'll take an army almost 3x as strong to break in.

So if you're a big HMM fan, my advice would be to WAIT. Wait till at least patch 1.4 comes out (which was supposed to happen in June). I think by then, it should be playable and more balanced.

Oh yes, and the only cinema i've encountered was the intro. Maybe they'll add those one too..

Summary: The War & Peace of Games. BEWARE!
Review: I am by no means a gaming expert, but I have had a mild addiction to Heroes 3 for a couple of years now. I was borderline "giddy" while driving home from the local came store with my new prize - Heroes 4.
6 weeks later, and I finally gave the thing away. It's not a bad or even mediocre game by far, but the problem for me is that I have a job. Meaning to say that any normal human with half a schedule cannot devote the time needed in order to get their hands around this goliath. It is so complicated and intensive and well, frankly too thorough. I'll stick to my old version. WHO NEEDS THE HEADACHE.
Bottom line - If you have your PhD in Gaming - this one's for you. If you're just a regular gal who likes to play a good, robust game a few times a week - get Heroes 3 - you'll love it.

Summary: Don't fear Changes!
Review: I've read some of the reviews and i find it very interesting that almost everyone wants the game to be like HOMM 3.

If this game series would everytime be the same with the same races and spells, same combat system and creatures it will end like the "Might and Magic" series which never changed. That's why it got worse and worse. Some changings would have been great to make the game more interesting.

HOMM 4 has changed and it is great! Now you have to change your strategies and your creature combinations completely.

Don't fear changes, they defend games of getting bored and old fashioned.

Summary: What Happened? If it ain't broke don't fix it . . .
Review: Whereas I have been enthralled by the series up to this point and was seriously excited about the new 3-D screen and other updates, I find myself sorely disappointed by the final product.

Gripes:

-New adventure screen is a bit hard to see as the objects are all a pastel and tend to blend in a little with the pastel backgrounds. Also the adventure screen seems cluttered and tight, and opening up to the highest resolution makes everything too small to see, so you need to stay on about 800 X 600.
-The combat engine is in need of a boot to the head! What used to be cool animations in 2D has turned into some lame unit drawings who lumber around the field and take swings at each other. The spell animations have also lost something in the translation, as they seem very cheesy and amateurish.
-The pace of the game seems to have gone way down. Either the maps are too big, or there isn't enough to do, but sad as it is, the game is a little BORING in comparison to prior versions (III especially, which was great.)

Go back to the drawing board and put back what was taken out for the principle of progress. Instead of the next generation, we got the retro-Atari interface version . . .

Too bad . . .

Summary: Where is multiplayer support!
Review: MULTIPLAYER IS STILL NOT AVAILABLE 3 Months after the release. They even included a nice note saying multiplayer would be available shortly in a patch. It has been 3 months.. 3D0 has lost this long time HOMM fan.

Where can I return this piece of patchware.

Summary: Some Basic Facts on This Game
Review: As a 1st time buyer in this series, this what I would have liked to have known before I bought:

- Overall Context: 6 races total, each with different creatures. Each town generates a specific race and the more it is built up, the more different kind of creatures it generates. The game then centers around capturing these towns with armies built of creatures and heroes

- Heroes: Heroes start as either a warrior or mage and add abilities of any kind through leveling. Choices available are somewhat random (you only have 3 choices each time you level) and this is a little frustrating. You can also increase abilities through shrines and purchase. The abilities you have somewhat determine the choices you get each time you level.

- Races: Some races are more compatible than other races and there is a certain skill involved in choosing which race to mix in your army, and which races to use against which races.

- Equipment: Only Heroes can use equipment or potions (potions are useless for the most part). Some strategy is involved in figuring out which ways to bolster your hero, either with equipment or various temporary attribute shrines, before battle.

- Retreating: If creatures retreat, they die. If Heroes retreat (before they are killed), they are teleported to a town and the dead Heroes are re-incarnated. This introduces the twist of having all (or mostly) Hero armies that can wear down an enemy before main army attacks.

Game Play: Armies and heroes move on the "adventure map" until they encounter enemies. Then game play switches to a "combat map" where there is a kind of turn based combat. On both the adventure and combat maps, each player takes a turn like in chess or other board games.

Computer/Player Option: You can play against the computer or choose to play both/all sides.

Summary: This isn't as bad as people make it.
Review: Most of what should be said has been said.
Like the previous HOMM's, the music is absolutely stunning.
Unlike the previous HOMM's the storyline is extremely well done and addictive.

All in all, a great single player game, but a horrible multiplayer experience.

Review: This game is not as good as the first three. They took away alot of the use of magic and your heroes no longer have any special skills any can't learn as many spells unless you are very high in level and by that time you should have already won.
The game so just buying creatures and fighting with them and the aritafacts are so so And so far a have not found a cursed one.
The game has change (ITS NOT THE SAME) some things are good about it but the first three games they made were better.
