Summary: My Advice: Stick with DFLW
Review: If you love laggy connectivity, game crashes, having to watch and wait for the start of another game when you die, downloading 19mb (!) patches just to get the game to run (which BTW, Sierra doesn't even bother hosting on their web site), then Half-Life Counterstrike is for you. Buggier than a picnic and, forget about trying to play it on a dial-up connection.

On the other hand, if you're looking for the best first person military style shooter out there, I highly recommend Delta Force Land Warrior. While DFLW's graphics may not be quite as crisp as HLCS, there is no comparison in all other departments.

Review: I dislike action games immensely, unless they are multiplayer. I also dislike Halflife and the Halflife engine aswell. I actually bought Halflife the day it came out, but was unable to finish it due to the amount of boredom it drove me to. The action games which involve strategy, such as Tribes2 or Rainbow Six, are the ones I love. So when I heard, a Rogue Spear type Mod was taking the online gaming community by storm, I was quite pleased. Learning it was based on the Halflife engine, I was skeptical. Upon installing the mod and running it first, I hated it. I found it a bit unrealistic, despite it's premise. However I kept going back to it, to get better, and better. Now I am the leader of my own clan 3 months later. My conclusion is, this game is incredibly addictive. First of all, don't buy the retail version of this game. Purchase Halflife for cheaper, and then download the Counter Strike mod. You can also download Team Fortress Classic, and other mods. Not only will you get more, but you will pay less. The tactical and strategic enjoyment of this game is incredible. Quite addictive and a lot of fun. Realistic weapons, this multiplayer game is actually more fun than Rogue Spear. The design of the weapons is quite good too. Unfortunately this game is really aging, as it's based on a 2 year old engine. I am afraid the community will start dimisihing, so you are better off getting this peice of gaming goodness quickly.

Summary: I must say, this is the best of the best
Review: This game is the best game I have ever played. Most First-Person Shooters get boring and dull after you have played them for a while, but this game will never get boring. I have been playing Counter-Strike ever sence you could download it(that was about a years ago before sierra desided to sell it), and over that past year it hasn't gotten boring yet. There is never a dull moment. With the wide veriety of weapons that you can get and the different levels there is always a change. Also there are new levels being made all the time.

There are only a few drawbacks. (1)The game gets choppy when someone throws a smoke grenade(but with my experience of this game I have found that not many people throw smoke grenades anyway, so dont worry about it) (2)This game is extremely fast pased and it will take a while to get used to. Most games last about 3-5 min. max but you respawn after each game so dont worry about having to wait for a while after each game. If you die during the game you don't respawn, but you go into a Free Look mode where you can watch the living battling it out. (3)This game will take away all of your time if your not careful. During the day the only thing I can think about is playing this game. It is extremely addictive and you wont stop playing. The fun never stops. (4)Some players or server administraitors can be mean or vulgor, but you will learn to ignore this. You cant take it personally. I am willing to bet that you will be mad when you die.

(5)It takes a while to get good at. But that is a good thing. unlike some games that can be mastered in 30 Min. this game may take months to get good at. But when you finnaly get good at it you will feel like you have conquered the world. When you are good then you can work on killing people with style.

I totally agree that this is the best game. All of the problems I have listed are dominated by the fun you will have playing this game. But just remember, if you buy this game don't get frustrated because you aren't good just keep working on it. Practice makes perfect!

Summary: Could be 4 1/2 stars, but has several problems
Review: Counter-strike is THE most popular action multiplayer game today. After playing it for awhile, you'll begin to see why it is. With literally tens of thousands of players each moment, there is an endless amount of public servers to play on. Even while playing on a 56k modem, it is not (that) hard to be good at this game. With three different scenarios, hostage rescue, defuse/plant bomb, and assassination, there's a flavor for each and every person's preference. The many different guns and equipment add to the fun as well. Whether you're dominating as a counter-terrorist with a m4a1 colt, tearing up the opposition as a terrorist with an AK-47, or mowing down enemies in one shot with the AWM sniper rifle, you get a rush each and every moment. Nothing's like entering the hallway in de_dust with your trusty mp5, having flashbangs, smoke grenades, and explosive grenades explode all around you as you and your teammates try to stop the terrorists trying to plant the bomb. Or having snipers tracing your every move as you try to rescue the hostages in cs_assault by entering through the vents. Incredible sound tracks every thundering of the awm being shot, or the small echos of footsteps above and around you. Counter-Strike is not by ANY means a deathmatching game. Just try going off by yourself, even armed with a m249 para machine gun fully armored against the other squad. You won't last 10 seconds without backup from your teammates. If you think that you will be able to do this, then you'll find yourself in ghost mode a lot. Teamplay is a major element in Counter-Strike, and makes the game a lot more fun.

However, there are several problems that can occur in your counter-strike playing experience.

1. Immature players - aka "llamas". Players who yell and scream and curse everytime you kill them. Players who feel like they can deathmatch their way through CS without teammates and dominate the server. Can be a big problem on servers.

2. Cheaters - cheaters are somewhat common on CS, whether it be very OBVIOUS cheating, such as moving about 100x faster than everyone else, or inconspicuous cheating, such as having automatic aimers, seeing through walls, or making the player models glow like radioactive blobs.

3. Lag - lag will hit all players on CS, whether they be on 56k or DSL, it all depends on the server you play on. So you want to find a server with pretty good latency or you will not be having fun seeing yourself surrounded with players moving like slide show.

Either way, Counter-Strike is very worth every dollar or minute you spend buying or downloading it. If you are a new player, just take your time and maybe spend some time reading some strategies on the forums on the counter-strike webpage. After awhile, you will get the hang of it and really start having fun.

Summary: This mod is definitely not worth buying
Review: I'm sure that you've read all of these reviews saying "Counter-strike is the best game ever!!!! BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!" and such, but fail to tell you of the many flaws that Counter-Strike has, so here are a few flaws to showcase for Valve or Sierra's attempt to milk more money out of a 1-2 year old product:

1. Net code and the engine: Think you're safe if you go behind a corner? Not on your lagged enemies screen you're not. While this does make the game a bit fair, what's bad is the fact that people can lag themselves to exploit this.

The lag compensation is flaky, as sometimes you'll have a sniper rifle and you'll be sitting absolutely still and your crosshairs will be on an enemies' head, and then you shoot and it misses.

The Half-life is extremely inefficent, meaning you'll get low framerates considering the small number of polygons on screen. This is more noticeable if someone starts bogging down the game with smoke grenades.

2. Visual flaws: Think you got a headshot because you saw the blood burst or the hit to the helmet? WRONG! Bullets in Counter-strike tend to hit in a different place then where you see them hit.

In the case of some guns, it appears as if you are reloading the same clip back into the gun. Considering they had months to fix this...

3. Gameplay flaws: The bounding boxes of the player models are distorted. This reduces the chances of you hitting someone's head if shoot at what you see is their head.

Some guns are so inaccurate that it'll make you think you bought a defective gun (something I call the broken barrel effect)...

Counter-strike features a money system in where it awards you for rescuing hostages, killing an opposing team member, for being on the winning/losing team, etc. and you use this money to buy bigger weapons and such. Often, this just allows the winning team to win even more instead of giving the losing team a chance or keeping it even...

There are 22 weapons in Counter-strike, however, some are near useless. The two semi-automatic sniper rifles are supposed to have an advantage in firing rate... however the recoil is so severe that you have to wait a second to fire again. Add to the fact that you have to be a sitting duck (literally) to use the guns due to the broken barrel effect, and well, you would probably be better off using the knife.

Some weapons are severely over-powered as well. The AI Arctic Warfare/Magnum kills in one shot to your small toe when many other weapons can only tickle you to death, enough said. The Desert Eagle, which is extremely cheap, can not only act as a sniper rifle in the hands of an expert, but can shoot accurate in the air, as well as kill in 3-4 bullets (even with armor) excluding headshots.

Pricing of weapons is horrible. The M249, the most expensive weapon in the game, has been toned down so severely that pistols are more effective than it is.

4. The players: While you can try to use strategy in this game... most of the time people won't listen to you and will block you so you can't escape the swarm of enemies with MP5s while you're sniping or flashbang you while you're rushing in to plant the bomb.

Some servers have friendly fire turned on, which means your teammates can accidently shoot you, which really isn't a bad thing. However the number of endless jerks that PURPOSELY kill you when you're on their team is.

In all fairness, this mod is definitely above average... however considering that you can download this for free and get Half-Life: Opposing Force, the Adrenaline Pack, or just plain Half-Life for very cheap (probably in the bargain bin by now), it's definitely not worth purchasing this.

Summary: Great game; immature players
Review: This game has all the priorities of a great 1st person shooter. All but the online part. Yes, playing with friends is awesome. But playing against people who handle the game with a big ego and no sportsmanship is nerve-racking and gets annoying after a while. Many servers ban the people; which is also an unfair deal. If you're causing commosion the server can kick you; however when an immature person is running the server; they could easily kick you simply because you killed them when their back was turned. Team killing is also a bad issue, as players who cant kill their opponents stick to killing their own team mates, leaving the game, and coming back in as a different name and proceeding to killing their allies. If this happens more than 3 times, its likely you are to be banned from the server. I was once banned from a server for saying "damn" which I feel is unfair because some stupid 10 year old was running it. Another thing I dislike is the spamming players do to annoy others. When binding a sentence into a key, they can press the bound key many times to send the message over and over; causing loads of spam; which is unfriendly to everyone in the server. Counter-Strike BOTS are available for free (of course) at many websites that you can download them from. Often, they play like real humans, without the annoying habits. Alone from all of the bad points of the game, the main thing that sets it above many other online games is that its a fast running 1st person shooter. Many 1st person shooter games tend to lag alot in their game, such as Quake, which hosts very laggy games. Quake 2 has a stubborn sense of multiplayer because you must enter in the server IP everytime you want to compete over the net. Possibly the best online game that went as far as Counter-Strike is StarCraft and Diablo. One more thing: as for the rating Amazon gave Counter-Strike, I agree with the blood and violence, but 'horror'? Oh please, never in the game do you actually feel scared. Scared of dying? You respawn after the match is over. Come on people, if you feel scared of playing actual humans over the net, you shouldnt be playing this at all. If you wanted horror you should have picked up something like Resident Evil or Parasite Eve.

Summary: My favorite Game of All Time
Review: The best gaming experience I have ever found. After months I can't get sick of it. It's very intense and very simple. It's also much more organized than death-match style games and it really motivates real team-work. I've stopped playing Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament since I started playing Counter-Strike many months ago.

Many players online are very good from experience. It will be very hard for new players, but with work you'll get the hang of it. It only gets better as you improve. I've seen players get good enough to hold their own just by playing 30 minutes a day for several weeks.

Many players out there are very immature, foul and offensive. You just have ignore them and play the game. There are plenty of mature players that make the experience all the more enjoyable.
